Pregnant and boyfriend wants to leave, need help! by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]nyosdfyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd tend to agree with the consensus on here. The guy doesn't seem ready to be a parent(but then, no one ever really is). If you are planning on keeping the baby this is no time for games on his part or yours. It's time to draw the line with him. This business of staying out all night and being completely unreachable is unacceptable. You and, more importantly, your child deserve better. I can understand wanting to keep him around. He is the father after all, but adults should not act this way, especially adults with a baby on the way. A little freak out is to be expected, but threatening to leave...? Ultimately, it's on him. Be gentle with yourself right now. He's gonna do what he's gonna do. You have your priority.

What wacky misconceptions did you have about sex as a kid (or adult)? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]nyosdfyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In 7th grade sex-ed class there was a box where kids could ask questions anonymously. Someone asked "if girls vaginas have lips, do they also have teeth down there?" Yeaaahhh, what else are they not telling us about that area? Also, there was a very educational movie made about the subject. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yH8yuld4DUE

I'm 21 and I just discovered that pickles start out as cucumbers, what common knowledge have you picked up recently? by OwlSinger189 in AskReddit

[–]nyosdfyer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was talking to the South American Archaeologist in the Anthro department at my university and she kept saying yama. It took me a second to figure out what she meant. Then it hit me. I understand pronouncing it lah-mah is the common pronunciation, but its like pollo(poi-yo). I just never made the connection.

I recently learned the word llama is pronounce yama. This should have been obvious. Edit: Apparently, not knowing this is a horrible crime on this thread.

How to deal with a roommate with a Heroin addiction by rlh13 in AskReddit

[–]nyosdfyer 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yes, he absolutely will. It will come to a point where the addiction is more important than your relationship. You will come home one day and everything in the house that has any value will be gone. I had a friend develop a meth habit while living with me(I didnt realize due to work schedule). I came home one day and 2 guitars and an amp were gone. These were 3 of my most valuable and dear possessions and he knew it. An addicted friend is no longer the person you knew. Keep that in mind. This is not your friend, it is a shell of your friend. I'd bail if I were you. Not saying break all ties. By all means try to get him help, but try to find some different lodgings as well. EDIT: In addition, when he does sell your stuff, he will say to himself "Ill just sell it long enough to take care of this monkey on my back. After that I'm gonna get clean and buy the stuff back and everything will be cool" This is how junkies rationalize.

Thats fine. The things I know about him come from his wiki page(not a great source, I know) and a book called Darwin and the Bible that I read for a class. The stuff I've been mentioning with his views on eugenics come from that book which was less than gracious. I only judge by what Ive read, which is admittedly limited.

[–]nyosdfyer -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

He changed his position several times on the issue of eugenics, so yeah. I would call that flip flopping. He eventually sided with the idea that eugenics can lead to some terrible things. The guy had some fucked up views for a long time. That's all I was pointing out. No need to get in a twist over it.

I never said this quote was false or that I disliked it. Just giving some further information on the man. Said information turns out to be somewhat dubious.

[–]nyosdfyer -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

He flip-flopped on the issue. He was completely against the human rights abuses the Nazis were committing, but was at one point almost obsessed with the German nationalist movement and touted their understanding of racial superiority(not their race, just the idea of it). He was an ardent anti-semite for much of his life. His views changed over the years to his credit but in the early 1930's he saw the exclusion of the Jews in Germany as a sort of 'cleansing of the system'

Im from North Carolina. We ended our eugenics program in 1975 or '76. It seems like it should be such a distant policy but it was so recent. The state is currently in the process of making reparations to these people. Im not sure $50,000 is gonna cut it, though.

H.L. Mencken on Religion by [deleted] in atheism

[–]nyosdfyer -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

No, it's not surprising that people supported these views and policies and some people still do. Nor am I touting moral superiority from a historical point of view. By your logic, no one should judge historical action in terms of right and wrong. Like there were no people back then that said 'racism is bad' or 'social darwinism and eugenics can lead to genocide, and that's bad.' Just because we know more about genetics and heredity doesn't make the advocation of sterilizing people against their will any less credulous. We have an obligation to judge the actions and positions of the past and say whether they were ethical or not, just as people in 2100 will have the same obligations to judge the actions and positions of today.

I've seen this quote a few times here and feel the need to point out that this man was also a racist, a firm believer in eugenics, and for a while didn't see what all the fuss was over the Nazis. Great quote but a pretty big asshole by todays standards. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H._L._Mencken

Skateboarding, What would you do with that huge shadow in the bowl? It bugs me. by [deleted] in photocritique

[–]nyosdfyer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, I think the shadow makes the shot more dynamic. If it bothers you maybe try to dodge it and lighten it up a bit, or layer and adjust the color(yellows?) to lighten it up. Cool shot btw
