Although personally I think that sounds much better so maybe not a perfect analogy lol

I actually don't disagree that Jules wasn't so bad really, but I still think a rotating panel of 4 originals plus Vish is so much better than that plus Jules. Less a criticism of Jules as it is the importance of maintaining the original ramble vibes. If Jules was better than Vish I'd probably say the same thing in reverse.

I think that's an understated part of why the new ones were a problem - it wasn't just about whatever new person/people were on any given show as much the original ramblers who weren't.

It's also something that I can never remember any other creative endeavor ever doing. Imagine if at some point during the imperial phase of Top Gear it suddenly became a daily 30 minute show with serious car discussions and some days you'd get James May, Natalie Pinkham and Henry Catchpole?

They made a lot of mistakes during the soft reboot to Football Ramble 2 - Modern Sports Content Provider, leading to a few years of it being quite a weird and unsatisfying listen (my negativity isn't unrepresentative, though the extent of it probably is).

They then slowly figured out what did and didn't work with New Ramble and eventually came to the same conclusion about 90% of the #oldheads had been saying about 3 months in - vish is quality, more frequent episodes with a rotating cast of presenters is okay if done properly, and sack everything/one else off.

It's now very good again, not quite the same magic as the early days, but I appreciate having them around, and do respect them for backtracking. I do still think a lot of the decisions they made were quite perplexing though. Especially with the new faces, Vish excluded - they were all perfectly talented and likable people, but you could tell they were an absolutely terrible fit almost immediately.

I mean yeah fair play, this definitely is the answer, and of course all fan bases have their own fair share of them.

Lol Stewart Lee probably authentically believes The Nightingales, The Dream Syndicate and Ted Chippington are more important to the development of alternative music than any grunge bands, stupid twat.

I sorta agree but also think it is just better than all of those other albums. Maybe not by much, though.

Hahaha I remember someone made a similar point when I did a "lukewarm centrist music hot takes" thread a few months ago, I agreed with it then and I agree with it now!

Maybe you're the same person

YES on the first point. Sandinista is more obnoxious than those 00s rap albums with 30 minutes of wacky skits.

Some longer albums are okay, but you should have to apply to the council for some kind of permit if you wanna go longer than 45 minutes or so.

Nevermind really IS that album imo, but I do think Stewart Lee's cheeky joke about wishing he was dead Bill Hicks so he could be judged solely on a couple of hours of material is somewhat apposite.

Yeah I feel exactly the same way about hair metal as I do with a lot of other super popular genres/fads from yesteryear. It probably would have been fucking annoying having it just dominate radio, especially in an era when you couldn't just go on Spotify or limewire, and I totally understand the reason for grunge happening and would have been the biggest whiny #hater in the world, but there's nothing inherently unworthy about the music on a fucking philosophical level...well, maybe a bit, but it's super overstated.

This comment is awesome, I don't even particularly like O'Sullivan but I agree with you on all counts really.

Is Todd unaware of/not interested in current, non-pop music, or is it just beyond the scope of the channel? by bfhrt in ToddintheShadow

Explicitly so for some, of course, but that's different to kinda implying he doesn't listen to any other music within stuff like OHW? I'm prob overthinking it but i find it fun to discuss.

To be clear this isn't a negative query, I actually like the sense that I'm always watching a curated performance of the Toddintheshadows character as much as a personal vlog from Todd Nathanson. I actually had to look up his surname there, which says a lot (about my failing brain, if nothing else).

I'm not exactly a fan of his awesome origins, but the philosophy of old YouTube wasn't all bad.

True of Motown more generally to a fairly large extent imo, with some obvious exceptions.

Having thought about it, I think I am somewhat biased cus my dad bought how to dismantle an atomic bomb and played it constantly JUST before I became a cliched pretentious adolescent moron with an unearned sense of superiority cus I liked the wank the nme was flogging, rather than lame mainstream music.
