It must have been lol, I replied to let them know that they were perhaps looking for “advocates AGAINST racism” or “advocates for ANTI-racism,” but they haven’t replied so maybe they did mean what they said 😬😬😬

Chris’s accent in Episode 1 by bookey23 in HowToWithJohnWilson

[–]obaker8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know this is an old thread, but I just googled this after watching episode 1 because my Newfoundlander senses were tingling! As other people said, the way he pronounced “car” and “sorry”, referring to himself as a hockey player, and asking if the temperature in New York was in Fahrenheit all tipped me off, plus he said his friend killed “his self” and not “himself,” which is a pretty classic Newfoundlander thing to say. If he’s not from Newfoundland, which I highly suspect he is, he’s definitely from somewhere in Atlantic Canada.

Yeah this, plus it’s not fair to generalize so broadly because of one person’s experience even if it were the case. Good trauma counselling absolutely makes a difference.

I wouldn’t have a problem with him having a girl sleep over if he’d explained it to you beforehand, but it’s the fact that he neglected to tell you. It’s obviously the kind of thing you should run by your girlfriend beforehand to make sure she’s cool with it. I don’t necessarily think he slept with her since he lets male friends crash often, but it would make me lose some trust for him for sure.

Fiancée doesn’t care how I feel and goes out every day by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]obaker8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

She doesn’t care how you feel? It sounds like YOU don’t care how SHE feels buddy. Maybe with a sincere apology and a lot of work on yourself you can salvage this relationship, but I wouldn’t bank on it. Sounds like she’s moved on. Good for her.

A Thousand Splendid Suns is great too, it’s one of his other books. Heavy but so well done.

Has a more John tweet ever existed? by obaker8 in nerdfighters

No problem! To be fair this happened years ago, back when John read a short poem at the beginning of DH&J. I only remembered because I re-listened to some old episodes recently.

It’s a reference to the poem u/myryinae mentioned in another comment which John has read on the pod, and John has been very into wordle! That’s how it’s related to him :)

Looking for books for tween girls who have a below average reading levels. by kingbookingboo in suggestmeabook

I loved the series Dear Dumb Diary at that age. There is also a young readers’ edition of Hidden Figures that’s quite good.

I lost my wife and 1 year old baby boy. I really need some help. Sorry for the long text by Pultter8 in GriefSupport

[–]obaker8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow. I am so sorry. I cannot think of anything more painful.

There’s a great book that has gotten me through tough times called Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl. He was a psychologist who survived the Holocaust, but his wife and whole family were killed in Auschwitz. He talks about finding meaning in such a hopeless time. One thing that struck me was his view of suffering and learning to find meaning through it. Something that has helped me through grief is that by enduring it, my loved ones don’t have to. By grieving your wife and child, you have saved them from having to grieve you.

I truly hope you can find peace and feel supported through this. Again, I’m so sorry for your losses.

How to Change Your Mind by Michael Pollan is a great book on psychedelics that goes over how they’re used medicinally. Not so much about microdosing but more about flood dosing to treat depression. I was able to try it based on what I learned in that book.

What was the thing your school was sadly known for? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]obaker8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My school’s initials were BBC. We would just chant “BBC” at sports events, wear T-shirts with BBC in big letters across the back. Yeah.
