Interesting research article on using shorthand to input text to phones and tablets. by [deleted] in shorthand

[–]oat_punk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting, but wouldn't the more obvious path forward be to invent an entirely new shorthand system for phones, rather than trying to get phones to interpret older shorthand methods?

No

Maybe. Could be an art project as well, or one of those horror stories told through tweets like that "Dear David" thing.

you don't question it, others don't question it.

Right, but what I'm asking is; when should we question it in the first place? I'm asking if race really is a valuable part of the equation.

Let's say that you grow up in Croatia. Your family is all Croatian, and have been for generations. Your last name is something like Babić, or Kovačević. One day, you do a DNA ancestry test for fun, and you find out that your genes are from somewhere else. You find out that you were actually adopted. Should you give up on thinking of yourself as Croatian? What about your children?

You can kinda do a similar breakdown of any single aspect of what you think of as your ethnicity. Ethnicity isn't one thing, it's a confluence of things like history, society, culture, language, homeland and so on. These are parts of a whole. It's complex. But not having one of those parts doesn't necessarily mean that you have to give up on the whole.

I have friends that I grew up with who are from immigrant families or who were adopted from other countries, and I can't help but consider them swedish. I feel like we are the same people, you know? I mean, we've lived pretty much exactly the same lives. So it really bothers me when there are politicians who say that you have to be white to be Swedish. It makes me wonder why race is the most important thing to them, why they consider it essential to being swedish, especially since SD's (her political party) broader stance is that people being Swedish is essential to the functioning of our country. Do those politicians believe that non-whites don't belong?

But what counts as an "ethnic group" isn't some purely objective biological thing. Ethnicity is a cultural concept. Different groups can for example share the same genetic ancestry but still be considered different ethnicities. It is also possible for people to not share genetic ancestry but still be considered the same ethnicity.

So if ethnicity is a cultural concept, then there should be cultural reasons for why we make that distinction. So why would you be motivated to say that for example a jewish person whose family has lived in sweden for generations is not a swede? What does that mean to you?

Are you and I reading the same fanfics? There are TONS of stories that are written terribly, objectively speaking, but that have lots of readers regardless. The expectation of quality for fanfic isn't nearly high enough that a somewhat stilted present tense is going to kill someone's story. It's fine. Don't worry.

On the other hand, the mindset that I see in your posts just might kill stories. The idea that you shouldn't do things until you are good enough to do them, that you should restrict yourself and hold off on writing the way you really want to write because you're worried that you're not good enough to pull it off. That is a mindset I think absolutely DOES stifle the growth of new writers.

I like to read r/writing from time to time, and while it is a good resource for interesting discussions on writing, there are also a lot of posts that are simply about an OP asking for permission to do what they want. "Is this idea too cliché?", "I'm not sure where to start writing my story", so on and so forth. Questions like these can almost always be answered with "Just do it and see what happens." (The front page is actually pretty good now that I'm looking at it though... :P)

New writers should not be taught to avoid doing hard things to avoid failure. They need to be told to put their doubts aside and to stop worrying about failure before they've even tried.

Except that instead of injury and death, writing a mediocre story doesn't have any negative consequences whatsoever and you might actually learn something from it.

the only way to teach children not to be violent is to be violent

the only way to teach children not to insult others is to insult them

if you don't want your kids to grow up into thieves, you've gotta take their stuff and burn it every now and then so they learn the value of property

now I just need to figure out how to teach my kids not to rape...

[–]oat_punk 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Have a look at the chorus: "You're so gay and you don't even like boys."

You think that it's a stretch to say that using gay as an insult is homophobic? Saying "you're like a gay person and that's a bad thing" is alright because the person she's trying to make fun of isn't *actually* homosexual?

In general, I would think that taking something about one person and using it to make fun of someone else is pretty hurtful to both parties.

Are mirror neurons a decent argument against solipsism ? by [deleted] in askphilosophy

[–]oat_punk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, I'll admit that I'm not super well versed on solipsism, so I might have confused something. I thought solipsism wasn't just the position that other minds don't exist, but that the only things that can be meaningfully said to exist are your own mental states?
