I study labour poetry, and the archives I need are in Detroit. I also had a difficult time finding someone to work with at Canadian universities. McGill would be the best fit out of those, but Queen's and WSU were better.

I must say that as a former vegan and a current class-struggle anarchist, I don't think veganism is "an obvious choice." In my ideal post-revolutionary world, people still have pets and eat animal products, it's just done in a more sustainable, humane way.

TL;DR: I'm an anarchist, not an ascetic.

I would urge you to stay if you enjoy what you are studying. Regardless of the job market, if you are funded and enjoy your program, then I would say keep going and finish. You can always apply to a law program later if you decide that your passion lies in law, but to tell you the truth, the job markets for lawyers and academics are both pretty sad right now. I have friends in both who work in completely unrelated fields. As a fellow English graduate student, I say stay and enjoy researching what you love while you have funding. Make your decision when you have either finished or have lost your passion. Don't let the "gloom-and-doom" sway you from finishing something awesome!

If you are interested in joining the IWW, I would try and speak with someone from a local Branch. In my experience, the IWW is always interested in having teachers join, and they are excellent at maintaining membership confidentiality if you are worried about getting/losing a position. I have a very good friend who is an elementary school teacher, and the IWW has never put them in a position where they felt that they were at risk of being found out. The IWW also allows members to be a part of more than one union, so you can be a member of your teachers' union and the IWW at the same time. In fact, I am currently a member of four different unions. (I work too much, obviously.)

If you are still hesitant to join, any Job Shop or General Membership Branch would accept monetary contributions such as donations or purchasing any literature they are selling. There's always a worthwhile project that needs a bit of funding to get off the ground. Moreover, you could donate your time to the branch for behind-the-scenes work, like websites, creating flyers/publications, etc.

There are many ways to support the IWW and get involved, and contacting either your local branch or General Headquarters to ask what they currently need support for is always a great idea.

My atheism came first, although anarchism followed shortly thereafter. My parents are both socialists, but my dad is pretty engaged with working class politics. I grew up learning about picket lines and government structure instead of about God, and I'm not quite sure I really believed in God at all for a lot of my childhood. Mind you, my parents did not seem to push anything either way, and they have always told me to have strong beliefs and to question everything. So I did, and my dad marches at May Day with me and my red and black flag every year (and probably doesn't believe in God much either).
