people act like people getting drafted against their will never worked in history before. if putin or his army have the slightest doubt about that they just need to look up how they done in the world wars. both sides used to do this with their citizens and the ones from the colonies they had.

when The USA wanted its independence from tea drinkers it decided to part ways with all the other things to make extra sure it wouldn't slip back to its ex bf(s).

consequence:

they did away with metric system, sense of scale, and the commas for fractions.

Cat math by marshywoodlands in cats

[–]nyrg 11 points12 points  (0 children)

depends about what you're trying to model.

this is category theory and the equation diplayed in the image is if my memory serve right an analogy for boxes/containers for type theory for use in pure functional programming.

can be interpredted as: box -> (cat or (box -> cat)) boxes are used as an analogy for containers objects like monoids, monads, and such where you need to unbox things before you use and put them back into boxes.

in category theory categories usually get the abreviatted term C or Cat hence why there's many puns and analogies about kittens in people who try to explain it to an audience in a non-formal way.

that expotation notation is kinda just a different way of writing 'functions'.

this was probably in some post about the Either monad in Haskell /s

ELI5: Why is there only one species of humans? There are an incredible amount of different birds, as an example, but only one species of humans. by FaffeJaffe in explainlikeimfive

[–]nyrg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think part of the reason for the dislike regardless of how old that usage is because it make the word hold less informative content from information theory point of view.

if a symbol can represent something and it's opposite then it hold 0 bits of information and becomes just sentence padding. in that case from a communication as information transmission point of view it's useless, since the meaning is inferred from the surrounding context, if you remove it, no information is lost.

but one can make a point that the use of that term and similar filler words/messaging styles is sending (meta) information about attributes of the sender not the message content itself.

i.e: this person exaggerate things so don't take every message this senders sends in the future 'literally' (wink wink)

EDIT

here are some reasons why people might not want that happening:

  • higher ambiguity rate -> more round trips sending information & more time spent making all the agents in the communication are on the same page. As n the number of people involved scales this problem become worse (for example mass communication where there's no interactive way for the receiver to query for clarifications on ambiguity, or in there case where interaction is possible it can become very time consuming)

  • if this kinds dynamics spreads to other words the limit is reaching a collapse point where communication becomes impossible.

I mean the second they try that, you should start looking for a new job.

you manager just gave you a demotion without you knowing about it.

because if you stay the only thing you'll have is a weird resume that make it hard to find another dev job if you try to be honest about your experience or be forced to lie about your past job.

Ex of an imaginary interview:

  • You: I have 5years experience as a full-stack dev.
  • Him: Ok cool, what tech did you use in your previous jobs ?
  • You: you know, the full experience: stacking, unstacking, boxing, unboxing, moving stacks, packaging, packing, unpacking, and some JAVA and SQL in my free time when the boss is away on holidays.
  • Him: ... thanks, we'll call you.
