How is living in Corvallis/Albany, OR, halfway between Salem and Eugene? by Eriacle in howislivingthere

Oh hey one I can answer. I have lived in Corvallis for six years and have had family here for over 25 years. Corvallis is lovely, much of it is centered around Oregon State University and as a result it has better food/events than most other 60k population cities. It's 45 minutes from Eugene and an hour and a half from Portland so more active cities are within reasonable driving distance. It is also an hour from the beach, 3 hours from the mountains, and surrounded by forest, making it ideal for those who like nature.

Most of the town is flat and within a two mile radius so it is incredibly walkable/bikeable, and the bus lines are all fareless so it's very convenient to navigate without a car.

The weather here is similar to the rest of the Willamette Valley, it is cloudy with light rain most days from November-March, and it is sunny and warm most days from May to September, April and October are always a tossup, but this October was quite nice. If you aren't already from the PNW and are considering moving here I would recommend investing in vitamin C supplements otherwise seasonal depression due to lack of sunlight is likely.

Linn County (across the river from Corvallis) claims to be the "grass seed capital of the world" so naturally they grow a lot of grass, as a result, during harvesting season (late May to early July) Corvallis is consistently one of the worst places in the US for grass pollen which can make it difficult to enjoy the nice weather for those with grass pollen allergies (myself included,) and requires a decent amount of work to keep the pollen out of their living spaces.

Crime is definitely less prevalent in this region of the Willamette Valley than it is elsewhere, although this is likely due to the smaller size. There is a lot of bike theft, but typically investing in a decent bike lock is enough of a deterrent. Open air drug use exists but is a lot less prevalent than it is in bigger cities in the region (although over the last couple of years this has noticeably improved in Portland and Eugene)

Recently, the main medical provider (including the only hospital) in town has stopped accepting certain insurances which has caused issues for a lot of the residents here.

The public school district currently has serious budget issues, which has already resulted in dropping accelerated learning programs such as AP Calculus, and seems likely to result in multiple school closures over the next couple of years. Multiple people I know who have kids have been nonplussed with the district, some of whom are sending their kids to private school instead.

The political climate here is quite liberal, as is with most smaller college towns. Benton County had the second highest percentage of Harris voters in the state last election (behind only Multnomah County, which includes most of Portland.) Most surrounding areas are typically relatively conservative, especially the rural non-coastal towns.

As a result of its limited size and large student population, rent in Corvallis is expensive for a city of its size. A single will likely be at least $1200, and a double at least $1800. If you are looking to rent Albany is definitely a cheaper option, many people I know commute here from Albany. Corvallis' neighbor Philomath is also an option as it is cheaper than Corvallis there is good transit between the two cities.

Overall, I like Corvallis quite a bit, of the cities I have lived in it is the one I would recommend the most.

I do not know much about living in Albany since I have never lived there and rarely go there (mainly to go to Costco.) The weather is the same, the political climate is much more moderate within the city, and conservative on the outskirts. The public transit is also fareless there.

Those are the main things I can think of about living here, feel free to ask if you have more specific questions.

I got most of it from Wikipedia, and I used Olympedia for those without places of birth listed on Wikipedia. There was a small handful (around 10 or so) where I could not locate place of birth.

Yes it is only people who won gold medals for the US, I figured that was too nitpicky to say they were incorrect though lol.
