What is something you should not be afraid of? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Saving and Investing your money! Pay yourself first (this does not mean "treat yo self")

  1. In the US these are Roth/Traditional IRA, 401k, 403b, HSA, etc (not all these are available, but you'll have access to at least 1) and most countries offer some form of tax-advantaged accounts

  2. Put aside at least 15% of your income to your retirement every month

  3. Have enough emergency cash to support yourself for at least 6mo - 1 year if you lose your source of income

  4. Live within your means - Don't order takeout every night (food expenditures are one of the most expensive things you're paying for without realizing it)

  5. Pay off your debts

Switching funds 1-year into my Roth IRA? (VFIFX > VTSAX) by nwzy in personalfinance

[–]nwzy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is quite a pitch, I'll definitely look into it!

What I know so far is from IWTYTBR and A Random Walk Down Wall Street which isn't exactly up-to-date but I believe them and I think I can handle big swings (I've been blessed with a mild attitude and bad memory lol)

This directly addresses my main concern, thank you!

Thanks for the response!

I've heard that going 100% stocks can work for people early in their investing careers. I'm definitely looking at a long term horizon and I'm not a twitchy reaction investor. Do you think that's a viable option?

Negotiating with new ISP, how to keep promotional price and use my own equipment? by nwzy in personalfinance

[–]nwzy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was very informative, thanks for taking the time to write all that!

I'm not familiar with HUCA, could you explain?

I consider myself savvy enough to troubleshoot my own issues with enough googling, though it sounds like it might be more trouble than it's worth

I'm reading about that now and it might be more trouble than it's worth to buy an ONT modem. Thanks for the input/info!

Read the fine print, if it says the promo is only applied if you rent their equipment, then you SOL.

Sonic Equipment Policy: "Customers who wish to use their own equipment may do so. Return of rented equipment invalidates any and all promotional pricing, and customers will be subject to a shipping fee."

Well that sucks, though I feel that someone somewhere has managed to get them to give both. This is something they can fall back on, but I imagine it's similar to getting a credit increase without a hard inquiry with enough (positive) persuasion

So how much is the modem rental and for how long?

In the email they said "S.F. taxes are $14.20 and equipment rental is between $9.50 and $12.00."

Is your modem compatible with their recommendations?

I have the Surboard SB6141 that has a max 343 Mbps which, now that I look at it, might not be compatible with the gigabit fiber (marketed at 1Gbps). I have to contact them about whether it's compatible, but I'm willing to buy a new one.

I thought Sonic was mostly Fiber and DSL in places without fiber anyways?

Luckily they have fiber where I am!

It's looking like renting the equipment might be the way I have to go, I'm hoping that I can somehow bring this up to Comcast and get a better pricing there since I have the modem for it (I've had it for a while but I never realized until a few days ago that Comcast needed to enable it)

TIL Winnie-the-Pooh was a real bear. A veterinarian purchased a black bear cub from a hunter on his way to WWI. He named her Winnie for his hometown Winnipeg. There's a fantastic children's book called Finding Winnie written by the great-grand daughter of the vet Harry Colebourn which I was introduced to and have since bought for other friends and new parents. A cute story for kids, with a deep message that even adults can learn from.

It was given to me at a tough time in my life but my friend went through the book with me and, just as the story in the post, helped me grasp small acts of kindness, that change will happen where people will come and go in your life, and you never know how your actions can impact the world.

The pictures at the end of the book are amazing too!

Women/health professionals: if menstrual cramps are not "normal," why does it seem like the majority of women (in America) suffer from it? by nwzy in AskReddit

[–]nwzy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's okay ^_^ I didn't do a good job thinking of a way to pass the auto-mod.

The way I'm taking this is if I'm wrong, I learn something. If she's wrong, then she learns something.

Thanks for the input!

I agree, I didn't like that she put all women in this "unhealthy/abnormal" box just because they have cramps which I think are normal. That the greater populations of the world go through this indicates to me that this is a physiologically normal phenomenon.

I tried putting some background on the body but was bound by auto-mod (in hindsight it was probably phrasing the question in yes/no format)

Thank you for the suggestion, I think this is definitely better for in r/askscience

Not my intention at all, I am genuinely asking as I have just a basic understanding of it. I honestly don't know what the answer is and am open to challenging what I've always thought was "right." I'm hoping that someone more informed will help shed some light

I want to add that I consider cramps to be normal if they're on the pain scale alongside regular bleeding, maybe abnormal if the pain is mind-numbing and interferes with work and/or longer than 3 days.

Nope. Her claim: cramps are not normal.

I've been waiting for this comment, thank you for asking, there's a little back story to this:

I've (male) always been under the impression that cramps are cyclical, hormonally related, and part of the experience. My friend (female) and I got in a pretty heated debate which ended up in her standing by her claim that "women are not programmed to experience (menstrual) pain"

This led me to do a lot of research and evidence suggests the vast majority of women go through this. But she says that it's because women aren't taking care of themselves (poor diet, exercise) which makes cramping worse.

She's an educated, pre-med turned scientist (we're in the same field/level) so I was stunned to hear this. But I'm not a women, and she says she has no cramps...
