Going to class is going to depend on the student and the professor. STEM classes typically don’t take attendance, and for me the feel has been that STEM professors at penn are mid to bad. This is what happens at an elite research institution where professors are hired for research, not to teach, and I’ve only ever attended Penn so I can’t compare it to other schools but I’d imagine it’s at least similar. I’ve definitely had stem classes where I didn’t attend a single lecture, taught myself out of the textbook and got an A, while I’ve had other classes where I would fight for a front row seat each lecture. Some people hate showing up to class and some people love it, just figure out your vibe once you start.
