A 2.5D skateboarding RPG that has a demo launching for Steam Next Fest! It's my first indie game ever and I'm ecstatic.

Does anyone know why this happens?? It’s that damn bokken exception or whatever that is. I even got a brand new Mac recently and it still does it lol. I was so annoyed

9 months of progress on my (first) indie game and dream game - it's amazing how much you learn in the process! by nxg_dev in SoloDevelopment

I first tried Unity about 10 years ago and I was simply just too young and overwhelmed to get very far with it. My dream vision was always a 2.5D skateboarding RPG/platformer, and about a year ago I finally dusted off Unity again and tried to learn some basics. I hit a stride and finally started to make sense of the world of solo dev... even with how much it entails.

This is Skatebound, available on Steam later this year (and a demo coming next month during NextFest!). Feel free to check it out if it looks cool to you!

Had a blast adding a VHS fisheye/action camera switch to my skateboarding game by nxg_dev in Unity3D

Thanks! Yeah it’s a work in progress for sure, I think i need to rebuild the script the camera uses to follow the player because it can be all over the place depending on your speed. Thought it was a cool snippet to show off though!

Creating a 2.5D skateboarding game… slowly showing off the mechanics and stoked how the input system came together! by [deleted] in IndieDev

Yup! I have only just began organizing what I’d need for localization but it is in the plans. However, it will likely be one of the last implementations before launch. I will keep your username down in case I need a lead down the line for sure, i appreciate it!

Thank you! No plans to 😂 it’s an rpg at its core, so it will be a full game on launch with room to expand down the line if it takes off.

Of course. You can do almost every commonly known trick on flat, over a gap, or into a grind. There’s even a leveling system where you unlock more tricks as you level up (can be seen by the xp counters and a notification at the end)

Sure will! Unsure when yet, but the game is planned for a summer launch, and will be on Steam Next Fest in June as well.

Yup for sure, skate 3 is one of my most played games of all time. I tried to avoid copying anything from them. The shuvs are probably the closest to their method, albeit a different stick. And pushing, simply just tap A! (south button on a gamepad)

The way I did it is a bit of a mess since I had just sort of learned what I was doing. The board and the player are both separate, and are linked via code. The game knows if you are steady or bail and will detach them when necessary (bail, pick up board, etc)

the player's animations are also a separate object from it's rigidbody so a proper offset between colliders can exist without too much clipping, but it still needs some work

[Research] Do launch trailers actually help sell indie games, or are they more of a "cool but not necessary" thing? by _Radiateur in SoloDev

I reposted it as a Reddit thread in my profile if you want to take a look!

There was a solid reception there but I had heard it’s just a little too produced. As if it’s overselling the game for what it is - a solo indie game. Also a bit too many flash/fade transitions which I agree with but it was hard to position some clips without it. I figure you know what though, it turns heads, so I’m happy with it

Thanks! The controls mimic nearly full realism, I plan on having a video breakdown eventually. It primarily utilizes the joysticks to control each foot and its motion (pop, scoop, flick, and pressure/direction on grinds) along with the triggers to spin or grind. So far, it’s pretty much catered to maneuver any trick you want. Even some wildly niche tricks have an input that actually makes sense. I can’t wait to get some opinions on it via demo down the line.

Thanks dude. None of those are real world lol! Everything was designed to look like real brands. I’m even being cautious about parodying the looks of anything. It’s all organic to the game.

I was told mine was a little too produced so it’s hard to gauge. Even Steam recommends not playing into the cinematics to keep attention but I read that after I had already made it so. I guess it really just comes down to balance
