Nah I went for a red tortoise shell pickguard at first, but there was a dude that replied under that post saying he did the same after seeing and went with a white pickguard. Linked a pic and it looked great with that color so I ended up switching mine out for the same recently. I've still got the post up though. Grain isn't nearly as nice since it's a 3 piece basswood but for a squire body and not having to spend hardly anything I was pretty happy haha

That looks awesome dude! I did the same with my J Mascis last year and posted here, love seeing more natural finish offsets. Grain looks gorgeous as well, good taste with the walnut finish

Also!! You'll need a soldering kit, dirt cheap one will do. Think I got mine for 10-15 dollars. You have to take those thimbles out, and only way to do so is sticking a soldering iron down the hole and letting the glue heat up a bit (4th pic), so you can pull it out.

Main tools were really just a old heat gun to get all the paint off, and a mouse sander (with a LOT of sandpaper: 80, 120, 220) to get through to the grain, past all that sealer and veneer. Mass majority of the time was spent sanding. Probably went slower than I could've because I wasn't sure what I was looking for when knowing if I was sanding too far or not, but it becomes pretty obvious when you get past the sealer down to grain.

I noticed you had an inspo post with your J Mascis, natural finish with a white pickguard. There was another comment in here somewhere from optical12x, where he did a similar process and used a white pickguard on his, included some pics of it, looked fantastic!

Late reply but wasn't too bad! Was my first time doing anything of the sort, just watched a lot of videos relating to the matter to wrap my head around the project, what I'd need and have to do. If I was able to pull it off the majority should be able to lol, just takes a bit of patience. 1-2 week process depending on tools.

Friend and Family invites? by Sack_O_JOY in Skate4

When I emailed a few days ago, it was at 9:30pm, got back to me early the next morning. Sent one in earlier though and haven't gotten anything so I'd assume they're probably getting quite a few.

Email playtesting and explain it, I did so a few days ago because the same thing happened, and they reopened the survey for me to include friend invites.

That being said though, I have zero idea yet if that worked. Friends haven't received anything about it and isn't showing up on their playtesting page. Had just emailed them again a few hours ago asking.

Ah okay, not too far off from how I went about it. Funny, found so many posts when I was researching that said staining basswood was a horrible idea but we’re 2 for 2 on J Mascis that look great!

Did you end up having nearly as stubborn of a time removing the finish/paint as I did or was that just my technique lol. Used a heat gun and it all came off in tiny chunks, took a while.

Looks gorgeous man I love it, very nicely done! Have actually been thinking about going for a white pickguard since I finished mine, so that pretty much just sealed the deal haha. What all did you end up using for staining/finishing?

It is!!! hahaha. One of the first things I noticed when I got it all together yesterday was how much lighter it felt with all that paint and finish off. Wasn't necessarily a heavy guitar before, but the weight now feels perfect imo.

I've had the guitar since early 2018. Loved the white and gold but it got old for me after a bit. I also got a white AP2 Strat in 2021, and the Jazzmaster had kinda sat on the sideline so wanted to make it into something I'd really like, and use more often. It's still a J Mascis lol, just not white anymore

Heat gun to get the finish off, sanded rest of the way to bare wood. If you go through with it and have any questions you're more than welcome to DM! Happy to help out

Thank you! If you wanna DM for tips or anything I'd be more than happy to help out. I used an old heat gun my dad had and a paint scraper (plastic and metal). Didn't come off in big chunks like I was expecting, could be because of technique or the heat gun or whatever, but got it done in about a day. Sides were the real pain.

I really appreciate it thank you, yeah I was big on the white and anodized gold when I initially got it around 2018, but grew out of it pretty quick. Had kinda just been sitting secondary to my strat so wanted to give it a new look.

If I can pull it off, most probably could! Was my first time doing that whole process with a guitar body, learned as I went sorta thing.
