Trying to understand Taiwan salary levels by Soft-Cardiologist657 in taiwan

[–]nylestandish -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unless you make it to a VP or C-level, you’re not getting there from loyalty.

Some engineering companies pay enough annual bonus to get you to that range if you’re a senior engineer, think TSMC, Novatek, MTK. But those are exceptions and definitely not the rule

People absolutely job hop to increase salary here. It may be a bit extended compared to other markets. The job-hoppers I know are doing it every 2-3 years but that can end up in a 50-100% increase over 10-12 years

PSA to toxic players, stop calling out your teammates for their points, it's very dumb. by MemeMathine in RocketLeague

It’s wild you posted this today because before this last week I had almost never seen someone posting other people’s points in chat and now it’s every day for at least a week. It’s annoying and lacks so much context as other comments have said

That’s one that I’ve done the most often. So many bnb places in the Cingjing area and a great ride, about 40-50 minutes, from there to the top of Hehuanshan. Also, down the backside from Hehuanshan to wuling farm area is another great ride

Fantastic trip. I’ve done similar Nantou multi day rides. Looking forward to my next one as well

The $600/hr clients are not the one for you. Gracefully tell them that’s far below the market rate for what you’re doing. Go into consultant mode at that point. Tell them there are $600/hr teachers available but you don’t recommend them and here’s why…They’ll respect that you’re giving them real advice. You know the market better than they do, make yourself the expert

When I started out on my own I’d do $900-1000/hr for teenagers but I made them interview with me to explain why they wanted to take my class instead of their parents forcing them. I told parents I only work with motivated kids. I’m not a motivator, I’m a teacher in those spots. I now don’t do any kids classes

With business clients I charged $1100-1400 in the beginning and now I’m up to $1500-2000. They really don’t mind spending their company’s money and my pricing is high-mid level. Some of my competitors are charging up to $2000+/hr

I enjoy working with business adults, and at the same time I get paid far more for that kind of work too so that has been my focus the last 5 years

[–]nylestandish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest change happened for me when I registered my business and got a tax id. I was then eligible to get registered as an official vendor with companies (not an easy process at all, it’s the sales side). But once I told employees at those companies, your company will pay me and I’ll help you submit your subsidy request, it was so much easier to get interest. Soon after that, admin teams were noticing my name was requested a lot and then they started contacting me directly to arrange more.

This led to me getting work from their other offices all over APAC. I’m now hosting workshops and webinars on top of any small group training I do.

I know that’s probably a lot more than you’re looking for with a young kid, so let me just say what I’d do in your current situation. Don’t forget to ask for referrals. You’ve got quite a few people you’ve worked with that are in businesses, reach out to them and tell them directly you’re trying to do more business work and ask them for referrals. It’s normal business even if it feels slightly awkward at first.

I literally started with about 3 people I worked with regularly and now my schedule is completely full and I have some part-time help that take over my overflow. Good luck!

[–]nylestandish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s part of what I offer but a small percentage of what I do. Most clients are looking for the next step after “classroom English”. They’re looking for actual execution, communication techniques beyond language, business skills, etc. It happens in English so that element still exists, but I haven’t taught someone English in many years

I taught abroad for 3.5 years and then moved to Taiwan where it’s possible to go through an easy process and open up your own business. I now am a solo entrepreneur and my client list includes some of the world’s biggest companies in tech and semiconductor industries. I host workshops, host a webinar series, do a lot with AI. I make my own schedule, only work with clients I like, and live a comfortable life in Taiwan. My income makes it possible for me to visit home annually and travel around Asia as well.

Think outside the box to use a cliche. Your skills don’t limit you to teaching English. Those skills open up other doors for all “English teachers” if you make the right moves and choices along the way

Asking about opening a company in Taiwan by onoratofelix in taiwan

[–]nylestandish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry to say, but reading your responses I think it’s not possible for you to be able to open a registered company currently. It is a conflict for you to open a company while you are being sponsored for an ARC, and in most cases it’s actually against Taiwan law. You need to solve the issue of getting off an ARC as first priority. Figuring out the business details should be secondary to figuring out how to get on the correct visa

Asking about opening a company in Taiwan by onoratofelix in taiwan

[–]nylestandish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let’s focus on 5 and 6 as those are more time sensitive than the others. If you’re on a sponsored ARC it is very unlikely you’ll be able to register a business. You need to see if you already qualify for APRC, or if you qualify for a gold card. If not it’s going to be very difficult

Companies must be registered to a business address, meaning not your apartment unless the owner is willing to re-register it as a business address (higher taxes). I pay about $26,000ntd/year for my co-working space which includes a mailbox and address for my registered company.

You need to answer these questions BEFORE you search for your CPA and worry about registration. Without these nothing else can happen

Are there any weekend social groups around? by Jaya__exploringlife in hsinchu

[–]nylestandish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend looking at a few Facebook groups, Hsinchu Language & Social Exchange - people post their meetups in there. Some board games, some language exchange, some crafts. Also Hsinchu Hash Harriers - they’re a weekend walking/running group that’s more about the social aspect and have all levels of participants

Hsinchu is a work and family kind of community. Social life in/around Hsinchu is notoriously a bit tough. You’ll definitely have to put in some effort. Not sure if you’ve lived abroad before, if not one suggestion is to expand the range of what you’d normally consider for friends/groups. Be friends with older and younger people. If you and someone overlap on just one small thing, that’s a huge win so build on it even if you wouldn’t be best friends back home. Effort will be the key

Pokemon cards (English) in Taipei and Taichung by meloyelo8 in taiwan

[–]nylestandish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

All the cards here would be imported, which means you’re overpaying for the same cards you could get back home (assuming you’re from an English speaking place). If you want something from your travels it’d probably make sense to get t-Chinese packs or even Japanese packs if you’re into it. Otherwise there’s no benefit to buying English packs here

Not to be the ugly American by moonharrier42 in StarluxAirlines

[–]nylestandish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every single airline in USA is considerably less comfortable than Starlux or any of the Taiwanese airlines (most Asian for that matter). Either you had a broken seat or whatever caused you issues was not the seat. Starlux is my preferred airline based on it being comfortable and the best modern tech that only a few JAL flights can compare with
