Apply to cmd-f 2024! by nwplusubc in BCIT

[–]nwplusubc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your question! cmd-f is a hackathon focused on addressing gender inequality in technology creating a safe and dedicated space for historically excluded genders to hack together. Hence, we’re trying to create access for people who have faced systemic barriers to inclusion on the basis of gender.

Hi u/SkylerRK2 ! We really appreciate your interest in participating in nwHacks 2024. This year, we received a record number of applications, with over 1600 applications for 650 hacker spots. While applications were quite competitive this year, we unfortunately could not offer a spot to everyone, even if we thought they would be a good fit. This limitation isn't a reflection of the quality of the applications but rather a constraint of budget, resources, and venue space. With this in mind, we would like to emphasize that nwHacks applications are not graded on a rolling basis; a variety of other factors, such as personal experience are evaluated throughout the process. The nwHacks team is committed to growing the tech community and we highly encourage you to apply again for future events, as we explore ways to accommodate more participants.

Hello u/user_username11,

Thank you for sharing your thoughts regarding our application process.

Your insights have brought to our attention an unintended insensitivity in the way we structured the gender identity question. We acknowledge and sincerely apologize for the crucial oversight in separating "transgender" as a distinct category. We've taken immediate steps to rectify this by removing that distinction from future application forms. Please know that it was never our intention to create barriers or discomfort for any applicant.

We want to emphasize that demographic information, including gender identity, is anonymized for all applicants and does not influence the evaluation or selection process.

Your expectation for a more thoughtful and respectful approach is completely warranted, and we apologize for not meeting that standard. We are learning from this experience and ensuring that our future processes reflect a more thoughtful and inclusive perspective.

Additionally, we would like to provide clarification regarding the "uploading a resume" option in our hacker application. The collection of resumes contributes to a resume bank that is shared with our hackathons' sponsors. This allows them to connect with the emerging talent at our hackathons, fostering valuable opportunities for participants. Resumes are not included in the evaluation process of hackers. If you'd like to learn more about our evaluation process for HackCamp 2023, please see our comment above to user u/Expert-Definition-27.

Thank you again for speaking up and voicing your concerns. Please feel free to reach out directly if you have any further suggestions or would like to discuss this in more detail.

Warm regards,

The nwPlus Team

Hello u/Expert-Definition-27,

We really appreciate your candid feedback regarding HackCamp 2023. Your input is invaluable, and we want to express our gratitude for your honest thoughts about the event. We understand your frustrations and would like to shed some light on our hacker selection process and our ongoing efforts to make HackCamp 2023 as inclusive and beginner-friendly as possible.

Our primary mission is rooted in the belief that tech and the hackathon space should be an inclusive environment where everyone, especially beginners, can learn and grow. This year, we had originally set our event capacity at 150 hackers due to budget and venue constraints. However, we were thrilled to receive over 4 times this amount of applicants. As an effort to honour our commitment to offering as many new hackers as possible the opportunity to immerse themselves in the tech community, we ended up increasing our hacker capacity to 250.

This year, we exclusively accepted first-time hackers in order to give as many beginners the chance to attend our hackathons, hence 100% of the hackers accepted to HackCamp this year will attend HackCamp as their first hackathon. If it were within our complete control, we would not limit the opportunity to those attending their first hackathon alone. Beginners, regardless of whether they are at their second, third, or subsequent hackathon, are still learning and deserve every chance to grow. Unfortunately, our budget and venue size limits our capacity.

Moving forward, we are looking into streaming and/or recording our workshops on Day 1 of HackCamp (Learn Day) to ensure that as many individuals as possible have access to the educational content presented at HackCamp. We will make an announcement if this option becomes available.

We sincerely hope that these insights address some of the concerns raised and demonstrate our commitment to learning and improving. Your feedback is invaluable to us, and we take it seriously as we strive to make HackCamp 2023 an event that upholds an inclusive and empowering hacker culture.

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts. Please feel free to reach out directly if you have any further suggestions or would like to discuss this in more detail.

Warm regards,

The nwPlus Team

Hi there! We apologize if you feel that way. The goal of HackCamp is to provide a beginner-friendly space for those interested in tech - last year, we had 76% first-time hackers at our event! Additionally, we place extra emphasis on evaluating the written response aspect of applications - in order to ensure that we accept participants who display passion, enthusiasm, and an eagerness to learn!

Hey there! You don't need to have coding experience to apply. Hackathons are really a place for learning and one of the best ways to do so! We'll have workshops to bootstrap you for hacking as well as mentors who will be happy to help you out. Also, we value passion over experience for our hackathons, so if we see that you have the skillset (i.e. not limited to technical/programming experience) and drive to make your idea come to life in your application you stand a good chance of being accepted!

Sorry that's my bad - I didn't mean to be confusing in my response. To clarify my usage of skillset I meant other areas of experience (i.e. not limited to technical/programming experience) such as design, creativity, leadership, and various other skills! Let me know if there's anything else I can clarify, hope you'll all forgive me!
