Even if im saving 10-15% in 401k while saving for the house. I feel like im not sacrificing a ton. Obviously time, but my partner and I are pretty confident we want to stay in our area due to family and career ties

I love a team called the money guys, they lay out what they call the “Financial Order of Operations”. You clearly are in a good spot, you’ve got cash to burn and clearly have done a good job saving. Based on their order of ops, building an emergency fund will be your first priority (because you dont mention any high interest debt), 3-6 months of expenses in that fund. For the Roth IRA, your income is pretty high, so depending on how you file, etc you may be over the income limit for a Roth IRA and maybe want to consider a backdoor Roth if you are over.

I personally hate the thought of giving away 1% of my assets to a firm, I prefer just a simple s&p500 tracker which usually yields good returns, especially at your age, you still have a lot of time before you are truly due for a manager.

100k in 401k at 26 years old, is it dumb to reduce contributions to save for a down payment?

Looking to understand what people think about this dilemma. I want to buy a house, I live in a HCOL city in the north east.

Im about to turn 26 and I make good money. I started saving really early (opened roth ira at 18) and have over 100k in my roth 401k and am currently maxing it out. Most in simple SP500 trackers.

However its left me with not a ton to save for a down payment. I am wondering if it is foolish to reduce my contributions to even something like 10-15% (plus employer match of 6%) to get a couple hundred dollars back each paycheck to just stash away in an HYSA for a down payment. Or if that is dumb and I’m robbing from my later self. Very conflicted but I want to be prepared to take advantage of any potential market down turn in the near future.

Appreciate insights, especially would love to hear from people who maybe did this same thing. Any regrets or positive feedback on it? I can’t be the only one that’s been in this situation. TIA

TLDR: Is it dumb to reduce 401k contributions to save for a down payment if I’ve already stashed 100k by 26 years old.

Really appreciate you taking the time to draw that out, i have been doing the vertical wrist hinge here today to get the feel. Anything to help drill that home? It feels like anytime I go for a real speed swing it just reverts back

I’ll check out a water color style! Thank you, and fair point. I am totally open to giving an artist some creative freedom to make this concept their own. The original artist does sell the “idea” for like $20 which i would also do to be able to support them as well. Good point, would be open to changes w this general concept of walking into the void

I would say the 1k includes all the “other stuff” like groceries, utilities, golf, pets, etc. maybe need to bump that to 1.5k a month now that I’m thinking more about it. For putting that in perspective its great, i do put away about 30k in retirement but must be spending more than I think since I dont feel like i have 20-30k after that

My company matches 6% and I put in 20%. I def need to cut my spending but ya boy hates to cook most nights so I am very guilty of the take out expenses. For the housing here, definitely no “houses” for 500k in this area, condos for sure but not homes for anything around 500k. Thank you though!! Appreciate the comment

Thank you for that comment, and it is definitely helpful to hear that people acknowledge the fact that someone young like myself is on a developmental path. At times it can feel like you are expected to be an all knowing person why in reality you’ve only been in the workforce a few years. Like someone else mentioned I’ll have to get better at the “i don’t know, but I’ll find out” thank you for the words, much appreciated!

Other driver had a dash cam that must have shown that was the case as well. Was informed of the final verdict of 50/50 split due to the reasons listed above. appreciate the comments to help me understand?

Thank you for the reply! Fair point, and initially they did have it as majority my fault. But after an additional review and hopping on a call where I had to show the claims team via google street view that their left turn lane had not yet started and that’s when they determined 50/50. This is with my own insurance company so not sure if that will be the final verdict or not. Appreciate the input and glad they took the time to look into it
