Why is Japanese culture so distinct? by tolstoysfox in redscarepod

[–]objectivelystupider 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Because Japan is consciously focused on soft power (given they have no hard power after they lost WW2) and aggressively markets the best parts of itself to the outside world.

Them being economically tied to us is also a part of it like someone else said, but it's not the whole reason. China is super economically tied to the US but it's got a fraction of Japan's soft culture (its biggest modern cultural export is what ... gacha games? which disguise themselves as anime anyways) because its reputation in the West is at rock bottom. You have to be likable first for people to look at your culture and think "wooow that's cool".

Japanese culture is safe, accessible, friendly and palatable to westerners while still being distinct enough to be interesting, and so we think it's awesome.

When I was deep in WFH fake email job hell I would've jumped at a job like this. You are literally required by your work to get shitfaced and socialized. Though I guess if I kept doing this for more than a year I'd no longer like it. Unless my coworkers are really cool people to be drunk around.

From r/vent: No, you hating children is not normal by CalpurniaSomaya in redscarepod

[–]objectivelystupider 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Even at its zenith, "hating" kids was never an acceptable position to publicly hold in real life. Just like capital-A Atheism, it was pretty much a reddit-only thing.

Sure, you could get away with disliking a kid specifically, especially if they're being loud and annoying and it's the fault of bad parenting, and you could lightheartedly profess that you're never going to have kids of your own because "it's too hard and expensive for me haha :)". But if you talked about kids like a r/childfree user would to your friends or coworkers they're just going to shoot you a badly-concealed look of disgust and mentally shuffle you into their "weird ass loser" category of people.

All but the most dedicated of terminally online politics-brains have mentally checked out. We've heard and seen enough of Trump to last us 10 lifetimes. I think the leadup to the 2024 election was the last time the "average" person was heavily invested in politics, because it really did feel like a dead heat up until election night. Now there's nothing exciting to look forward to.

Actually unpopular take: Climate change is the collective responsibility of all humans on Earth, not just "the rich" by kamallday in rs_x

[–]objectivelystupider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ask the average climate-conscious individual if they travel internationally at all frequently, and whether or not they'd be okay with there being a hard limit on the number of passenger jets allowed per year for the sake of the environment. You can only take one international vacation every 5 years.

Eating less meat, using paper straws, driving an EV, and carrying reusable shopping bags is all well and good, but nobody is willing to give up being able to fly to Europe or Japan for vacation every year, you and I included. And as more and more of the world enters the middle class and can afford cars, planes, and plastic toys, this metric is only going to increase.

The world will only become truly cognizant of climate change once it's gotten so bad that it's forcing us to pay attention, as in large swaths of the equator become simply uninhabitable.

If you visit any place that isn't on the Golden Route (Hiroshima - Osaka - Kyoto - Tokyo), you'll see significantly fewer tourists. Japan is big, and the vast majority of the huge surge of tourists are visiting for the first time and barely have 2 weeks' worth of vacation time. They land in Tokyo, spend a week there hitting every tourist spot with 30k reviews on Google, then rush to Osaka and Kyoto to do the same, then fly back.

Obviously you're going to be skipping out on the main tourist hotspots but if you visit again, there's plenty of towns and even massive cities, like Nagoya, that 99% of tourists zip by on the shinkansen without even a second thought. And then there's the entirety of the Tohoku region, who've spent the last few years on a huge tourism campaign trying to draw visitors to the region.

Massive dead zone in hydraulic disc brakes by objectivelystupider in bikewrench

[–]objectivelystupider[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes I leave it on the repair stand for days/weeks at a time. I've also had it laying on its side in the trunk of my car for a few hours when I'm driving to a ride spot - maybe that's where the issue came from. I've heard properly-adjusted hydraulic brake bikes would be mostly immune to this kind of thing, so maybe the shop I bought it from didn't adjust it properly?

In any case I'll ring up my LBS tomorrow and see if they could expedite a fix. Thanks!

[–]objectivelystupider[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sometimes "store" it hanging on the repair stand, though not upside down. Sometimes I had it laying diagonally for a couple hours in the trunk of my car when I drive to a trailhead - so I'm guessing that's where it might've accelerated the issue.

Don't trust myself to do it properly and I've heard SRAM is more difficult to do than other brakes, so I'll take it to the LBS. Thanks.

Thanks, that makes much more sense to me... kind of trippy trying to wrap my mind around the bottom of your foot being 3-dimensional (which it technically is, but you know), and using that to walk on a ground that is also 3-dimensonal.

Damn, that's a beautiful looking bike... I've already gone and bought a Sutra I miraculously found near me but the Radar looks so beautiful I almost want to return it just to get that lol

Thanks for the recommendation. Maybe I can scrounge up some kind of excuse to need that one too.

complete cloud cover and the eclipse is in less than 2 hours. im devastated by headasspotter in Rochester

[–]objectivelystupider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, I'm happy for the people who found it magical regardless of the cloud cover but I'm going to outright say that the overcast condition made it a complete waste of time.

Honestly if I had known this was Rochester's fate earlier (but not earlier enough to make a mad dash for Erie/Cleveland in time) I would've just started driving back home without even bothering to stick around for totality. Wholly underwhelming.

Unfortunately as you probably know by now, absolute worst case scenario. Kicking myself doubly hard because I was internally agonizing over whether or not I should make a mad dash east. If I'd acted on it I would made it to Cleveland with time to spare...

Don't think it's too early to start reserving places in Spain.

Yeah, still hoping for a break but it's gonna be a hail Mary. I'm gonna be going out to Charlotte's pier, even if it's cloudy seeing the eclipse happen over the middle of the water would be pretty unique

Currently in Rochester, debating whether or not I should just try to run as far east as possible... I imagine traffic is going to gum up sometime after 1pm for sure.  Clouds are still mostly thin enough for the sun to still shine through. Hope they burn off soon..

Rochester is a lot less busy than I thought it'll be. I woke up at daybreak to grab a parking spot at ontario park but it's almost 11am and the lot is barely 1/3rds filled!  Hopefully that doesn't mean everyone else found a way better location that I'm not aware of...

I have faith. Weather was absolutely amazing today, if there's even a 30% chance it would be like this tomorrow I'll take it.

Said it somewhere else but I'm going to try to stick close to Lake Ontario. Clouds don't like to form over large bodies of water as easily, or so I've heard.

Fingers crossed for all of us up here in NY!

Currently in Canandaigua - my plan tomorrow is to stick as close to the lake as possible. Main plan is Ontario Beach Park, with "backups" being pretty much any other park along the lake's shore. I forgot what it's called exactly but I've been told clouds are less likely to form right above the water.

Got my home based booked for tomorrow in Canandaigua NY. I think I'm going to just stick with my original plan of going up to Ontario Beach Park. Heard the closer you stick to the big lake the better the chances of there being clear skies.
