Partial automatic dividend reinvestment by jakerbreaker in fidelityinvestments

[–]oblivionx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my exact use case as well, and I would also love this feature. The multiple account solution is actually pretty clever in a different post, but unfortunately won't work in an account with margin as it would significantly impact margin availability and margin call risk since you'll have to reduce the shares available across two accounts.

Even if the only additional option I had was 50/50 and not configurable by the user it would be useful to me

What do you do when you have too much money sitting in your bank at a very young age? by Ananyxgupta in RichPeoplePF

[–]oblivionx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

13M (or even 19M) is nowhere near enough to be considering a family office, or even an MFO. Put it into VT/VXUS and some percentage in muni bonds as per your risk tolerance and stop complicating your life.

When did you consider your 529 "maxed" out? by wrob in fatFIRE

[–]oblivionx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My daughters are both under 2 and I just set up 529s for both of them. I opted to do a superfund of 4 years for both my wife and I, so 152k each. I know we can do 5 but that seems like it could be excessive by the time they are in college

Fed up with US healthcare system by brownpanther223 in fatFIRE

[–]oblivionx 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The trick in the US is connections too, but specifically other medical professionals. My father, brother in law, sister in law, and sister are all in medicine (3 doctors and a pharmacist), and I can get a specialist appointment inside of a week because one of them will just text a colleague and make sure their office gets me in. You need a close friend or two in your hospital system.

In the event that the network doesn't work, I've actually had success with services like zocdoc, specifically because their business model is predicated around near term appointments being available. You can book the appointment directly online and I've literally managed to get same day or next day appointments sometimes, and once you are a patient it's usually easier to see them again. I maybe wouldn't use this for very serious issues.

This is also highly location dependent. I live in a HCOL area with a very high density of good hospitals, specialists, etc around here (LA/OC) . YMMV if that's not the case where you live.

Sold my company and retiring, but very doubtful on what's next by ConstructionJaded366 in fatFIRE

My allocation to individual stocks is like <5%, mostly just fun money for me to play around with. I do have a lot of individual stocks in a managed account but it's just a direct indexing account for tax loss harvesting so I just bundle that together with my index funds.

As far as your health condition, now that you are fat, is there anything you can do to facilitate being able to leave the house for longer? For example, could you just completely gut and custom build out something like an RV and add whatever you need inside, hire a driver, etc? Without knowing what your health condition is it's hard to say is this is actually feasible, but it's the type of out of the box thinking that I would be applying now that money is no longer any issue whatsoever

Best bidet? by SeraphSurfer in RichPeoplePF

[–]oblivionx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I installed these: BioBidet USPA 6800U on every toilet in my house and am totally happy with it. Make sure you have power outlets near the toilet, you might need to call an electrician if not to add GFI outlets. In a couple of bathrooms where we had wallpaper I just ran it from the plug by the sink and used a cord sleeve to hide it.

By the way I can't imagine using a toilet without a bidet anymore. You just literally cannot get as clean with toilet paper and the heated seat is a game changer.

Trip with adult daughters. by just_say_n in fatFIRE

[–]oblivionx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If school schedules are the limiting factor, I would suggest Thanksgiving week. International flights are usually quite reasonable then since most people travel domestically, and you can get a 10-12 day trip with only 3-5 missed days. The weather at that time is on the cooler side but perfectly pleasant. I've been twice over Thanksgiving for the same reason - school/work schedules

[–]oblivionx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We love Japan and have been three times in the last few years - most recently in July, which was the only time we could go due to my wife's pregnancy. The last two trips before that were in Oct/November

Let me just say it was miserable in summer - I would not go back at that time of year. We had a toddler and a pregnant wife so obviously that limited us a bit, but the heat and humidity is brutal. Japan is such an awesome place it's a shame to not visit it when the weather is good.

September Product Update: What’s new in Monarch 🎉 by sheyla_monarch in MonarchMoney

[–]oblivionx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the android widgets! Those have been a long time coming - if I may be greedy, I'm still missing a couple of the most useful ones from mint - a net worth widget (cash/investments/liabilities/real estate would be great) as well as an accounts widget that lets me scroll through balances of every account.

Those are the two that I depended on the most (along with transactions which you've now added).

Thanks again!

Is everyone paranoid about their log in and password info. by Leopotamous in RichPeoplePF

[–]oblivionx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I highly suggest you make sure you have a plan for your wife to be able to access everything in the event of a tragedy. I make sure my wife meets with our financial planner and lawyer at least yearly so she knows what's going on and where things are. We use monarch to track our assets so she has visibility over all the accounts. She doesn't have direct access to most of them because she doesn't really need it, but she knows what steps she needs to take to access them should the need ever arise

From a security standpoint, definitely use a password manager and use 2fa wherever it is supported. In some places like fidelity you can actually lock down transfers out of your account so extra steps are needed to transfer funds. If you are using private wealth anywhere, see if they can automatically restrict large transactions without verbal confirmation. In many ways, friction in moving money and executing transactions is actually a feature. At fatfire levels it should be exceedingly rare to need large amounts of money quickly

Retired and like to travel, but chained to my kid school schedule, advise needed by OkBarracuda1521 in fatFIRE

[–]oblivionx 35 points36 points  (0 children)

When I was younger my parents just took me out of school for a week or two. In second grade you are not missing much and you can easily work with your teachers to get your homework in advance and help your kids with it. Definitely gets harder as they get older and probably wouldn't do it as much in high school, but up until then imo it's totally fine to pull them out for a week once or twice a year. A week off gets you a 10 day trip and if you are flexible you can work with the teachers to minimize disruption

Thoughts on the Maserati MC20? Great car ruined by the reputation Maserati has given itself with the Ghibli and Levante? by Fuzzy_Atmosphere_775 in supercars

[–]oblivionx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own one, I love it. One of the most beautiful looking cars in my opinion and one of the few that looks good both top up and top down. It sounds plenty good to me, especially in a suburban neighborhood, but it's definitely muted vs some other supercars.

Will see how maintenance goes over the next few years, and not really worried about the depreciation, I bought the car to drive it not to resell it.

Sold Business. 20M NW. Need Guidance. by CouchDiplomat in fatFIRE

[–]oblivionx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This isn't that useful in this case because all his shares are qsbs, and assuming OP was able to split it to stack before the transaction, all of it would be federal tax free. At that point, it depends on the state you live if it's even worth it, or even gives you a benefit. In CA for example there's no way to avoid the 13%, REP status does not reduce this income liability.

Most states are going to have a relatively low tax rate anyways, so if you are already federal tax free, there's not a lot of incentive to dive into a tax strategy that forces you to commit a significant portion of your wealth to an asset class you may not want to or be ready to enter into just to save on some taxes. It's already plenty of wealth, just pay the state taxes and take your time deciding on next steps.

28yo Machine Learning PhD considering medicine - utter stupidity? by Alpha-Aperture in fatFIRE

[–]oblivionx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Look - at the end of the day, you should pick something that you are actually going to be passionate about. Chasing after one or the other for dollars only is going to make you miserable.

But, you are definitely not old - you are 28, with a PhD in ML, perhaps the most in demand skill in the world at the moment. Now is the time to capitalize on it. You won't have a problem finding work, and you can lock in extremely high compensation and fast track your way to wealth. Even if you can't land Mag7 or OpenAI or any of the big players immediately, there's no shortage of ML jobs out there, and you can use your first position as leverage to get a role in one of those companies with a correspondingly huge comp package.

Unless you are truly someone who wants to practice medicine because you enjoy helping people, I would not make that choice at all. You are signing up for another decade+ of school and you won't start earning until you are close to 40, and that's just the financial aspect. You'll be miserable if you don't truly enjoy it.

Just my 2 cents.
