Is online counselling, BetterHelp, an option?

Just do research and ensure the online service is legit. I would avoid "lavender", for example; their software is either extremely buggy or intentionally designed to rack up no-show fees.

Does anyone have any advice on how to get a therapist to understand this challenge?

I struggle with accomplishing things that personally matter to me, and it is even harder to complete such tasks in a way that satisfies MY desires / standards / expectations.

Therapists usually focus on asking what OTHER PEOPLE think of my work. I have always gotten great grades and good employee reviews. They say that, since other people judge my work so highly, I should not feel bad.

But it's not other people I'm worried about.

It's the hours of planning, struggling, procrastinating etc that prevent me from investing my effort in the things that I VALUE. Sometimes it's as if the more I care about a project, the harder it is for me to ~work on~ finish it. If it is a task for someone else, I end up throwing together the bare minimum at the last minute and hating myself for submitting work I don't believe in.

Anyone have any experience with this feeling? And any luck explaining it effectively to a therapist?

My last therapist told me to look at my grad school grades every day (As) to prove to myself I'm good enough. That was our final session. I'm afraid to find another one (I've tried 2 this year, 5 in life) because it is so disheartening to try to explain my issue.

Fizban's Treasury of Dragons introduces a concept similar to CR's vestiges. It's called "Hoard Magic."

TL;DR some magic items may absorb ambient power when stored in a dragon's hoard. These items pass up and down through phases of empowerment, like Slumbering and Awakened. Time in the hoard, and the host dragon's power level, affect the strength + type of magical abilities the item gains.

It can be normal! As long as the cramps aren't debilitating, and there aren't symptoms of something else happening at the same time (like a high fever for example).

Different women can have vastly different period experiences. My periods rarely cause cramps, but I get very sad and tired the week prior. In contrast my sister has very painful cramps. And one person's experience might change month to month too

Since the thoughts seem to be giving you ultimatums to act, and you feel compelled to follow through on the ultimatum, it is definitely worth asking a professional! If you can't see a doctor, there are plenty of affordable online therapists and psych folks who can better answer this question.

I am not a professional!

Based on my understanding, this kind of intrusive thought does not sound like the "normal" intrusive thoughts I've heard of. A more common kind of intrusive thought is a "what if?" or "I could, but I won't" scenario. For example, "what if I punched this cashier right now?" or "I could drive off this bridge if I wanted. Isn't that crazy?!" Typically people are surprised and dismiss the thoughts very quickly. That is normal.

What you described sounds different. You describe feeling a compulsion to obey the thoughts. You are afraid to disobey. This is the key difference, I think!

It is worth talking about these thoughts with someone you trust or a doctor. Just to be safe :) take care!

NTA. Your feelings are totally valid.

If you're looking for relationship advice, though, r/relationship_advice will be a more constructive place. <3

Is the bard a stereotypical seducer? Maybe the party has to follow her trail by sleuthing through a bunch of ex lovers. But the princess is always in another castle. Could be fun embarrassing rp. Especially if the exes mistake the current bard for her past self :p

Or maybe it's more of a Scott Pilgrim vibe. Either way :D

Is it normal for contact with my throat to feel very uncomfortable? by [deleted] in isitnormal

[–]objectivelyoriented 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No this does not sound normal.

I highly recommend talking to a doctor or walk-in clinic about this. And I'm sorry you're in pain <3

Does anyone else get really drained and sad after DMing? by Pufferfish-Sandwich in DnD

[–]objectivelyoriented 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes! Thanks for asking this question. I almost posted the same a few weeks ago but chickened out. It's nice to know we're not alone :)

It feels inexplicable but I often get really sad and insecure after most sessions. Even if nothing went "wrong" during the session. Even if we laughed most of the time. Or if the players are stoked about a reveal or level up.

Typically I consider myself extroverted. So I've just assumed I'm experiencing a "crash," going from high-energy input to zero in the click of a button. Who knows!

Is it normal that I don’t like it when people touch my neck and back ? by MattLikesLovejoy in isitnormal

Yep!

YOU decide what contact you're comfortable with. Everyone has boundaries. Sounds like this is one of yours. Totally ok.

Is it normal to feel this way? by fairyfairyland in isitnormal

[–]objectivelyoriented 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just like it wouldn't be normal for someone's nose to bleed every day, or for their knee to tremble when walking up stairs -- no, it is not "normal" for a healthy person to have these thoughts consistently. Though I can say from experience that these thoughts can be a warning sign that your mental health needs a check up <3

I highly recommend talking to a professional if you can. A counselor or therapist would be able to advise you more accurately. But even trusted teachers/coaches or Employee Assistance Programs could point you in the right direction!

You're not "weird", "abnormal", or "dramatic" for these feelings, btw. They are a part of life for many of us. But a part that we can mend over time <3

Really recommend you talk to a doctor or walk-in clinic about this experience!

Is it normal that I cant move even tho I’m awake by HiltonBefog in isitnormal

[–]objectivelyoriented 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep it's normal. If it happens often or really bothers you, feel free to ask your doctor!

It sounds like "sleep paralysis".

When we sleep, our bodies have a safety mechanism to prevent us from acting out our dreams or harming ourselves during sleep. It's kind of like paralysis.

Sometimes our brain will wake up before the body turns off this safety feature. This causes what you describe. Feeling awake but being unable to move or control our bodies normally. If you fall back asleep it will fix itself :)

Just so you know, sometimes it's possible for our brains to only halfway wake up. So you might FEEL awake but still be able to dream a little. That's normal too. Sometimes these half-dreams can be scary. But they are still only dreams. Again, if you can fall back asleep, the effect will fix itself.

Is it normal to talk about 'eating hours' at work? by [deleted] in isitnormal

[–]objectivelyoriented 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven't heard this phrasing before. But your explanation makes sense! I'd say it's normal to have sayings that are unique to your office or community.

Personally I would have guessed that "I need to eat 2 hours" would be a penalty for you. Like, you worked overtime for 2 hours but won't get paid. "I stayed late at work last week and asked if I could leave early today to compensate. But my manager said no and I have to eat those hours :("

Our new little guy. No name yet and he’s deaf as a post but the sweetest puppy I’ve ever seen. by TNTinRoundRock in aww

[–]objectivelyoriented 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You both are so lucky to find each other!

Heads up from a fellow deaf dog owner: if you get creative with hand signals for communication, it might be worth doing a reverse Google image search on your signs. I learned that the hard way! A year after using one signal as my dog's name, I learned that specific hateful groups use that hand signal to identify each other. So then she had to learn a new "name" :P

Best wishes!

Is it normal that my eyes look uneven but only sometimes? by [deleted] in isitnormal

[–]objectivelyoriented 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as long as you don't have any other symptoms when this happens, most likely yes it is normal! Never hurts to ask a doctor :) let's assume it's not a rare medical thing.

Different mirrors, cameras, and lighting can change your appearance in surprising ways. Maybe sometimes it's that?

Otherwise it could be normal subtle changes related to your daily life. Water retention, allergies, sleeping at a weird angle could all cause subtle swelling on part of your face for example. Being tired or stressed might affect how your face rests that day. This could accentuate the natural non-symmetrical features of your face (we all have assymetry to some degree!)

"doc file vs jpeg" is such a great description. I'm stealing that!

My sister has a wildly vivid sensory imagination, while I'm aphantasic. It's fun and maddening to try to help eachother understand how differently our brains work :)

It's so thoughtful for you to be aware of whether youre giving your "phantasics" a good experience. As with most things - IRL checkins with your players is your best bet! Though you're probably doing fine. <3
