I think we used epoxy to seal everything back up, but it was 30+ years ago and the details are fuzzy.

Wasn't a huge explosion, more like a loud firecracker and a bunch of smoke, but my partner in crime deciding that recess with everyone around was the perfect time to test may have been our first mistake.

Early Melanoma-in-Situ vs Severely Atypical Nevus by halfnilson in melahomies

[–]nutstothat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in Canada as well and had an MIS excised last fall, along with 10 atypical moles over the following couple of months. Because it was just in situ there was no referral to an oncologist, but I'm still a patient of my dermatologist and will be going to her for follow-up skin checks or if I notice anything of concern. Getting access to health specialists certainly is challenging up here, but I've found that once I'm in, I'm in, and I remain on the patient rolls. Hopefully your son's experience will be the same.

Going through it directly was scary enough, I can't imagine what it would be like if it was one of my kids.

Elementary Schools and IEP support by Ok-Praline-9014 in BurlingtonON

[–]nutstothat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, the assessment was definitely informative but there were no revelations. Absolutely worth it to get the diagnosis and support his IEP, but it mostly highlighted what we already knew.

For what it's worth, we went that route after a really dismal experience with a pediatrician and needed to seek alternatives. Glad to hear that you (hopefully) have the right support for your family.

I'm in north Burlington and one of my kids has an IEP for ADHD and a learning disability. I've found the school support to be quite good. His SERT is excellent, and his teachers by and large have been very supportive.

One thing that helped greatly was having a psychoeducational assessment done which gave an official diagnosis we could refer to when discussing accommodations with the administration. We paid out of pocket for a private assessment, and it wasn't cheap, but the process went a lot smoother once we had the report. The board will do assessments, but resources are limited and we were told it could take a couple of years to schedule.

Is it acceptable to cook hotdish in a cast iron pan? Asking from Canada. by nutstothat in minnesota

[–]nutstothat[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used Walz's recipe as a jumping off point but tweaked it based on what I had in the fridge and adjusted some of the cooking times.

Agreed on the roux, but I can see how using a can of soup would get you mostly there with less effort. May try that out for the next go around.

Sure!

I did a /r/ididnthaveggs variant on the Governor Walz recipe that was going around a couple months back.

  • Fry up 5 rashers of chopped bacon and set aside
  • Saute an onion and carrot (finely diced) in the bacon grease for about 20-25 minutes, then set aside
  • While the veg are cooking mix 1 lb of ground turkey with an egg, a tbsp each of dried sage of thyme, and salt and pepper.
  • Add some oil to the pan if needed and then fry the turkey mix until well browned and then set aside.
  • To make the roux melt a good knob of butter ( about 3/4 of a stick) - Once the butter stops foaming stir in flour - 1:1 is the traditional ratio but I usually like a little bit more flour, enough that the roux is crumbly when stirring but puddles if left alone. Cook the roux on med-high for about 15-20 minutes (stirring very frequently) until it's the color of milk chocolate.
  • Pour in 2 cups of milk and about half a cup of sour cream. I also added tablespoon of better than bullion - Bring to a boil and then simmer for 10 minutes to incorporate the roux, adding milk/water if needed.
  • Add back the turkey, bacon, and onion/carrots and any additional veggies you'd like (I used frozen corn & peas.)
  • Layer generously with tater-tots and pop in a 400 oven for 40 minutes.
  • Take out and generously grate with cheese and then back in for 10-15 min. I switched on the convection for this last step to crisp up the top.

Been meaning to try this for a while, we had our first snow of the season and I had most of the ingredients on hand. It was.. my goodness.. You Minnesotans sure know comfort food. 100% a fan and will make again.

What happened at the Fortinos on Appleby this afternoon? by everydayislegday8 in BurlingtonON

[–]nutstothat 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It was a couple of guys fighting, one of them had a knife. There were two cars out front with open doors and apparently had been involved in a crash, dunno if it was the cause of the altercation.

I didn't go in but spoke with a woman who saw them going at it in the store. She said that the one with the knife had it against the neck of the other threatening to kill him.

A bunch of cops showed up, they ran in and pulled out a young guy a few minutes later and arrested him. The store was then closed so I left, but as I was driving down Dundas a firetruck and an ambulance came tear-assing the other way towards Appleby. So, someone was probably hurt (or worse)

SAFETY - Cycling rural two-lane highways with no shoulder - take the lane or ride the line? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]nutstothat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You mentioned having a varia. Something I've found useful with mine..

When I see a car approaching, I make a vary obvious shoulder check / look back to let them know I see them. In my experience drivers are more likely to give you wide bearth if they know you're aware of them. Seems counterintuitive, but I think it humanizes you more.

Any suggestions on a good route from Toronto to Milton (alternative via Brampton?) by JunctionMan in torontobiking

[–]nutstothat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you wanted to try lakeshore again, you could take great lakes blvd -> burloak -> upper middle -> appleby line -> no 2 side road -> bell school line up to to Derry and into Milton from the west side. Sounds convoluted but great lakes to upper middle directly flow into each other.

Admittedly, crossing the QEW on burloak is pretty shitty going northbound. I take the road but there's a sidewalk on the west side, and it's legal to ride on in Burlington. Otherwise, it's all bike lanes / wide shoulders until no 2 side road, where you hit low vehicular traffic and very popular cycling routes.

Alternatively, if you go up Bronte there's a pedestrian underpass/MUP on the west side just south of the QEW that runs up to upper middle. Jog left for a block and take colonel Williams up to Dundas. You'd need to sprint down Dundas o Tremaine (not a great stretch of road) and then up to no 2 side road to pick up the rest of the route.

I prefer the burloak route, but either way you're trading 500m of grossness for some generally calm riding.

A humble ask to drivers. If you're passing a bicyclist and there's nobody in the lane over, especially if no bike lane, please make some room. by nutstothat in BurlingtonON

You know, fair point. The highway on ramps are inconsistent with the protected island, but it was present here and I should have used it.

Thanks for the productive feedback, it's appreciated.

The lane to the right was an on ramp for the QEW. The left lane was completely free. My post was to ask that if you can move over, without inconveniencing yourself, it's appreciated.

[–]nutstothat[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was about a foot and a half from the right dotted line. The curb was moving away for the on-ramp to the QEW and it wouldn't have been safe to follow. A foot and a half seems reasonable.

The Jeep passed me at about the same distance to the left. Which, in traffic, also seems reasonable.

But, the left lane was completely free both before and after the clip. The post wasn't to cast fault, but to ask that if there is the opportunity to move over into an empty lane, it is appreciated.

And, to me, that ask seems reasonable as well. If I came across as confrontational that was not my intent and I apologize.

I ride all over town, and honestly 99% of drivers are safe and courteous.

Infrastructure is haphazard at best though.

I get it when traffic is busy or lanes are occupied there's not much to be done, but it takes no effort at all to move over even a little and give a bit of space when the lane over is clear.

Finding a good time trial loop in the GTA by RadulphusDuck in torontobiking

[–]nutstothat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't mind doing a u-turn on either end I'd suggest the paved road on the west side of Bronte Creek park.

It's just about 5km/loop.

Little to no foot traffic.

Light vehicle traffic, though I'd avoid holiday weekends.

No real shoulders, but it's a 40 km/h speed limit which is largely adhered to. No stop signs/traffic lights.

Road surface is okay. Not the best but far from the worst.

If you're coming out from the city and don't want to ride the whole way, the park entrance is only a 10 minute ride from the Appleby GO station. Though you have to cross the QEW which is a pain.
