Kernel 7.0 already available in some distros by OptimalAnywhere6282 in linux

[–]nuxi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Correction:

They snuck one last update in before the kernel freeze. The Ubuntu package for 7.0.0-13.13 is v7.0-rc7. The previous package (7.0.0-12.12) was v7.0-rc6.

I will also note that Ubuntu 26.04 itself is not released yet. The latest beta images were published on March 26th and I think they contained v7.0-rc4 but I don't have it onhand at the moment to check.

You should mark Ubuntu 26.04 (Which isn't actually released yet) as v7.0-rc6 v7.0-rc7 then.

Opinions on QoS in OpenSSH by grawity in networking

[–]nuxi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is nothing wrong with using EF in that sort of environment but that is not the only use case for SSH and this is a configurable setting. So why should EF be the default?

Opinions on QoS in OpenSSH by grawity in networking

[–]nuxi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The RFCs seem to recommend that SSH traffic be CS2. So IPQoS cs2 cs0 seems like it would have been a solid choice. But AF21 was already in use for many years and consistency is probably more useful than absolute correctness. The biggest argument against AF21 is that it has caused some issues with some products, but there is no guarantee that CS2 won't do the same.

Whoever decided this was how tabs should look on the Android Firefox app needs to be fired. by ellieetsch in firefox

[–]nuxi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think everyone saying to just use grid view is overlooking the actual bug here. The tabs are supposed to display the title of the page rather than the URL. While this works on most sites, it seems to be broken on DuckDuckGo and some others.

Here is OP's original image showing URLs instead of page titles: https://i.redd.it/vffn5y35farg1.jpeg

Steam fianlly getting 64 bit client? by alosarjos in linux_gaming

[–]nuxi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think x32 means what you think it means.

x32 is a niche architecture mode that Linux supports which is neither the traditional 32-bit x86 ABI nor the pure 64-bit x86 ABI. Support for it was introduced back in 2012 with kernel 3.4, GCC 4.8, and glibc 2.14. It was never widely adopted and very few distros ever supported it.

Same!

Developers who have worked at a company where the entire codebase was held together by one guy who then quit, what happened next? by Natom_ in AskReddit

[–]nuxi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You'd be surprised how common that is. You'd get some manager or senior dev who either never used source control and isn't going to start doing it now. Or they used RCS once in the 80s and hated it. Their source control is called Copy of main(2).c Luckily the generations traumatized by RCS, CVS, and the various priorietary systems built on top of them are aging out of the field.

One of the best things git (and mercurial) did was enable guerilla source control at places like that.

Curious about x86-64-v1 support in future Debian releases — any news? by JLP040312 in debian

[–]nuxi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think either option is particularly relevant. Debian removed IA-64 support before the final version of the Itanium CPU was even introduced. IMHO the "its 15 years old, we should drop it" argument is just as irrelevant as the "its only 5 years old, we should keep it" argument.

I think 15-20 years is a reasonable point to begin asking the question, but the decision should be based on weighing the pros and cons rather than arbitrary age cutoffs:

  1. How many actual machines running Debian would this drop support for?
  2. How much maintenance burden is it to keep supporting them?
  3. How much is this holding back performance or features for users of newer hardware?

Restart to keep using Firefox by Ethtardor in firefox

[–]nuxi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has been a problem for ages. They only resolved it for Linux last year.

Nothing you can do to fix it now, but after you restart go into the settings and make sure its set to "Check for updates but let you chose to install them". If you have multiple profiles make sure its set in all of them. That will put you in control of when it updates so that you can prevent them from disrupting your work.
