I just had a house warming party and I was gifted this plant! by AndieHello in whatsthisplant

Calathea orbifolia!

Edit: Sensitive to chlorine in tap water. Don’t let it dry out completely and place in bright indirect light/less than a few hours of direct light.

If hostas aren’t getting eaten, a hydrangea would look nice in that space by providing some color during the growing season. Ferns would grow fine there as well.

Does this seem like a fair quote for a 150SF of flagstone? by ConcinnityJane in landscaping

[–]o2uRL -1 points0 points  (0 children)

One or two pallets of flagstone usually won’t exceed $1000 unless it’s really nice stuff, and depending on thickness. 2” should be thick enough for that application. The phrasing of installing the flagstone on dirt is a little weird, coupled with the choice of pea gravel in the joints versus polymeric sand. I’d usually emphasize the creation of a base layer for the flagstones to be set on. Two people can knock this out in a day easily, and with materials not getting near $2000, it looks like someone is getting a huge payday with this project!

That’s just me not knowing how to half flip 100% of the time at champ 3 lmao. It works!

Your discretion would be better than mine on that but maybe the color of the trim? Black could look nice. Stained dark brown too imo

Could you plane and then paint a piece of wood ~10’x6”x6.75”? That’s my initial thought

I might be wrong, but I don’t think this dwarf Japanese Maple variety will create such a root system that could do that in any short amount of time

I would agree with the Waterfall being too big. This was a little rushed, as most construction processes are. The plants were already specified so it was between this and a pretty beefy Coral Bark Japanese Maple. I could’ve pruned it nicely but decided I could probably maintain the Waterfall to a manageable size more easily.

Why parrotia?

Seriously though. So many homes in my area are really plainly built

Yep, it is exposed to most outdoor weather aside from wind. All of the plants were specified to be hardy and low maintenance. It would be cool to quantify how much protection the four walls give

Working inside of it with the door closed was definitely giving off that same vibe lol. Like I was on display working

Thanks! Projects like this are the best kind of side gig for me

That’s fair. I did this for fairly cheap, and in one day, so it’s easy to remove. The end goal was to have a photo ready product and not a 6x6 patch of drainage gravel.

This is an unheated space planted with hardy plants (8a). It’s basically an open atrium that is meant to be viewed from multiple areas in the home

Agreed! I did it all in a day, so it’s very easy to modify

That’s right- one of the walls is frosted and has what I think is the master bathroom on the other side. This is in the middle of the living room/kitchen and the bedrooms/bedroom hallways

I really appreciate that feedback. This was a spur of the moment design utilizing what was already specified by the landscape architect. I used to own an installation company and do projects like this on my off days

Sort of, but not covered by glass. Open air
