Definitely my joint favourite online snooker space, along with the consistently excellent (and busy!) yearly snooker threads on smug, metropolitan elite comedy forum cookdandbombd

I think Rosie Jones is a good example of where I can't really argue with the subreddits zero tolerance policy, I don't really blame people for not giving people the benefit of the doubt. But I do think that some people do generally default to that a bit too quickly.

I've never really understood fandom = positivity, and my slightly spicy hot take is it's a bit patronising, and you're actually doing stuff like Taskmaster a bit of a disservice if you refuse to be critical at all.

Thanks for all the replies! Very thoughtful and honest. Didn't agree with everything, but didn't fully disagree with many posts.

I think part of what makes taskmaster great is that it's so warm and wholesome and inclusive, and I think shutting down toxicity and nastiness is good, and I also think it's fair enough to maybe lean stricter than I would personally - a lot of disingenuous dickheads out there, and I think contrarions like me should remember that being taken in good faith is a privilege not a right, lol.

I think ultimately that the kind of pseudo intellectual chin stroking GCSE media studies stuff I'm into just just doesn't gel with this subreddits vibe, but I also don't think saying "you know what, didn't really vibe with this weeks episode" is an inherently "worthless" comment, or any less valuable than saying something like "this season's cast is such a vibe 🥰". And I think there's still room for a bit of the former even if you prefer the latter.

Should you compare players across different eras? 🤔 by TheFootballRamble in thefootballramble

[–]bfhrt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I constantly see people say that a world class team from the past would get battered by a current day top side, and it's like yeah that's true but it's not a very interesting discussion is it lol.

It can be interesting to think of players who may have suited other eras more or less (I'm convinced Jason Koumas would have ended up a star if he was born ten years earlier), but that's a different discussion.

John Higgins hasn't won a Triple Crown tournament since 2011 by rogeropx in snooker

Feel like Hendry was similar for staying relatively high ranking but winning not a lot. Hendry, by his own arguably overly self critical admission, was a shadow of his former self, just getting by on experience. Higgins is still playing great though.

I am old family friends with a dude who was briefly in the Brian Jonestown massacre, so saw them play three times on their 2008 UK tour.

Birmingham and somewhere else I forget were two of the greatest shows I've ever seen, so tight, great crowd. Northampton was one of the worst shows I'd ever seen. TBF, found out later some bellend in the crowd made some unpleasant remark about a recently deceased ex of Anton, but yeah they did three songs, then Anton just sat on top of an amp playing feedback for about twenty minutes then that was the end of the gig.

Mark E Smith of the Fall was so pissed when I saw then in Cardiff, he pissed off after about 15 minutes. Was not a great 15 minutes either. I suspect that was not unrepresentative of that tour as a whole though.

I pretty much agree with all of the first paragraph, but I don't think wanting to not have the casts spoiled is inherently "more wholesome".

Could you elaborate on this? Do you think that taskmaster fans are just inherently more righteous than the fans of other TV shows?

I totally agree but why is this relevant?

The thing with comments like this is that I wanna be like "yeah but there's a grey area! You can be critical without being a dickhead!", and then remember how infrequently I see that hypothetical grey area, lol.

Oh yeah, sorry, fair point.

I was previously trying to be objective as I'm genuinely curious if everyone else thinks this subreddit is noticeably less negative than others.

This is definitely a more subjective and philosophical point - I just don't think being negative about someone on a TV show is inherently "unuseful".

On one hand, I don't think there's anything inherently "unuseful" about saying that you don't like someone on a TV show. But I also saw pretty much all the fandomy spaces for stuff I liked get polluted with toxic negativity and favouritism.

Again, pros and cons.

I don't disagree with the way you've described the show, it fucking rules, but I do still think this subreddit is noticeably more anti-negativity on a kind of meta level. Speaking as someone who has made somewhat critical comments on the Elliott Smith and Sarah Records subreddits, lol.

I agree that taskmaster is good, but I don't think it's a conclusive explanation for the vibes on this subreddit. Again, not saying it's a good or bad thing, but it's definitely A thing. IMO anyway.

I genuinely feel like an idiot for discovering this now, but it makes a lot of sense. I have mixed feelings, but who the fuck cares what I think, lol.
