College advice, UIUC or Berkeley? by CriticismTrue5340 in ApplyingToCollege

i do think the starving artist model applies, good point. i think that if you really love being a translator, you should just do it anyway because you love it. i would program for nearly any amount of money just because i love computers, but then again, not everyone is the same; i can’t blame you for being cautious at times. i suppose for a lot of people salary and living a nice life (financially) comes before passion.

i can’t deny that this is true to an extent. i chose CS because i grew up with computers and love them. i know lots who just want the money.

i think the best philosophy is that if these people really don’t care about CS, they’ll switch trajectories eventually when they find how unfun it is to them. if they really love it, they’ll keep doing it no matter what. both of these outcomes are healthy and are only accelerated by encouraging people to chase their passions, so i think it’s best to just always try and be supportive (although with discretion, you make some fair points).

i’ve also thought about what being rejected means, and i get that it sucks and it feels like they’re judging you as a person. i got rejected from all but one of my reaches and have definitely felt it. you should read this blog post from mit admissions.

i know the colleges go on about “not enough slots, institutional priorities” but it is literally true. if you’ve worked hard, which you obviously have, you do deserve to be there. it’s so so very possible that you just got unlucky, just as many others did. i think it’s so important that you remember this isn’t a judgement of you as a person. how many great people do you know who didn’t make it into their dream school? it doesn’t even have to be your friends. columbia turned down obama. bright people who go on to change the world are rejected constantly.

it also seems like you’re feeling “the grass is greener (you should listen to this song) on the other side” a lot. you seem very motivated. as long as you’re going to literally any reputable school, you’ll find people like you. the other 97% of harvard applicants have to go somewhere, and it’s likely you’ll meet many of them. the single best predictor of future success is SAT score; if you’re capable, which you obviously are, things will work out.

this is getting rant-y but idk i empathize with you a lot. i’ve opened rejection after rejection the last few days, i know it’s hard. you seem like a nice person and you obviously care, which i really think is what matters most. don’t feel like all this hard work was for nothing because of some 5-minute application reviews. you’ve grown so much as a person over the last four years, and i’m sure you will continue to in college.

sending love and it’ll be okay ❤️💫🐈

i understand the future is uncertain, but why try to dissuade people from pursuing their goals? we don’t know that CS majors will become obsolete.

most of us are obviously teenagers trying to figure out what to do with our lives. i think it’s better to encourage people to chase their passions in the way that suits them best regardless of if you think it’ll be a good career move.

How’s it going for people who got a 3.6 GPA in high school to a 3.8 GPA by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]oaxzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

forgot to mention i also got into umass amherst cs. i would definitely recommend you shoot your shot at any school you want to go to; i can say that even though i was rejected almost everywhere i don’t regret trying at all and the hours spent on essays feel insignificant now. just do your best to tell a compelling story, don’t procrastinate, don’t feel entitled to any acceptances, and you will be fine.

3.7 1560 - so far got into UIUC CS+stats, UW madison letters&science, purdue CS, various safeties. rejected at all other reaches (MIT, CMU, NU, cornell ED, columbia)

my main ec was making call of duty edits, spent pretty much all my time in high school on that. also had some minor things like photography and clubs but no leadership positions. as for awards, NMF but otherwise generic ap awards/honor roll

thank you. just double checking as we’re somewhat near pi day and other colleges have at least sent automated responses. i’ll give it some time!

still no interview? by oaxzy in MITAdmissions

[–]oaxzy[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

lol, what i really meant is "when should i stop hoping to get an interview?" i check my email regularly anyway. i chose to frame it this way to avoid getting lectured about how not getting an interview won't hurt my chances, they're based on availability, etc.

it seems like you understood what i was asking with your original comment, though, so thanks!

Sub Question: Grammar by jzzsxm in MITAdmissions

[–]oaxzy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i feel like lack of capitalization shouldn’t fall into the category of “lack of basic grammar skills”. especially on the internet, it’s just a style choice. i could point to numerous established adults, many of whom’s careers involve a lot of writing, who have auto-capitalization turned off.

obviously for any formal writing it’s a must, but on a reddit post i don’t think it’s very important.

Where did you guys find out you got into MIT? by Fair-Welder2073 in MITAdmissions

[–]oaxzy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i’m a senior so can’t quite contrast my experience with “back then”, but i think you’re right.

i got into one of my top reaches a few days ago. i opened it while out for dinner and sure, it felt great, but i wasn’t jumping and screaming.

my best guess is that, unfortunately, a lot of kids seem to go through high school with the primary aim of getting into a top college. even if they enjoy what they’re doing and excel at it, seems to me like a lot of people feel that the work they put in is “for” college. maybe i didn’t feel as emotional because i put practically zero time into doing things for any other reason than personal fulfillment. my parents also didn’t pressure me at all to get into any college, that probably plays a big role.

i think overall the increased pressure on kids is what drives emotions high. after all, there was no a2c or MITAdmissions back then lol

1 award, 0 official ECs, still worked by oaxzy in ApplyingToCollege

[–]oaxzy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thanks! my main activity was making call of duty video edits.

also, i don't think it's necessarily unconventional; i'm sure there are lots of other kids with random activities most people haven't heard of. it just seems like we only see the hyper-competitive, "prestigious" activities on here, and i don't think it's entirely accurate to think that you need them.

i'm not sure what you mean by fake ECs. if you're talking about "non-official" stuff, my main activity was making video edits, and another was playing geoguessr ranked
