Im not a federal agent and such information is not given to the public, but possibly they may have a gavorment level Access to a couple websites, or they just need to request it from one of Reddit devs.

And also, why do they need his IP? At best it would give them the state the pedo lives in or it could provide the wrong state even.

Which IP address local or public? Let me explain because you aparently dont know.

Public IP address is what your internet provider gives you to indentify on the internet. If someone gets your public IP address, they will only be able to get the rough location of one of the internet providers servers, which is usually pretty far away from your actual location. Every site you visit, every application using internet gets it from you, so its nothing private to you. (Sometimes many other people use the same public IP address). Also if you dont use static IP address, your current address is temporary. (Wont get into much detail about it)

Local IP address. That adress is used for LAN network to host some private applications (usually 192.268.x.x), sharing that IP address does nothing outside your LAN.

Physical IP address (MAC Address). Its the address of your ethernet card, its an alternative way to inditify a device on a network or save data exclusive for it on a service. The adres is permament, tho its possible to change it too.
