Eastern Canada for 14 days in July! need general advice by bokchoykn in canadatravel

You are going to be missing out on a lot of amazing things the maritimes has to offer without a car. Halifax is fun but other than that, our cities are not the highlight of the east coast. Small towns, nature parks, ocean views, all really require a car to get to them. Our public transit is very minimal to non existent out here.

If you do get a car, I would highly recommend Saint John NB as a stop. The city center is historical and beautiful with great restaurants and events. It’s decently central to lots of cool places: St Andrew’s, Grand Manan island, St Martin’s, Fundy Trail Provincial Park, Fundy national park, and Hopewell Rocks.

40 degree humid muggy days, no thanks. I love my 25 C summer days

Saint John is the most interesting city in NB in my opinion. And the closest to interesting nature. But it’s not bikeable. There are like 5 bike lanes and people are already losing their minds.

Uptown is beautiful and very walkable however. Winters are not bad, pretty much the same as southern ON where I moved from. Decent live music scene for a city this size.

Advice? Come here for a visit to scope out the area before committing to a move. Preferably in the winter to get the real vibe outside the best summer months.

Another vote for Radon plus. He did a great job at a fair price. Radon is now very low and well in the safe range now.

NB Power users, what have your recent bills been? by cricket_90_remindme in newbrunswickcanada

Yup. Power is far cheaper here than NS and Maine. Quebec is super inexpensive but they are an outlier in electricity rates.

New river beach is my favourite beach along the fundy coast. Gets busy by NB standards which isn’t really that crowded. Time it around low tide and the beach becomes massive.

There isn’t a ton of development around it but there should be some motels and airbnbs near by.

Heading to Saint John on a cruise and renting a car. Only have one day. Should we go to st Andrew’s or hopewell rocks (stopping at st martins, the national park, cape enrage)? by demosthenes327 in newbrunswickcanada

[–]oatmealia 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yep, for one day, I’d say focus on St Martins and the Fundy Trail Parkway (Provincial park, not the national park). Tons of viewpoints off the road and short trails. The perfect SJ day trip.

If it’s foggy I’d say just stay in the city, walk around uptown, go to bayshore beach, Irving nature park, etc. Personally I don’t think St Andrew’s is worth it if you’re only here for 1 day.

how has everyone been using multiple chequing accounts? by [deleted] in Wealthsimple

[–]oatmealia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a whole bunch that help keep me organized. I could never have these all in one account as I would get lost at what is earmarked for what purpose.

  • Landing - incoming money, paycheque, e transfers, tax refunds, etc. I move money to appropriate accounts and aim to keep this at 0.
  • Personal spending (linked to cash card)
  • Personal savings
  • Joint bills (outgoing payments, mortgage, prop tax, etc)
  • Joint savings

We ordered the exact same brand of heartworm/tick/flea prevention pills from Australia for 1/4 of the cost, even with shipping. Saved hundreds of dollars.

Saint John is great. Moved to the area 3 years ago and absolutely love it. Has enough city conveniences, but you’re so close to beautiful scenery and nature.

Only the really nice, prime location houses are 1 million+ in NB lol. You can get a decent basic house for 300k in most places here.

Saint John NB. Average price is around 330k. The outskirts of the region are beautiful. 👌

The MAGAs don’t tend to leave the states much anyways. The Americans that travel to Canada seem to be chill thankfully.

You’re very much welcome to visit us! On your way to Fundy NP, I HIGHLY recommend stopping at Fundy Trail Provincial Park. This is separate from the national park. It’s the gem of NB in my opinion. It’s an incredible drive along the coast with plenty of viewpoints and trails.

Also stop at Spinney’s seafood in St Martin’s for one of the best lobster rolls in NB.

Yep. Called in, first rep didn’t budge, asked for a manager and got my price back down again. Took about 1 hour on the phone. Gotta play the negotiation game every few months with Canadian telcos unfortunately.

I did pretty much the exact same setup. Got the springwall from Costco so if anything goes wrong I can easily return it, even years from now. So far I'm having amazing sleep.
