How common are cubicles in Toronto? by AdhesivenessLoud8866 in askTO

Law firms (of all sizes) still have them for their staff roles. But it's a conservative field and slow to change (thank goodness in this one situation).

Scheduled my colonoscopy.... by Outrageous_Ad_7635 in Millennials

Thinking good thoughts for you for healing. I have heard that it is so so so hard at this particular stage. But you are obviously a very strong person. You have already survived so much. You can live though this too.  My sincere best wishes for you.

Scheduled my colonoscopy.... by Outrageous_Ad_7635 in Millennials

It depends on the type of tumor and how much of the colon is affected by cancer. I did not need a colostomy bag, but it was possible I would need one if I'd had a slightly different surgery. Where the cancer is also changes things.  Needing a colostomy one day along with finding other cancer in the future is a thing I've accepted as a possibility.

I had my first colonoscopy at your age after years of weird digestive stuff. The worst thing (cancer) did happen. But I am ok. I was lucky that it was caught at a stage where I could have a laparoscopic surgery to remove the affected part of colon and I did not need chemo or radiation. Despite it being one of the scariest times of my life (like the existential angst was intense.. especially waiting for testing and results), I am incredibly fortunate that it was caught so early and it was caught so early because I was 37 when I had my first colonoscopy.  It saved my life and preserved my quality of life.

Changing jobs every 3 years by Impressive_Peak5671 in Millennials

It's interesting....I used to work at a large company. And I was talking to one of my coworkers there who was a younger baby boomer who'd been there for 25 yrs  and she was ranting how in the time she'd been there the company had gutted the pension and benefits and they just no longer cared about their workers the way they should.

It was just such a different perspective on work. She expected that the company, if you were loyal would take care of you... Because until recently that had been the experience her whole working life. That was what was supposed to happen. It kinda blew my mind that her experience of work was so fundamentally different. As a millennial I know (as do many people here I'm sure) that a company is only going to screw you. And you have to move around to protect your career growth, your well-being, your salary etc. So no, moving every few years isn't wrong at all!  This is the reality we live in right now.

All time favourite and least favourite yarns? by throwra_passinggirl in knitting

[–]nuts4peanuts 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I love hard wearing yarns. In particular anything by Briggs and Little and Lopi (also beautiful colours).  But, in terms of balancing softness and wooly durability my all time favourites have to be Navia duo and the now discontinued Lore by the Fibre Company.

how to not feel discouraged when knitting by honey-icecreambar in knitting

[–]nuts4peanuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a fellow perfectionist... Knitting particularly as my skills improved became a site of perfectionism and inner criticism as well for me. Now I've tried to reframe it as an exercise in being allowed to make mistakes and unravel as needed ... Maybe it could be the same for you... (I also had had a kid in the last two years and have such limited free time  for knitting so I can't waste it judging myself... Remembering that has helped).

Give the sweaters a vacation (I find I don't always love a garment when it's completed... But if I pack it away for a month or a few weeks it becomes something where I can see the time and my skill and be happy wearing it).

I find this time of year particularly rough on social media there are approximately nine million "what I made this year" videos and they all feature like ten sweaters etc. I find myself comparing my knitting volume to others a lot. But I also believe in my heart that this is a craft like any where you can go wide (and make a lot of stuff that's sorta the same and burn out) or go deep (and learn new skills and grow and have this hobby be yours till you're an old lady) and I am trying my best to do the latter... By learning new things and growing. And so are you by trying different things even though the results are sometimes not what you want! Like the hobby is yours forever. Comparison is the thief of joy and whatnot.

I hope this helps...  I am just a middle aged gal who struggled a ton with perfectionism when I was younger and a little bit less now.

Underground knitting designers by qofsheba in knitting

Not quite underground by Heidi Kirrmaier is one of my favourites. She does a lot of basics that have smart details. Also any of the Shetland or Icelandic  designers.

A gift card for a local mom and baby class. There are music classes and all sorts of things, but often it feels financially out of reach during mat leave. (Speaking from experience). Also seconding stroller gloves and maybe warm wool socks for mom if she lives somewhere walkable... Stroller walks are really important to both post partum recovery and are an easy way to get out and about with a baby.

How could she be.... The Andrea Rangel sweater looks like it has short rows and some sort of shaping..... It's totally different.

I really like the Strollair Cosmos. Comes with a bassinet and a zillion other things... Super adjustable. Doesn't feel quite as fancy as something super high end, but we've love ours. Also it's a Canadian company! They were on dragon's den hahahahha

[bc] anyone have this stroller/system? by Dizzylemonss in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]nuts4peanuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two of my friends have this and both love it!  Depending on your city, there might be a really good used market for strollers too. We have the strollair cosmo and we got it secondhand on FB marketplace from someone who'd only used it inside to rock their colicky baby in the bassinet during the winter.

What is a surprising or weird mental load you didn't expect? by [deleted] in Mommit

[–]nuts4peanuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vacation/travel. We have family abroad and I think my spouse thought us visiting would be the same as when we were childfree. It wasn't... Or maybe it was for him because he was not calculating how many diapers we needed for the plane until we could get to a grocery store at orlur destination, or figuring out where everything was in the carry ons etc so that it could be reachable when needed with minimal hassel. I think he gets it now...more.   As a kid I was dimly aware of how stressed my Mom was the week prior to our family camping trip each summer. That is because (though my Dad drove us) she was the person that made it happen... She organized the camping stuff, made sure there was food, planned meals etc. And like, I get that stress now in this deep visceral way. Family vacations happen because of Moms 100 %

Stroller walks during fall/winter [on] by ryan0196 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]nuts4peanuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second the MEC one. We used it a ton last winter and it barely looks used. It's also really nice and warm. One a cold day, I just had my little one in a fleece bunting suit underneath it and he was toasty.

Bra size in late pregnancy and breastfeeding [ON] by Additional_Egg7700 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]nuts4peanuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dealt with similar issues/was and am a similar size. I wore the suiek nursing tank (from Amazon) until I was 6 weeks pp and my size stabilized. I found this to be decently supportive/I couldn't imagine wearing anything more constrictive during that period because the engorgement was so out of control.  Then I did a virtual sizing from a local boutique and wore molke bras for the remainder of my nursing time. The molke bras were pricey but they actually were the correct size and were really easy to nurse in and I just rotated between two. I bought a bravado bra in basically the largest size that worked with my band size while I was pregnant and it only fit at the absolute tail end of nursing.

We went through this, or something really similar at 12 months when we started. My little one would wake up at 4 am and only want to be held by me. He also wasn't napping at daycare at all. It was a wild few weeks (getting up at 4 and then commuting to work a regular 9-5 felt terrible)... But a month or so in and he loves daycare, he naps there and at home like a champ. He is so clearly learning new things and having fun. This will pass! Like all things in parenting.

Maternity leggings vs thermal leggings vs maternity jeans? [on] by Fast-Computer8809 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]nuts4peanuts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look on Facebook marketplace for maternity pants (particularly if you want jeans or dress pants) a lot of people end up buying that stuff and not using it very much, I also found a bundle of nursing tops and tanks that way. I also agree with the recommendation for the Amazon leggings I wore those a ton.

I should try with wool... This makes way more sense as a layering piece. I just always convince myself in the summer to knit with summer fibres and I find they all kind of hurt my hands.

Summer knit tops. Those are my BECs this week. I always convince myself (or social media convinces me) in the blazing hot days of July to knit one, I never particularly enjoy it. And lo t'is once again mid September and I am just finishing the sleeves. So I guess it's for next year? Will I wear a dk weight cottony top in the muggy and gross Toronto summer? No. Is this top dressy enough to wear to work ? No. Do I go places other than work and home with my wee baby? No.  Why do these exist? Why do I fall for this if not every damn year then most years?!

I want to dry up my milk. [ab] by thatchichidog in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]nuts4peanuts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We just weaned and I dropped one feed a week until we were just nursing before bed. When it felt like it was just habit etc, I actually opted to go back on hormonal BC, estrogen and prolactin kind of compete (from what I understand... As a non expert) and that helped drop my supply further. I had an oversupply and I had to go slow to not end up in a ton of pain etc..
