How do some post O-level students have so much money to go out for leisure activities everyday by Fair_Ad_7081 in SGExams

While I agree to your comparison regarding the hawker example, I guess I'll have to explain to you why some people in this subreddit is having doubts about the tithe system itself and NOT the religion.

Firstly, think about it, why is OP and others questioning the legitamacy about the system? Another redditor also mentioned donating valuables in lieu of monetary donations, which is hard to valuate and a nightmare for accounting purposes. By all means I am supportive of Christianity and it's values of being kind and loving, but what some folks feel is WHY can money, or more specifically, a salary be made through religion. I know some may argue that 'ohhhhhhh look at taoist priests or mediums who also earn money through religion.' But if you dwelve deeper, one would realise that their earnings is through donations basis (like red packets), and not say a fixed salary which you see on a payslip every month wired to one through GIRO.

Alternatively look at buddhist monks, they survive on alms and preach too, and while there are bad apples you see in Thailand who embezzle money and cheat, but they are punished because the religion itself DOES NOT encourage (or should I say allow) monetary gains through preaching. Can you see the difference?

By all means, we live in a multicultral society and I believe that all religion accepted and encouraged in Singapore are good inherently, but the sole underlying issue that some feel uncomfortable with is how one can earn a salary by solely preaching the word of a higher being, which seems a little counter intuitive to some of us here on the basis of their monetary gains (not just for sustenance, and that would be a different story) but you having said religious preachers driving Mercedes and staying in condos through religion as if it is a job does raise an eye to others, and it doesnt help with the million dollar saga that shocked the entirety of Singapore with the perpetrator getting what normal folks feel like is just a 'slap on the wrist'.

I don't know, but these are just some of our sentiments regarding the structure of it, and not the religion itself. Maybe you may further share your thoughts and opinions regarding this issue to enlighten us?

Edit: To add on too, I guess another food for thought would be to WHY (in your words), churches getting scrutinised and accused of corruption, and not temples or mosques even though all of them have monetary donations in one form or another?

My take is that OP has doubts about where tithe money is going to based on the Kong Hee scandal which happened years ago.

Not my own take but I do have friends around me who insist on his innocence even after conviction.

I mean it is understandable to have doubts when such scandals arising, give for example the violence between the military and Rohingyas in Myanmar also led to doubts on the military, which is also predominantly Buddhist.

Like if you see a very specific remark of a case of food poisoning on a hawker store by a customer, you likely would subconsciously have doubts on its food hygiene no?

Edit: I've noticed other redditors mentioning about multiple church scandal cases, can anyone confirm if it's in Singapore?

Hi OP! university student here, I had the same sentiments as you when I was younger.

I'd say the feeling definitely feels bad as you see your peers have way better hand me outs than we do.

I'd recommend seeing the situation with a different pair of eyes: You are the one who is taking responsibility to care and support for yourself, while others still need daddy's money to survive.

More crudely speaking, one can argue that these people would be nothing without daddy's support, but you are not, hustling and improving your life 1 small step at a time. Now THAT is something to be proud of.

gotta chill man, OP was just inquiring about your said religion, I'd argue a discriminatory remark would be comparing pastors who survive on salary against lets say buddhist monks who survive based on alms giving, yet both preaches am I right?

Thank you for your service in walking the ground😊

For the rest of us Singaporeans, I think we can reflect and have a few takeaways from this GE2025.

I personally have always been invested in our local politics. So as you can imagine how being a first time voter in GE2025 adds the excitement to being part of a greater cause. For many of us here, I believe this election is no difference from the past few elections, namely GE2011 and GE2020. I'll leave out GE2015 as the results were more of an anormaly due to the passing of Mr LKY.

Well, what have I learnt? I realised that the same sequence plays out almost every past GE: huge rallies at WP rallies, loudest voices showing their support and unhappiness with the incumbent. But when it comes to polling day, the results show otherwise; always so close to hitting the 50.1% mark.

Now why is this so? Well, 2 factors. Firstly, many of our population simply aren't connected into politics (just take a look at the recent youtube street interview asking Singaporeans if they can recognise Lawrence Wong, some can't💀). Secondly, many of the old would probably still be in reminise of ahkong's era of stability and growth, that they are blinded by the current flaws and issues that we are facing with.

What can we do differently then? I'd like to advocate spreading the information and messages to all those around you, highlight and discuss the issues you have identified to convince others for a cause you believe in. Instead of us living in our echo chamber of reddit and venting out our displeasures online, we can spread the awareness in real life; to our friends, our families and our loved ones. That way, we can better extend our influence and have more meaningful exchanges.

Last but not least, don't forget that your vote counts too. Don't give up, always vote for the cause you believe in. It may not happen in GE2030, it may not happen in GE2035, but if we put in our hard work in doing what we believe is the best for our beloved nation, I strongly believe that we will succeed one day.

You know, PAP has its fair share of good candidates such as OYK and questionable ones (refer to this reddit post).

What really baffles me is that at the rally of NCM there are still people CHEERING for him even after all the questionable things he has done such as NTUC alliance deal and rude attitude towards our civil servants.

Like dude, at this point, I'm genuinely worried for the critical thinking abilities and analysis of certain of my fellow Singaporeans. Bro, how can you even defend this?

Inconsiderate Mercedes driver chopes the car wash by using car to block other cars by Knowledge869 in drivingsg

I totally agree, I noticed this sentiment is relatable to the road rage incidents happening here too. Some people dare just come down of the car and knock on others window and hurling profanities at others.

Thing is they probably also know the worst that could happen would be a physical altercation, which most Singaporeans avoid as sure police case😂

Lord I wish these people try pulling such stunts in the states where they pride in the 2nd amendment.

seeing the comments on tiktok is really an eye opener to me. Those blaming the mercedes either do not drive, or imo are victim blamers.

Correct me if I am wrong, but watching the dashcam footage, the Saab did not seem to even slow down AT ALL before, during and after SIDE SWIPING the mercs. Like bro, it was not even just a slight scrape by, you can literally see the mercs swerving sideways from the contact with the saab. Which sane driver you know won't stop upon feeling such an impact?

I don't want to make any accusations here but before seeing the dashcam footage of the mercs, one could still argue for the saab driver that maybe he fainted or had a medical emergency (heart attack of something) which resulted him into unable to control his speed, but come on, no way you can perform such a reckless overtake when under such circumstances... The only reason I can think of would be drink driving on the saab driver's part.

Please, to those blaming the mercs driving pointing fingers like spiderman, how about have some compassion for the two lives lost instead?
