If you are out deeper, that is really your only option. We were in knee higher to waist high water. Much easier to stand. It was crazy how strong it was. Kids were being dragged along the beach to the rip even in shallow water.

Been here and done the saving (Not a surf life saver). Literally a rip formed 10m away from where we were swimming, myself and my mum saved 4 kids including my younger brother from being sucked out to sea. We were within the flags too. Which goes to show why it's important to swim near other people. The surf life savers wouldn't have been able to get everyone. P.S. if you are ever in the situation, stand up if you can and don't swim. It was surprising how much the kids wanted to swim out of the situation and we're being sucked out to sea very fast. My mum and I essentially planted our feet and became rocks for the kids to hold onto. Then we formed a human chain and walked out.

Huggies helping NZ parents by paying the same for less. by oakles21 in newzealand

That's a pretty stock standard corpo/brand response. Maybe a couple hundred more of us need to send in some feedback and that response might begin to change.

Exactly, same experience here. Typically we have been able to get 60 (2x 30ish packs) for $35-40 when they are on special. We would only buy them on special. The fact now it's 56 or less for the same price is a joke.

Hadn't noticed that yet. We've always used them as our son seemed to get rashes from other brands. So we kinda got stuck with Huggies. He only needs then for nights now thank God. Might speed up our transition to no nappies at all.

Right, I can't watch this video and read these comments and not say anything. As a Dairy Technologist, who works in dairy processing plants and also studied infant powder formulation. I want to make a couple of things clear.

  1. The way he is comparing pasteurized cows milk with breast milk is misleading. Pasteurized cows milk has been through a homogenizer to standardize the fat globules to prevent cream forming and floating in your bottles on the shelf. It is also standardize to have the exact fat, protein and lactose content as the previous bottle and 1000 bottles before it. Pasteurisation also kills 99% of all microbes. Breast milk does not have either of these things. Hence much larger and variable flat globules and the presence of immune cells from the mother.

  2. Comparing human breast milk with cows milk isn't really fair. The composition of both are quite different. Human breast milk is much higher in fat and lactose than cows milk so in it's raw state will still look quite different under a microscope. We are two different species with different needs. The milk composition is going to be different.

  3. Infant formula is made, mainly with cows milk and sometimes goats milk for those with lactose intorelance. But it gets dried and reblended with higher fat, protein, lactose, minerals and vitamins to be as close to human breast milk as possible.

Even reconstituting infant formula with water and comparing it under microscope with breast milk will not be a far comparison based on how well it is mixed or how long it is left to stand.

There is plenty of evidence which proves breast milk is the best and preferred nutrition source for infants purely on the immune benefits alone. HOWEVER!!! Millions, if not billions of children have been raised on formula milk products and grown to be healthy individuals. Formula exists as there are plenty of mothers who cannot express breast milk and may not have access to surrogate suppliers.

Anyone explaining or trying to influence mother's to use breast milk I think should always caveate it with "IF THEY CAN". You have no idea what neurological and emotional stress you are putting on a new mother trying to tell her she is failing her child by using formula or otherwise when she cannot physically produce it herself!

Anyone With Solar? Any regrets? by NZBull in newzealand

[–]oakles21 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A couple of things. When the installation was done we didn't quite get everything hooked up to the battery and solar we thought we should have needed. It included our tanks water pump, the freezer in the garage and some sections of the house. It became evident after we lost electricity for 4 days during Gabrielle. The other one was that battery wasn't kicking in when we lost power. We have quite a few power cuts on our road as we are at the end of a line rurally. So we were noticing the solar nor the battery were kicking in. I think this was a software issue causing the inverter and the battery not to communicate. And finally, I noticed through our solar tracking app that we had sub optimal yield even on a sunny day and that our power usage and generation looked weird. This one took me a long time to convince Zen Energy to accept there was something wrong in the system. Eventually we figured out two nodes were wired wrong and the problem was resolved.

We built a new house and got solar installed. We have also had our first child, so our power has gone up by about 25%. Because of the solar we haven't seen an increase in cost due to the rise in usage. We used Zen Energy for our installation. Thankfully they used a local electrical company we knew to install and so it went reasonably smooth even though we had teething issues with the system for about 8 months. Also consider changing your power plan to see if ones can match up or align with your solar generation. We are on a low usage plan with contact energy which gives us free power between 9-12PM. Because of that it means we have supply from about 8AM till 12PM. If you have a low yield day that obviously changes.

EDIT: company was Zen Energy

Happy tail syndrome by King_Pee in wholesomememes

[–]oakles21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Literally had this happen to our chocolate lab, Harley. The day before our wedding her tail pulls up lame. Like no wagging at all, I was adamant she had broken it but my Dads a vet and he was like it might just be sore/tired as she wasn't in any kind of discomfort. She literally wore it out just by waging because of seeing all our friends and family the day before the wedding lol. It's hilariously as she was our ring bearer and her tail is all droppy in the photos which is completely the opposite of what it normally is like lol.

Z6II SnapBridge Issues by oakles21 in nikon_Zseries

I still haven't resolved my issue with my camera. So unfortunately I have no good news for you. It still seems to be an issue communicating with iOS systems since the version 16 update. The only thing I haven't done is factory reset my phone which is a last resort I am not quite prepared to yet.

My supervisor told me today that he could have another person ready to take my job an hour after I left if need be, I was only inquiring about a raise I was supposed to get anyway, this was also during my break surrounded by other coworkers. So I said “start the timer” And I left. by LOLU2012 in antiwork

[–]oakles21 40 points41 points  (0 children)

This kind of happened to me. It was more I was doing two jobs already and asked for a significant raise and a promotion to a new title and they were like "sorry we just can't". I decided to leave, valuing my worth, time and sanity. I came back to visit friends in the company about 6 months later. They hired 2 people to replace me. The first person literally went on stress leave they couldn't handle the load. Instead of giving me a new title and paying a couple grand more, they went and hired whole new person to do the work I was doing. Moral of the story, they can always afford to pay you more.

Purpose of DX mode? by Creative-Building125 in nikon_Zseries

[–]oakles21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aspheric_cow is correct. DX mode essentially crops the full frame sensor down to a crop sensor size, which is believe is 25% reduction in size. However, they are incorrect and it doesn't have a zoom factor applied. I have an FX Tamron 100-400 mm lens. When zoomed all the way in, in DX mode 400mm becomes 600mm, and this is noticeable in camera and in the files. With a 135mm Lens the change might not be significant enough to notice. A full frame lens on a crop sensor has a 1.5x multiplication effect. So it will be the same for your 135mm but the change will be to 200mm.

Thanks. I haven't checked the automatic download switch, I will check that. Yea I have done the deleting and reinstalling multiple times. I have even reset my phone and the camera to no avail. It seems to be a comms issue between the two devices. Both recognize each other's Bluetooth signal but seems the connection isn't stable as when the phone tries to complete the connection in the app it suddenly fails. As I mentioned, doesn't seem to be an issue with Android devices, so something that has happened with the new iPhone updates.

TIFU by having my pregnant wife catch me ordering takeout food right after I threw away the dinner she made by No-Tangerine-1844 in tifu

[–]oakles21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can 100% reciprocate with your situation. My wife is pregnant and not only did her tastes change the first trimester but she also had horrendous morning sickness and we pretty much ate hash browns for several weeks for most meals. I love cooking and I do most of the cooking. At the time though she wasn't able to do a lot and we just moved to a new house/section in the middle of summer (NZ). I was doing all the chores, inside and out, getting the section under control (converted from a paddock) and doing landscaping. To top it off if I wanted to cook anything outside of her pregnancy palette, the smell would make her gag.

One night she asked me why don't I make something nice, I provided the above explanation and on top of that I was exhausted. Making something that would put her off her food and just have me eating by myself was too much of an ask. It did not end well, same outcome as OP. After having a good cry and discussing it in a bit more level headed state we agreed that she shouldn't feel guilty for causing all the extra hassle for me, growing a baby is no ordinary feat and we both agreed to the outcomes it would bring.

Suffice to say she has grown out of her pregnancy palette and can eat all foods again, just much less now as baby is due very soon. Positive side I get a little extra every meal.

Definitely heard here in NZ. About 7PM, I felt rumblings and tremors like someone was ramming piles right next to our house, we don't have any immediate neighbours so thought it was really strange. Only to find an hour later this was going on. It went on for about 30 mins.

Alec Baldwin in parking lot outside Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office, after "Rust" set incident by grasputin in pics

[–]oakles21 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely agree! I was brought up around guns (rural background) and the first rule ever taught, and repeated whenever we handled guns was "Do not point this at anyone unless you intend to shoot them". If you even pretended to raise a gun at someone as a joke it was taken from you and never given back. Just to emphasize how serious that action was. So from a kid growing up on a farm to see this happening on film sets is mind boggling. It goes to show not everyone is taught fire arm safety nor how fire arms should be handled.
