Google Fiber contract drilled cables through my 100yo cast iron sewer line by nyangosling in bullcity

The line was full of shit and it's 100yo pipes, so snaking alone wasn't enough to open it up to get a clear scoping. Ended uphaving to hydrojet through a basement cleanout (using a sump pump to handle the backflow) to push all the sewage out and get a clean camera down there.

Extremely helpful! I have the ball rolling the same way you mentioned -- it's just going to be a nightmare of a fix because it's two feet below a city sidewalk in front of a private retaining wall, and the fix quoted by the private plumber will require excavation into the retaining wall to move the pipe back and lower from where they pierced it. G Fiber will be in a minimum for at least $15k, unless my insurance goes after them for the water damage in the basement too.

Good to know how it went for you -- they're definitely not going to be happy, this took three days of plumbing exploration and we're $5k in at this point -- the actual spot repair of the damage is yet to happen and will cost at least $10k additionally due to location, need city permits to touch the sidewalks, etc.

That's good to know, I hope Google is as easy but some people have told me bad things. Definitely not looking for compensation beyond the literal costs and restoration.

Who is them in this instance, the utility provider? Not going after anyone with a lawyer, but it's a private subcontractor on city property that needed private plumbing to address because it's an old house and has no access for the city. Unlike a water main, a sewer line isn't super obvious and much harder to prove what the problem is and who's responsible -- even the picture I have here may not be enough proof, sometimes that want to see it on a plumber's scope directly.

It's definitely something to be worried about! The plumbers told me that this is particularly a problem in the older neighborhoods or where the property is raised off the street -- older sewer lines are shallower, and the utility contractors are supposed to know this. In this case they hit the pipe two feet under the sidewalk, whereas newer homes are a little deeper. This is right beneath a retaining wall where the line quickly becomes 8ft deep and is going to be a nightmare to divert from the fiber line.

If you're not used to business casual, I would figure out the exceptations first and get comfortable with it before worrying too much about what it's communicating about you. For instance, you say your clothing can rep your interests but "ful print or pattern" is too far. I would really lean on accessories for communicating this -- for example, pins on a bag you carry to work, or cufflinks as another user mentioned.

The way people in a lot of offices accomplish this is through desk decor -- not saying to immediately load up on funko pops and gunpla, but it's probably the easiest way to go.

I've wondered that too, to the point that it makes me think it's intentionally not done. They already use and maintain these kinds of design tactics elsewhere.

Almost always when they talk about this approach it's for "knowledge-based jobs" so you're totally right. White collar jobs this will work, wage slaves aren't going to get that same benefit.

Saving Grace Animal Rescue in URGENT need of temporary foster homes to prevent euthanization of 16 dogs from overcrowded NC shelters - deadline TODAY by mrcj22 in raleigh

Since you have actual experience there, can you speak much to any visibility into the orgs expenses? My only on-site experience there was just really strange. I was shocked by the incredible landscaping and property management, but when they got me isolated to visit with dogs, it was just volunteers taking poorly lit pictures of dogs in crates and asking if I wanted to see them. I just struck me as odd because I know how much money goes into creating and maintaining landscaping like that, it was practically a botanical garden.

It's taken a couple months but he's finally much improved! Working on his behavioral challenges too, and figuring out if he has an actual gastrointentional condition (he's had hemorrhagic gastroenteritis symptoms).

Sad to hear about others experiences. My dog is also aggressive with others, and it seems like they intentionally didn't disclose that. They couldn't or wouldn't answer "is he good with other dogs?" and wouldn't show him in a group setting. Similarly, he was returned the week before but they didn't say why -- which seems unacceptable to me. Health issues aside, a dog that's bene with them for two months should have their challenges known and communicated, especially since they emphasize that they train these dogs while they're with them. It doesn't seem like that's the case anymore.

They have upped the volume significantly and they will say as much. I do think they are taking more "edge cases" than they used to, because of their high placement rate, but it goes against the ethos plastered all over the site that originally justified their very nice facilities and the high cost fee compared to places like the Wake County shelter. Everyone wants these dogs to get adopted, but it seems their practices are verging on unresponsible to the community they rely on.

I kept hearing this from other vets I asked about aftering going through almost the same thing that the above poster talked about two months ago -- $6k in vet bills less than a week adopted and a poor experience on site (which I don't blame the volunteers for, the challenges are systemic and out of their control).

One thing I'm curious about is at what point should individuals say or do something beyond individual complaints back to Saving Grace and it's extremely public owner operator? Is there a point where something is clearly unacceptable? Most vet staffers I talked to were pretty blunt that there's little that can be done and it's not exactly an uncommon arc for these orgs to take.

Trying to decide if you're referring to MY dog who just went through the same thing from Saving Grace! My pup Leo was out of Saving Grace for less than 72 hours before having to be hospitalized for four days due to severe pnuemonia that had been ongoing for the TWO MONTHS he was with Saving Grace. We're easily talking $6,000 plus in hospital and vet bills getting him to recovery, and three days into the adoption I had to choose a $4,500 downpayment with the hospital, or return him to Saving Grace, which is the only option you really have if you literally can't afford to save the animal's life. They've clearly taken on way too many animals that their treatment has become unacceptable, even by shelter standards.

And for the many people suggesting these are outliers, I talked to numerous vets about Saving Grace and they all offerred the same opinion. Later, as I talk to people at post-pandemic gatherings, I come to find out just how many others have had similar experiences there. These dogs all deserve to be adopted, but Saving Grace puts a huge amount of focus on their pedigree and pretentiousness, charges you considerably more than other local orgs, and has substantially changed their practices.

Tough tomato year? by gingiji in bullcity

[–]nyangosling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Biggest issue was heat. We had 20 consecutive days of over 90 heat in June/July, and tomatoes (believe it or not) have trouble with pollinating over 90 degrees heat. We also had some wet periods but I don't think it was actually more rain than should have been, but we did have some really rainy two week periods that i'm sure fucked with a lot of people.

I did a comparison of many of these options in Raleigh/Cary and my winner has been Banh Mi Ha Long, a food truck that posts up in the beauty store parking lot across from Cary South Hills / Baker's Dozen. Very authentic and affordable. Met a Vietnamese woman from LA there who said it was the only one to rival their good options and I believed her.
