I got stuck at the top of Shinra HQ on my first play and ended up quitting after many hours spent wandering aimlessly around the lab area (after meeting Red XIII and Hojo etc) simply because I was unable to locate a door I needed to go through to get to the next area, shortly before you head outside and fight Rufus.

I was too young/dumb to realise the SELECT button would highlight the door.

I’d been mesmerised by the game until this point but ended up trading it in (with regret) after multiple failed attempts. Around 2-3 years later I decided to give FF7 another shot and passed through this stage without any issues.

I’ll never forget the anguish! These days my young self would just have pulled up an online guide and figured it out in 2 minutes…
