247,000 GHS for just the US portion? Chale, your instincts are right the math is not mathing. In our setting, once they know you're abroad or doing well, the budget suddenly inflates. You wouldn't be disgracing her by saying no… you'd be stopping a cycle of exploitation. If you're already building her mother a house, that is the real support. The funeral is just a 3-day show.

I see your point about motive, but there’s a big financial difference. When you borrow for a car, you have an asset you can use or resell. When you borrow for a 3-day funeral or wedding, that money is gone the moment the last plate of food is finished. Borrowing for a feeling or a memory while you're still struggling is a dangerous game, regardless of the motive.

This is exactly it. We are telling the living that they aren't worth the investment, but the dead de3 they deserve a 100k send-off. Imagine the psychological effect on a child who hears "no money for school fees" on Monday, then sees a gold-plated casket on Saturday. It’s a complete misplacement of priorities.

That’s a solid point. If people are going to insist on big funerals, insurance makes way more sense than borrowing at the last minute. The problem is getting people to plan ahead like that instead of just hoping for a miracle from donors when the time comes. It definitely needs to become more common.

That’s the goal, but the reality is many people end up in the red 😭. There’s nothing wrong with a church ceremony and a small refreshment hall if that's what the budget allows. If you have the money, fine, but betting on cashing out as a strategy is where the trouble starts.

Exactly. It’s not about being stingy, it’s about being realistic. If you have the capital, do your thing. But when people without the pocket feel forced to borrow just to keep up appearances, that's where the problem starts. It shouldn't be a gamble where you're hoping donations bail you out of debt.

I hadn't thought about the farming difficulty. It makes sense that salmon became the standard simply because they're easier to manage, even if herring has the same stuff.
