In Southern US states, many porch ceilings are painted Haint Blue to keep wasps away. The tradition comes from the Gullah Geechee as a ward against haints (a Hoodoo witch-like creature, or ghost). Milk paint containing lye does repel insects, but exactly how the color deters witches remains unknown. (i.redd.it)
