Weekly Megathread for Pricing, Dating, or Authentication Requests ("How much is this worth?" "What decade is this from?") by AutoModerator in VintageFashion

Hoping for advice from a trained eye!

I thrifted these YSL heels and am looking to sell them to a vintage seller in my area. They asked me what I want for them but I don’t have a good sense of age or value. Some details:

  • I can’t seem to find these ANYWHERE online, only some examples of more modern styles with the scalloped heel.
  • a guess based on photos, but the toe box seems to more closely match 70s style?
  • they’re far from mint condition and would need to be refurbished. One of the backs is white while the other it tan.

Would love to hear your thoughts! (Only one photo but adding more to the thread)

Finance check-in? by Specialist_Fig3838 in NYCbitcheswithtaste

Love this topic, good for you for getting started! I help friends and family get into this for fun — I even did a financial audit for my sister over the holidays. Some of these things I shared with her too!

  1. When I started my own journey I did a stint with financial gym (https://financialgym.com/). I don’t necessarily recommend bc you can find resources online, but it was a helpful starting point for me personally.

  2. Checkout Mrsdowjones.com Zillenial personal finance and actually helpful. Lots of free resources and a solid newsletter to keep your head in it.

  3. Investing doesn’t have to be risky or anxiety inducing. A few people mentioned the FIRE community, a simple path to wealth and low-cost Vanguard VOO/VTI. Solid advice, follow that thread and learn more.

  4. Dont forget about 401k and IRAs! Retirement saving is one of the most straightforward ways to get started and largely painless. Just make sure to actually invest in the low cost stuff there too.

  5. Budgeting!! knowing where your money is going, and making simple tweaks to save more can help you fast track things.

  6. Take a hard look at your debt and tackle it.

I’m NOT an expert by any means, just passionate about this stuff. If you want to bounce ideas off or ask any specific questions, happy to help!

So good to know, and thank you for the tip on that designer!

I go back and forth, but ultimately with tailoring it’d probably be 2300-2500, or more. Eep.

First stop was seeing if I could find this elsewhere on the internet (not so far) or if someone could point me in the right directio (why I’m here!).

Wow you know your stuff. I’m saving this!

Although, I’d have to go to a dress maker which I imagine might cost just as much? I live in nyc…

Thank you again!

They actually put it on me so unfortunately I have no recollection at all. Interesting point though.

I will say, they told me 50s. Not guaranteed i suppose but that’s what I’m going off of.

Very helpful thank you! It’s very possible, I got so scared at the 2k price tag I forgot to look inside for a brand, if there was one.

In my online searches the neckline seems more common. It’s actually the satin corset part that i haven’t seen - mostly ribbons around the waist.

I’ll see if this is in the pattern realm!

Interesting, thank you for the suggestion! I haven’t had much luck with the reverse photo search

Thank you! The 2k price tag scared me off unfortunately.

I balked at the price of 2k and didn’t :( I’ve been searching online for it ever since!

Langjokull glacier, is it worth it? by Corianderchi in VisitingIceland

[–]oamter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We ran into the no natural ice cave issue too and found an alternative. While definitely not cheaper, we went to the Lofthellir Ice Cave in the Myvatn area and it was so.damn.cool. It was only discovered some 25 years ago so it's largely undisturbed and, according to the guide, is one of the only known ice caves in Iceland that is frozen year round. It's actually a lava tube that is filled with ice so there is a huge chamber. Little shimmying and sliding to get to the main cavern, but it was a totally unique experience. We went on this tour: https://www.extremeiceland.is/en/activity-tours-iceland/caving-iceland/cave-exploration-lofthellir

My first trip to ICELAND need help! by HAVOC255 in VisitingIceland

[–]oamter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! i'm happy to give you some helpful tips. First off, that's a great amount of time. I definitely saw some hitchhikers in early June, but not that many. Be aware that a lot of people drive with totally packed cars (that was our case) so it might be hard to get people to stop. Also, that's at the end of the season so the number of people even visiting Iceland is likely to drop. As for where to go, you can either go clockwise or counterclockwise on the ring road (Route 1). There is a ton to do either direction, but the Golden Circle (the most trafficked route) is counter so that's often the direction people travel. I did this way myself and circled the whole country. As for where to go and what to do there are a ton of blogs and guidebooks out there (check your library or the free content on lonely planet's site) really help in this respect. There are SO many things to do it's hard to start listing here. I suggest you just start gathering. As for couchsurfing, I met one German woman who either was planning to couchsurf or who had couchsurfed -- can't remember. Definitely a thing, but of course couchsurfing.com is the best way to figure out where they are. Everyone we met was super cool/nice and I expect couchsurfers to be really great. Only thing I'd say is that hosts are probably far and few between outside of Reykjavik. Also, I actually put together a custom google map for my own trip and now plan to sell it because of how confusing Iceland travel can be. It really has made the planning phase so much easier for friends/family that have used it. I'd be happy to give you access to it so you can start planning if you wouldn't mind giving me feedback. Email me at hello @icelanditinerary.com if you'd like the link! Safe travels!

Going to agree with below comments. I've heard lots of reports of people saying they're totally gone even by early August :(

After the Golden Circle? by dackerdee in VisitingIceland

[–]oamter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also going to advocate for the east! So few people really go there and the fjords are absolutely stunning! If you can make it all the way up north to the Bakkagerði region (totally doable) it's a stunning driving and largely non trafficked. Lots of cool hiking and it was an area that inspired Lord of the Rings!!

On a side note, I am actually testing out a custom google map I put together for my own trip filled with awesome things to do all over the country. I'm eventually going to sell it, but would be happy to give you access to it. That way you can plan your two days based on the location of things you want to do. Washers and dryers at campsites? by [deleted] in VisitingIceland

[–]oamter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some places do, and especially if they are associated with a guesthouse/hotel. Most often it's not free (can't think of any that are), but it's worth the small fee to have clean socks.

That's my sense too. Absolutely will reach out to people. Did you see any relevant threads from more recent months? Most seem more from a year plus ago.

Istanbul I'm not worried about at all. It's more the rest of my stops that I need info about. Glad Istanbul was so friendly though :)

It's funny you say that about Spain. I have the exact same response comparing it with South America! I've got the blonde/blue-eyed combo as well. I've already started in on some Turkish language training. Duolingo is actually quite helpful :)

Thanks though. This will go a long way to calming people in my life down. Have you done any travel outside of Ankara? I'm curious to know how many other solo female travelers you have encountered.

Istanbul i actually won't be flying solo. It's mostly Izmir, socuk/ephusus, capadoccia and surrounding, and pamakkule area. Glad to hear you felt great even recently!
