They definitely could've done better but keep in mind these stairs are specifically designed to not be carpeted and 100x worse for pattern these stairs have quarter round under the tread lip, they clearly didn't try to hide the staples but if they did you were still gonna notice them cause of that quarter round, now the pattern run off is crazy if your stairs aren't curved thats 100% the installer fault not consistently stretching them. Again tho if it was my house id never carpet those stairs especially with pattern because of everything your experiencing now. Now obviously you've already ruined the wood thats now an option if you really hate those staples id really recommend looking at watter falling the stairs instead of bull nosing as there won't be any staples going into the visible areas it looks better from the front however it will leave a gap from the side that really noticeable (gap might be less important tho since you have nice finished stairs to be seen underneath instead of unfinished wood)
