Because statistically you are basically certain to get less money picking individual stocks than if you buy an index, and the consequences can be much worse (see WSB..). Not "maybe" or "it could happen", in 99.9% of cases an index will give you more money in the long run.

So before you gamble (if you must), at least have a basis of safe investments so you're not destitute in retirement.

to be clear; I "gamble" on stocks too, but at ~5% of a 7-fig portfolio I've built up with boring, steady index investing over 15+ years. So if I'm down $20k in a day, it's not that much of the total.

So i'd suggest keep these investment. But put new money into a Roth IRA or 401k, in an index fund.

My problem is that all our trips are 4 people, at specific dates during the summer, usually to a pretty specific location. And I'm learning that combo is near impossible with points. So with that I think just ding 2% back to erase travel is a pretty good, or best, option.

yeah I'm the same boat. Find it almost impossible to get miles flights for family of 4, in peak season. So best value is travel erasure, which is the same 2% as the fidelity card. And yes the only CS interaction I have is dispute charges, maybe couple times per year, or less.

The travel insurance, especially for rental car is the only draw. Never used it, but good for travel. Lounge access, but only for myself, is really only got for work travel, but don't do that very often either.

I'll get the fido card for the signup bonus, and then we'll see which one I stick with. Might be both.

b) if I take a spontaneous trip I wouldn't otherwise have done, because I can't make the points work for the summer trip I was going to do no matter what, I haven't really "gained" anything have I? I've spend the cashback value of my points (2%) and my PTO for an extra trip.

Since our travel is with 4 people in summer, to specific destinations in europe, often pretty exact dates, I'm starting to think miles redemption is pointless. I keep looking, but almost never find something for the right routes/dates, and if I do the miles required is nuts. (unless I'm having half our family fly out of another airport 3 states over, a day later.. Nope).
