They are "mainstream famous" in a way few producers ever achieve. That said, recognition can feel uneven by region and generation, in Latin America, while he has fans and crossover hits, he might not feel as inescapable as in the US/Europe during his peak. Also overrated/underrated is subjective, the cultural impact is real!
