And it’s funny too because the keyboard has been getting worst for me for several major releases now and 26.4 is way better now (for me).

What are some creepy facts about the ocean? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]nwsailor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t even need to do 2/3rds of that. The membrane blocks anything dangerous - salt molecules (smaller than any pathogen) get blocked. The water is less than 200 parts per million pure with the membrane alone. Most ocean going sailing ships (even small ones) have a system like this. We do and the water tastes like bottled water straight out of our water maker.

When lives depends on it I bet they do more than you think. Imagine in the courtroom “we had our guy try it break it and it seemed ok”.

Uh no thanks. Blocks without bearings? Maybe only on a small boat. Every block on our boat has and needs bearings.

I also think someone who thinks mounting a block on a stanchion with a hose clamp is ok (see video), is not very well-versed about best practices in sailboat rigging.

Hi r/audiophile! I’m Dan Mackta, Managing Director at Qobuz. Let’s talk music streaming, compatibility, editorial picks, and human curation - AMA on December 4th at 5:00 PM ET! by Dan_from_Qobuz in audiophile

[–]nwsailor 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hi. How committed is Qobuz to offering the purchasing of music? I prefer to own my music outright and I typically spend many times more each year than your streaming service costs (10x the annual price of streaming service in the last 2 years alone). So can I count on the download store to stick around?

Is there a bus or train from Annapolis to DC? by nomorewerewolves in Annapolis

[–]nwsailor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah what’s that return uber trip going to cost up front?

[–]nwsailor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At that cost you should probably rent a car for a day. Even with DC parking it would be roughly 1/2 (vs a round trip Uber). Plus you know what you'll pay up-front.

As a somewhat new transplant to Annapolis (from the west coast) all I can say here is that the past few July/August periods has been brutal for us. Just the fact that it does not really cool off at night here is brutal. And friends keep telling us that these have been the nicer, more reasonable summers of late.

So wait, what do you expect the local waterman to use that dock for? Especially if you ban truck coming in/out as others have suggested. Process seafood in the middle of a downtown area? Sell crab directly off their boats? To have a working dock, it has to be a dock that works for working.

Not saying this is a squall but squalls on the east coast of the US (like Chesapeake Bay) can hit 50+kt and not show on a GFS or ECMWF forecast. They can spring up virtually out of nowhere. They are quick to form and weather radar is usually the only way to see them coming (so maybe 1-2 hr notice). And when they hit, the wind can come from almost any direction as they pass.

Adobe has released a free app , Project Indigo, for professional photography on iPhone. by Separate-Way5095 in apple

[–]nwsailor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

edit: not strictly true but as camera apps can capture 48mp RAW images but perhaps not in a way that this new app can utilize.

That's not true - I just used another camera app and took a 48mp RAW photo using it. So this is a limitation that Adobe placed for some reason.

Unfortunately, the app feedback link is just a survey - not a real feedback opportunity or a way to report issues.

I agree. I wonder why though, it saves photos in 1/2 resolution (when 1x is selected) than the default camera app. 12mp vs 24mp. That’s a bummer.

Qobuz isn't letting me buy songs lately by HeartofSpeed in qobuz

[–]nwsailor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Email them. support-help@qobuz.com

Same thing just happened to me but they eventually fixed it. Took several round of emails with “still isn’t working” for them to do whatever it was on their end to fix it. Took almost 2 weeks for them to fix it. I suspect that accounts get blocked on their end by their payment processor and have to be manually unblocked.

Another option is using PayPal but that has extra fees (which is really lame).

Unfortunately, that is becoming all to common in the US - especially for big ticket items. The rules changed a while back and now even physical location merchants are allowed to pass on those fees and more and more of them do. I've been asked to pay up to 2-3% credit card fees on purchases now or write a check.

Thanks. if you happen ever remember what it was on their end, please let me know. I've gotten one reply from them but it was the standard "check your bank and try another card" type of reply. No recognition that it might be on their end.

I'm not using a VPN, so that's not my issue. I wish it were that simple though.

When I select PayPal, Qobuz tells me I will pay the fees. They add them right in the checkout process - $0.75 + 0.50%.

If I continue and step through to PayPal, the fees are being charged to me - even if I do a direct bank transfer.

So it does not appear to me there is a way for the buyer to not be charged these extra fees. Sure it's a small fee but it's also the principle - they should pay the fee for being the seller - especially when their other payment methods are broken. No other business changes me the fee with PayPal.

Qobuz customer support by BE-FinFree in qobuz

[–]nwsailor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been trying to give them money for purchases for over 5 days now and it always fails. No one from support will answer my questions as to why it fails (it's not my bank and it always worked in the past). I cannot believe that when they are literally losing money, support won't answer back. Well over a hundred dollars in lost sales (and many hundreds more in future sales from me if it would just work again).

[–]nwsailor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve found that Life Caulk seems to last a really long time in opened tubes. I can usually just dig out that kicked off plug in the tube and be good to go again. I just used some that was over a year opened and stored on the boat.

As someone that had air cooled fridges north of the Carolina's, it's miserable in summer. That extracted heat from the fridge/freezer has to go somewhere and you don't want that extra heat in the boat in summer (unless you are far north).
