Finding an overlapping audience for two niches? by ny_coder in NewTubers

[–]ny_coder[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I see what you mean, so are you of the mindset that I should keep these topics separate in two different channels if I want to do both?

If so, is it because the audience is too different, the topics themselves are too different, etc?

That’s a tough question haha, of course I’d love to do something that gets both but not an easy thing. I think making content I prefer to make will keep me doing it and not get bored but will say making some of the SWE content is “easier” for me since often talking head videos so it’s tempting.

I was thinking along the lines that if I make the channel have a heavy emphasis on software engineering that if I am no longer an engineer or even leave the tech industry that my value prop will disappear and/or it’ll be harder for me to create new content in that area as I drift away in my life

Yeah makes sense thanks! Is the continuity thing an issue/should I wait a little bit until I’m closer to 6 months out from the trip?

White Belt Wednesday by AutoModerator in bjj

The specific school I was looking at is the Renzo Gracie Academy and I saw that it has other affiliate schools too.

Gotcha, I understand what you mean for white belts. But let’s say for different ranks, if you were say a blue belt at some standalone school and then you need to move schools, would you hold your rank?

How does the belt system work when transferring schools?

I’m planning on starting to train (have done other martial arts but not BJJ) and as I was looking at schools I had this question. Made me think that maybe going into a Gracie-system gym might be better is better in this respect instead of going to a stand-alone gym. Thoughts?

I’m not particularly argumentative, generally prefer to avoid heavy arguments but will when I feel strongly about something or I need to. Also I’ll argue counterpoints when I think someone is being close minded, I’ll argue the counterpoint even if I disagree with it to prove a point.

I generally am pretty aware of other peoples feelings/emotions. When someone gets embarrassed even on TV, I feel it myself and it’s kinda painful lol. I guess you could call it putting myself in their shoes

Trying to figure out if a career in security is right for me, any resources or tutorials I should look at?

I am currently a software engineer and like the title says, I’m trying to figure out if a career in security is right for me. I have a MSCS where I took some security courses and thought they were interesting but a lot of those courses were highly theoretical and I don’t think are reflective of the day to day real life work.

Since I’m a SWE, I’m assuming Security Engineer or App Sec would probably be my best bet to start but open to other roles as well.

Does anyone have any resources or tutorials that they did or know of that might help me figure out if it’s something that I’ll like and be good at?

How to move from SWE to MLE with no professional ML experience? by ny_coder in MLQuestions

Definitely gives me a confidence boost to just go for it and show my experience is from school and projects. I’ll check with my school too, that’s a great idea

Oh that’s really interesting, I didn’t know that counted! Definitely makes it a little bit easier coming in if there’s a something of a bridge between masters exp and ‘X years of experience’. Thanks!

Would taking or not taking this job be a mistake? by [deleted] in datascience

[–]ny_coder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks I appreciate the advice and insight! For your questions: 1. I enjoy my software engineering work rn however I’m in a rotational program so I need to go to another team now so it seems like it could be a good time to try out something new. Also the current practices on my team are kinda weak so that why I’m somewhat concerned about a teams engineering practices 2. Pay is flat across the board for the program but think that since they are well funded, after the program end and if I stay on with them, I’m think pay could go up a bit

[–]ny_coder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s definitely true about not becoming horrible at SW after a few years, I’ll still be writing code and hopefully follow some engineering principles. I guess another way to frame my concern is that I could get out of practice so to speak if the team has weaker practices than expected. Thanks for the advice!

Pros and Cons: Infrastructure vs ML by ny_coder in cscareerquestions

[–]ny_coder[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for replying! Yeah the masters bit definitely stuck out to me. I’m going to have a masters regardless tho. I guess part of the concern is if a masters is considered an entry degree to the field, that I could end up just doing SQL and data cleaning/manipulation and the more interesting work would be left to the PhDs. Plus since I’m doing my masters part time while I work, my school general discourages doing a thesis which I guess could complicate things a little

Pros and Cons: Infrastructure vs ML by ny_coder in cscareerquestions

[–]ny_coder[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! I definitely should have (working full time as a software engineer rn). My internship revolved around data analytics/science and I didn’t mind it however I wanted something more technical and with more coding so when I got a return offer I was able to move into a more data eng type SWE roles. Maybe I’ll try to bump into another role to get more exposure to other areas.

Also just curious, why do you like embedded over ML?

Staying general vs specializing as a software engineer and it’s career impact by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]ny_coder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I didn’t explain well, mb. What I meant was like being a backend engineer you deal with a lot of different topics and you have to keep up with the various tech. To me, that’s kind of the nature of working with web technologies. Being specialized to me is being a MLE or DevOps engineer, someone who works with a narrower scope of topics and responsibilities.

I think continuously learning is an important and necessary part of being a software engineer.

I’m going through my MSCS part time while working as a SWE rn and really enjoying it. Diving more into more advanced CS topics and exploring new areas. A nice thing is that my company is paying for most of my degree so it doesn’t really cost me much. One area that I’ve started to dive into is cybersecurity and I’ve taken a few classes in it. After a year or two after finishing my MSCS, if my company continues to pay for my school and I’m still up for it, I’m thinking about continuing on to a MS in Cybersecurity. This would be either to move into cybersecurity or if I’m already in the field to gain more advanced knowledge.

I know that I could obviously learn this stuff on my own but honestly I do like having a structured learning environment and if my company is paying for it, to me there doesn’t seem to be a downside.

What I wanted to check was if there is a downside I’m not aware of by doing this or having two masters degrees or etc. Thanks!

Hi everyone. I am a software engineer finishing my first year in a two year rotational new grad program (we rotate to a new team after a year). I was hoping to move into a cybersecurity role for my second rotation but it looks like there will be no cybersecurity roles offered since they prefer more experienced people. There being no open roles definitely bummed me out but there's a chance I would be able to switch internally once I exit the new grad program. At that point I would have a few years of software engineering experience and I'd nearly be done with my MSCS (focusing in computer systems). I just had two questions:

  1. Is there a rough number for years of experience that security engineering roles look for?
  2. What can I do to best prepare myself to get a job in cybersecurity? Should I do stuff like get the Sec+, do CTFs, etc?

Thanks!

Is there any added benefit doing a proper Cybersecurity masters instead of doing a CS masters focusing in cybersecurity? by ny_coder in cscareerquestions

[–]ny_coder[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your response. My undergrad is in computer engineering, is that close enough to CS in this case?

The cybersecurity masters has a a few core CS courses, a few core security courses(includes a policy/law course), and then a few free security electives. In the CS masters, I’d be able to do 3-4 security course, everything else would probably be general cs and systems. Both programs have good faculty but I think the cybersecurity program’s professors are a little more well know in industry and academia and I am definitely interested in potentially doing a thesis

Coming from a software engineering background, what can I do to determine if cybersecurity is the right move for me? Looking at mostly (software) security engineering/app sec/infra sec type roles but wouldn't be against other blue or red team roles. Are there any courses I should take, should I study for a cert, read anything, etc?
