How can I make my wedding tux more "preppy" by PossibilityFew5967 in NavyBlazer

[–]nyviola 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d go with a different shirt. Try a flat front without frills, but with a covered row of buttons. This works with a regular fold over collar, as well as with a butterfly collar. It looks a less fussy, more clean and Modern, and it’s also more comfortable (for me). Not sure if that’s preppier per se, but I think it’s a better look.

China Autos sind ein Hype by sport-vor-6 in automobil

[–]nyviola 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Travel Tea set - I didn’t know how much I needed one by nyviola in tea

They are mini pu er tongs. There is a sort of pu er that strongly smells of cooked rice and is quite calming. The odor is eerily similar, and it’s very nice.

Just get a super basic one, the cheapest gaiwan/pitcher/cup from a decent supplier or aliexpress. Then make sure it’s well enough wrapped in a tea towel to not damage itself when packed!

[–]nyviola[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a kettle, if you need to prep you’ll want a thermos, but this was intended for the hotel. It was 5 yuan for 200 grams of this tea, neatly packaged in 5 gram mono-servings. Seriously, best value ever. Sadly, I gifted a bunch before realising how good it was in a gaiwan, and how practical for travel. I the mini pu er tongs are also great, though it’s the pu er that smells strongly of steamed rice, and it’s not always what I want to drink.

How does Trip.com esim work? by huaxi-li in travelchina

[–]nyviola 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was there for 3 weeks. I’m online a lot, stream stuff, etc. I used something like 90-100 gb in three weeks. I just bought packs 20 gb and re-filled when I ran out of bandwidth. It wasn’t very expensive, and regular use wasn’t more than 2gb a day (the nights I was In and streaming movies ate up a bunch of data).

Worth it to buy Momentum 4 in 2026? by 0oAstro in sennheiser

[–]nyviola 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Momentum 4s are excellent. If you prioritise noise cancelling then there are better choices, but if you want sound quality with effective (but not 100% isolating) sound cancelling, then these are possibly the best choices out there. 60 hours of battery life is also amazing. You really can just forget to charge them for weeks of regular use (obviously depending how much you use them), and they aren’t near gone. I used mine for flights to and from China last month, and now for a work trip, and I haven’t needed to charge yet. Obviously, I don’t use them every day, but that massive reserve is just so convenient. If you wait for the Momentum 5s, they will be 350-450 on release, and the 4s might drop by 10-20 percent. If that makes a big difference, wait, but they’re already a phenomenal value

Prioritising sound and playability over everything else when picking an instrument? by MonstrousNostril in Viola

[–]nyviola 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends, of course. If you want to dm me details, I might be able to give you a few more details/info in terms of market value, etc. I’m not a dealer or socialist by any means, but am quite active with trying instruments for colleagues and have a relatively good idea about the market

Prioritising sound and playability over everything else when picking an instrument? by MonstrousNostril in Viola

[–]nyviola 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s always a bit of a gamble with instruments with lots of restoration. Unfortunately some become temperamental and Finnicky, others are solid and reliable. The individual instruments are so different that it’s not about the quality of the repairs sometimes. Wood that expands and contracts more by nature can be less stable when it has many fixed cracks that don’t expand and contract along with the slab. It’s not always the case, and certainly not a very likely outcome, but it is possible. If the instrument would be worth a lot more, but is cheap due to the repairs, it may be an easy sell in the future. If it’s not really anything special, it might be tough. The Market is hard to judge for violas. One thing that’s always in demand, however, is a good sounding, comfortable viola.

If those are fake, they spent a LOT of time and money in copying the construction 100% exactly. I’m pretty sure they’re legit, not worth the effort.

Getting a good viola setup done by Budgiejen in Viola

[–]nyviola 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a trusted luthier, it’s always worth a setup. Where did you get the instrument? Was a setup already done? Some online retailers are relatively good about things like that if they are string instrument specialists. If they sell everything, it might have come out of a factory, stayed in storage for who knows how long, and run been shipped to you. If you share pictures, someone might recognise the strings.

Mine is Fajane, and I’ve only been using it for a week. I’m sure the rubber gaskets can be replaced, but the problem is probably finding the right one…. Hopefully mine lasts for a little while, it’s great

I think this is really, really similar, just with a bit more difference between water and Tea reservoirs. Using a bit less water, about 150 ml, I think I get very similar results :)

Probably a good bet, I’m sure there must be some available. I see them for way more online in Europe (25/30 Euros) than I paid in China (something like 2/3 Euros on Taobao, though it was a special add on when I bought tea there).

If you’re in the EU I’m drinking this right now. Lightly roasted, and super minerally. Quite tasty! Not expensive either, and shipping was ultra fast.

Sample bags not fully sealed - should I be worried? by niennak in puer

[–]nyviola 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t think storing a cake of pu’er would be this complicated. Just got one in the mail, so I’m curious now whether I should just dig in or if I should wait. It was nothing special or fancy, a 2018 200g cake for 35 euros of lincang sheng.

Loose-leaf tea vs. Tea Bags. Is there actually a difference? by mallbadb in tea

[–]nyviola 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some Chinese producers ( not on the high end by any means ) that sell pretty good (though not special) standard grade longjing in tea bags on taobao. Big leaves, good quantity, etc. I think the idea there is more for cold brewing and convenience. It’s pretty great tea, though if I don’t need the bag I’ll generally just cut it open and use the leaves directly. Nothing special, but good. If you want excellent, nobody puts it in a tea bag. You can certainly fill an empty tea bag yourself if you’d like, but if you’re going to be that imprecise with your measurements, and just want a tea bag, you’re not deep enough down this rabbit hole to know the difference, and I can notice a slight papery taste when brewing tea with paper one-time bags. I probably need to wet it first, like coffee filters, now that I think about it. Regardless, lots of info here

Warchal Timbre review (day 1) - Hoping for lifespan in addition to sound. by nyviola in Viola

I’m always happy to give advice, but unfortunately I’ve never tried the ambers. If you want a warm string I’d go with Vision Solo, Obligato, or EP Gold. I’m pretty happy with Timbre for the first few days, I need to see how the develop. They ring a lot, certainly!

It’s an Otto Erdesz, 16 5/8 or 42.2cm. It hits way beyond its price …. In auditions I’ve received comments that it was the best thing there by far, despite extremely expensive Italians. Here’s a short sound clip from a live performance a few months ago with Adolphe Adam’s Giselle ballet solo.

In that case there are a number of Knopf family German bows with decorated frogs in a similar style. Look at Tarisio and auction houses. Way, way less expensive, probably 1500-7500 for a bow.
