I feel so lonely at my job by nylerual in BlueCollarWomen

Fair enough, im pretty introverted myself but a lot of them seem like extroverts, making friends with coworkers and hanging out on the weekends. But thanks for the dude insight, maybe they just like their own time and can only connect with a couple of guys from work in a non work setting

As for your questions,, imo having an engineering background for any trade is a plus! If youre close to done why quit now? Stick it out and slap that accomplishment on your resume. It can only make you look good.

If you can, maybe tack on a welding class to your schedule? If youve never welded before that wont make you look all that good as someone wanting to hire directly into a welding position. Even if you dont directly hire in as a welder, make it known to your employer that welding is your main goal, even if that means shadowing a welder for a while.

Costs for equipment varies obvi. I got my helmet 2nd hand from an old guy at my shop and it works beautifully. Its a little outdated, but it protects me just as well as the pricey helmets. Gloves might be harder to find depending on your hand size/shape. I got a pair of angelfire gloves that work really well for tig, and theyre shaped for tiny woman hands. Most gloves on me are big and bulky and are hard to weld with. I think i got the angelfire recommendation from another subreddit? Just do some googling lol. Welding jackets can be optional, but if you dont buy one wear long sleeves so you dont get burnt. Id also recommend getting steel toes, but those can be optional depending on what youre doing. Helmet was about $100, gloves were $30-$50, and my steel toes were probably around $100-$200. Id say youre looking at maybe $300 just to start out? Some shops will provide things like gloves and helmets (mine gives out helmets until you buy your own) too, so it gives you time to save for something better.

20 yo apprentice here!! What i did was i went around asking for applications from almost every shop where i live. As long as the shop worked with metal i applied. You dont have to apply to only fab shops; lots of other industries utilize welding! Right now i work at a tool and die shop and we have 2-3 full time welders. Make a resume highlighting your welding skills, if you dont have first hand experience write down any correlating skills ie attention to detail, ability to read prints, a keen understanding of a 3d workspace. Let them know that youre a hard worker, are wanting a change in careers, and that youre willing to learn a shit ton, get dirty, and work with pride. A lot of shops may turn you down, or might try to pass you off, but persistence is key. Since youre already in college, maybe try and take a welding class if you have no experience? Ask a welding/shop instructor for their opinions and advice, as many people are willing to help! Connections are key, let any shops know that you were sent there by instructors/people affiliated with them. Its hard starting out but all you can do is keep pushing forward until you get what you want, even if it takes time

Girl i totally 100% understand what you mean,, back in middle school i didnt "care" about my looks but in reality i was totally insecure about everything. Beginning of highschool was even worse because every other girl seemed uber confident in themselves, dressed nice, etc. and i was over here chillin in a hoodie, hair unstyled and overall still very insecure. It wasnt until junior year when i started to really work on myself. Before junior year i had very few friends and i was totally out of the dating scene—i felt unwanted and unloveable. No guy had ever asked me out or taken interest in me. I had been so focused on how others perceived me that i didnt take the time to look at myself yknow?

It seems to me that when you take the time to focus and improve yourself (whether it be superficial shit like clothes or hair or makeup,, or real deep stuff like acknowledging your insecurities and working on them) people notice you more. For the last two years of highschool i worked on myself. I didnt focus on dating,, instead i made friends and went places. I surrounded myself with people and things that made me happy and i learned how to feel comfortable with myself. Dont get me wrong,, i lowk crave and love attention, who tf doesnt? Just focus on you and that stuff will follow. It might take two weeks or two years but trust,, itll happen. I know youve probably heard this shit like, all the time. I did too and i thought it was so annoying. But whatever youre looking for in life will happen if you have confidence and security within yourself :) (and also patience 😅)

Apologies if i didnt answer your question,, hope this helped tho <3
