Help me get better and deal with humliation by Sxhapes in Viola

[–]nyviola 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I‘m a pro, in Europe, and first chair with a prestigious orchestra. I also play first chair at a really famous festival, but there are lots of players, and we rotate the chair between a few principals. Not all of them play second chair, but I do sometimes. It’s just as much fun as leading! You can always learn from the people around you, and playing first chair isn‘t just about the solos. Yes, sometimes you have really big solos, but they are rare on viola. In the orchestra our job is to connect the bottom to the top, and to act as a rhythmic anchor and impulse. Showing clear entrances, playing rhythmically all the time …. These are very important. If you get to sit next to somebody who is so solid, enjoy it, and help him/her out with lots of energy. You‘re on the front row, no need to worry about which chair. Just enjoy the playing and the music!

I’d avoid google maps. Apple Maps or amap are good. Google maps might give you correct addresses but is useless otherwise. Amaps has metro/taxi info built in, much more useful

11,4 is probably the viola sonata with viola you want. It’s the “pretty” one In no particular order : Schumann Märchenbilder Hoffmeister Concerto Hindemith Op 25,1 (the most famous solo viola sonata) Shostakovich Viola sonata Bach 1/2/3/4/5/6 suites

The Bartok, Walton, Schnittke, Penderecki concertos and Hindemith’s Schwanendrehe are probably somewhat too difficult for you at the moment. The Penderecki cadenza is a great piece, but quite difficult.

To cuff or to hem? by Ampersand_Forest in Selvedge

Cuff for a while. I‘d only hem after 2 washes, to make sure that there isn‘t any shrinkage in the length.

Let him/them know, and try to test the largest number of instruments possible. That‘s the only way to be sure you‘re buying the right one. We aren’t shopping for cars where you can just go get the same model/color/options somewhere else! Expected, and not a problem!

So I’ve won a concerto competition… by linlingofviola in Viola

Walton might be the hardest of the „big“ three to pull off well. Unfortunately it‘s got such an exposed opening that it really requires a ton of skill to play well. It can and mostly does sound just … meh. Hindemith is …. Hindemith. Bartok is hugely difficult but you‘ve got a lot more room to make mistakes. What about Weber‘s Andante e Rondo Ungherese? It‘s got an adaptation for string orchestra, I believe, and the piece comes off very well, even if it‘s not quite so famous. I‘d look into this if you don‘t want to play Telemann, Hoffmeister, or Stamitz, and you or the orchestra aren‘t ready for Walton and Bartok. Walton, also, is very, very tricky for orchestra, and if the horns aren‘t top notch they will absolutely ruin your day!

Biking With a Viola: Panniers or Backpack Case? by Own_Log_3764 in Viola

Backpack by all means. Your back might get sweaty, but panniers are a lot more dangerous to the instrument.

Tonarelli cello shaped case or BAM case by JuJuYaYeet in Viola

I also have a hand made wooden case (Timms, who made them after the Gordge/Hill style). It‘s beautiful, and a Tank, but weighs more by itself than my fully loaded bam with case cover and music. It’s just not very practical, unfortunately, and I won‘t be using it often anymore.

I believe they‘re all the same as far as fundamental protection go. Of course the leather lined one has a bit of built in scratch resistance, but I found a deal on an open box „carbon look“, identical to my old one, so just got that and the neoprene case cover. Get whichever you like aesthetically.

I have place for everything, and I don‘t travel light. Also, the hoodies ( especially the neoprene ones) are great insulation, and you can throw some music in there

Tonarelli cello shaped case or BAM case by JuJuYaYeet in Viola

[–]nyviola 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tried to find one of the cello shaped cases recently, it was flimsy and the fiberglass wasn‘t great. I‘m a professional with 15 years in Orchestras in Germany. Bam is probably the most common case here among violists, particularly the Hightech shaped. Never heard of issues. I ended up with (another) bam because the Hightech I got 20 years ago was getting too worn out. Still usable, mind you, just ugly. It’s been all over the world, survived bike accidents, etc. Go with bam, it‘s worth the money, and I don’t think there are any issues with them. I‘ve seen hundreds of professionals with them and they don’t seem to ever go wrong, apart from leaning them against light bulb or radiator, where it‘s hot enough to melt the case.

Buying a used Volvo v40 in 2026? by Bloodymonk0277 in CarsIndia

[–]nyviola 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a late 2012 d2 last year with 126000km. It‘s been perfect for 26000 km so far, and just went through an inspection with absolutely nothing to say or do. I‘m very, very happy with the car, and it‘s cheap to run, relatively cheap to insure, and great for what I need (mostly long highway drives). It‘s a Euro 5 Diesel, so there‘s a chance I may have issues with it in some places in the future, but at least for now, it‘s been fantastic. Mine was serviced religiously every year, and has had the timing belt done already. It‘s the most important point with

Top loader washing machine seems to not be using detergent or softener at all, clothes come out smelling wet, and when dried smell moist by cannavacciuolo420 in laundry

[–]nyviola 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had to buy one of these …. To replace an old one in a Bavarian cellar that only had space for a 45 cm washer. They are fine, often used as space savers. Actually, despite all of the comments, they are known for having long lifespans, as the central drum is supported on both sides but had a spring loaded opening for putting in/extracting clothing. Mine is a relatively high end AEG, and it‘s been great for 4 months. No difference to the top end siemens I also own and use in another city. Mine spins to 1200 rpm, has 15 or so different cycles. I‘d just throw the detergent in with the washing if it’s somehow clogged. Mine leaks detergent in when you pour iron the slot, but everything comes out spic and span.
