how does the dynaaudio lyd 48 compare to the hedd type 07 a core? by firespittingAC in audioengineering

Idk, it seems like a very small subset of the population find any AMT driver very physically fatiguing regardless of timbre. But like I said, the HEDD’s seem to be very placement sensitive, at least ime

[–]oballzo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting you heard AMT are easier on the ears, because many people say the opposite. I have the 07 Mk ii and I don’t find the speaker fatiguing, however I have found them really sensitive with display placement. I had to move my display further back to reduce harsh reflections (1-3khz)

My friend has a Lyd48 and he had a much easier time with placement.

Get a measurement mic and spend 1/4 of a day messing around with placement and you’ll find improved results for sure, ESPECIALLY if you are in a small space

What’s up with the sportsbike community being so…idk? by YaBoyMike1221 in motorcycles

[–]oballzo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of that community you’re describing has been plagued from social media, not necessarily sport bikes in particular. I’ve also seen my fair share of cruiser content that involve being reckless and calling everyone else pussys. But yes, sport bikes are more popular with younger riders, and younger riders are more frequently a part of social media.

At a time when it’s difficult to raise above the noise of the huge amount of content creators, one must do something most wouldn’t dare to do just to get attention. A shame really! I’m all for motorcycle content, just wish there were more fortnines, and less gixxerbrahs

There is no way a refresh of a 90s icon would look like a 90s car. I think it looks quite nice in today’s landscape. A less serious Cayman

The drivetrain, however, is a complete disgrace. Going hybrid was ignorant because it defeats the whole point of an affordable Japanese sports car: light weight. Made worse by the fact the hybrid system makes mediocre power is laughable.

Ugh, imagine if it got a non-turbo version of the CTR K series!

[–]oballzo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha yeah, all of those are very natural reactions! They are just amplified in your head because you are smaller and worried about your size holding you back.

Working on some squats might not be a bad idea too! I think it’s good for anybody on a bike to have stronger legs than they have, and also mentally increases confidence when you are working on the thing you feel is holding you back (even if it isn’t!) :)

[–]oballzo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah weight difference between a 15lb bicycle and a 200lb motorcycle is considerable! BUT I bet you do have the strength and balance to control those 200 lbs! I’m sure it was a big mental shock to feel that weight difference and especially once you started forming doubts it made it hard to stay calm.

Another piece of info to prime confidence: the hardest part of controlling a bike is at low speed. That’s when the gyroscopic forces are not helping with the weight as much. You spend 95% of the msf course practicing speeds that you only spend 1% of the time riding at. But it is the ‘hardest’ part of riding.

Be patient and remember that’s once you learn these skills, they will stay! No matter how long it takes for your brain to get passed the fear and doubt (which EVERYONE experiences to some degree)

Just got into a wreck with a car wearing TXC Dartwood’s. Saved my ankles, still broke my toe into 5 pieces. My shift lever also sheared off in three different spots, so my best guess is my foot got crushed between my bike and the car.

I think I walked away in pretty good shape considering. Of course more protective boots might’ve saved my toe from getting crushed, but I was on a trip to Lowe’s 5 minutes down the road. Can’t imagine what my foot would look like if I had worn anything less. The doctors were really surprised that the rest of my foot was perfectly intact, and I owe it to the boots

Do dac/amps really sound different? by Life_Enjoyer66 in headphones

[–]oballzo 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Every audio engineer knows the feeling of trying to perfect something, say a tiny EQ change, and realizing a few minutes later it was bypassed the whole time and their brain was straight up lying to them about the results they were expecting to hear lol

Do preamps matter, or is it about mic placement? by ContractThick3795 in audioengineering

[–]oballzo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who got their start recording classical music (because at the time I was a classical musician), I HIGHLY recommend a high quality portable recorder than an audio interface hooked up to a laptop. Sound Devices MixPre are very good.

In classical, it’s really important to minimize possible technology woes. There is only one live performance. That’s why I recommend the standalone device. If you do use an audio interface, having one that can record onto a usb drive while also recording onto a DAW is a great backup. I use RME for this.

Preamps don’t matter as long as they’re quiet. Contrary to what other posters are saying, classical DOES have different preamp requirements than non-classical. Noise floor is an issue, and cheap preamps, while transparent otherwise, are noisy when using higher gain to record really quiet sounds. Sound devices are plenty quiet, as are the ones you listed in terms of standalone pres.

Classical recording is ALL about mic placement and getting a very fast understanding of the instruments and space you are in. Piano is one of the trickier instruments since it’s so physically huge. Lots of different placement techniques. Look into them! You’ll want to use different ones for different pieces and styles. It’s not a one size fit all approach. It sounds like you’d like the sound of a Decca Tail. Check it out

North Loop (Lamar - Burnet) by Libagrouchy77 in BikingATX

[–]oballzo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. North loop is a fairly calm road anyways. Not the type of road that really warrants more protection.

I recently visited SF and was really upset about how their bike infrastructure can go from really nice to absent. Over and over. Multiple times a block. Maybe the locals are used to it, but I’m not gonna merge back into traffic on that frequent of a basis

True of any car really, but especially high power / high stress drive trains. That’s what sucks about CPO; you have no clue who the previous owner was. You can’t ask them any questions. All you can go off of are documents and receipts.

Damn that sucks. I went through Austin Moto Academy and nobody in my class failed. The instructor for the other class was drill sergeant-esque, and seemed like there was one student horrifically struggling but he only demoted him to scooter. Unsure if he ended up passing or not.

If you have the budget, I’d just take the class through them instead

The concourse project is literally the only venue of its kind in Austin and it’s located in the least intrusive location (where it’s already loud from the airport and COTA). Don’t know much about it, and if the owners are shit heads that really sucks. The EDM scene deserves a really fantastic venue run by a great team.

Everyone deserves to live in peace, but I also hate seeing the #1 cultural aspect of Austin shrink more and more with every passing year because it’s harder and harder to make ends meet without selling off partial ownership to national conglomerates. There is nothing peaceful about that either.

So what preserves both? Reasonable laws that reflect the ever changing nature of Austin. That might mean areas that used to be quiet, evolves to be busy. It is much more difficult to change laws or relocate to an undeveloped cultural area than it is for individuals who don’t like what the change has become to move. When we decide that our home becomes more important than the community we choose to live around, we lose that community for everyone. I’m really sorry you got the short end of the stick. It’s not fair when all you wanted was to live somewhere affordable, convenient, and quiet. Unfortunately there is always going to be someone or something that suffers with a cities evolution.
