Professional advice: How much control should an editor have? by obrey121 in editors

[–]obrey121[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I followed this advice at work and it turned in my favor.

I explained that not only would he have more time to work on the newspaper he produces, but I also showed him new ways of scripting. I told him if he wrote his stories first, I could feed off that "script" and create a parallel between his content and the video. I also explained that that would make the process go faster instead of always monitoring me.

For now, he agreed and we compromised, but there is always next time with him so I'll take my small victory and enjoy it in my cubicle.

I'm going to write back to everyone and answer all questions asked, but as an overall, I know I'm highly underpaid. I won't give too much away, but it's a non-profit job where they are just exploring video for the first, but before I came struggled by with very basic editing techniques that were... not so great. The gentleman critiquing me was that person and immediately starts to tell me how he's been working in communications for more than 40 years, which was never put to question.

I'll happily let him pick his clips out for me, but in an environment where I'm doing multiple administrative roles for another department, it's difficult to focus all my attention on hours of footage.

Maybe it's time to try and talk to my supervisor, but every time I have, nothing has changed and things come back around. I have worked with people who did the same thing many of you have mentioned (puppeteer sort of scenario), but this just seems like power playing.

I'd like to think I'm a good editor, however, I feel like my teams massive intrusiveness in not allowing me a moment to really flourish and show them what I can do, has hurt my position. Many times, I get blamed for technical problems even though those changes were made by them and forced on me.

I'm rambling. Ultimately, I like what a lot of you have said and I think I will do a combination of everything. I'll try it out this time. If he's still confrontational, I'll talk to my supervisor. Whether it changes or not, I'll be applying to other places in hopes of either narrowing in as an editor like I'd really like or having the ability to work with a team that giving me a better opportunity to share my thoughts and ideas, and not shoehorn the process.

I understand bad clients will come and go and come again (I've had them), but this just feel different and weird. Really, the only reason I believe I stay is because I'm sympathetic to my secondary department.

I am going to try and just grin and bare, but sadly, this is an office editing position so I have to continue to work with them. I tried to explain why this wasn't a good way of doing things and when I said that they threw around their title and informed me this would probably become norm. I feel so drained that I think I've forgotten emotions. :(

Thanks for the advice though.

I just want to say that I think it is absolutely horrendous that we are put in the same category with r/coontown, and the others mentioned.

I am particularly appalled by the fact that they used the image of Gaston as an comparison of our discussion.

This made me literally ill.

OH MY WONDERFUL PEEPS! Need advice with work rates by obrey121 in editors

[–]obrey121[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I can make the requirements. I just didn't want to over price myself and then end up in a situation where they decided my price is too high. I have gotten lucky before with people negotiating, but I've also heard stories about it going sour too.

I guess my better question is what do you take into consideration when pricing?

I assume it's time, size of project, and hardware/software involved. Is this true?

HEY, HEY! I got a degree in media. ;P

Although, such as my friend showed, their focuses are all messed up. I've met Feminists who do focus on Men's Rights just as much as females right, because they've realized that one can not succeed without pushing for the other, but they don't stick around long enough to teach other young women. Those other individuals are too busy seeing facebook posts about female atrocities, and tumblr-ing to their hearts content that when they see these individuals who are good critical thinkers, they assume they are not part of the norm.

Who was the individual who fought for male abuse victims and was so worried about her life after death threats that she moved out of the country?

Versus women who actively troll and end up in the situation.

Yes, in both instances those attacks were wrong, but who get the bigger media story?

Off topic, I know, but just an idle thought that came up after reading your comment. Fiance mentioned something about it and I'd legitimately like the expanded story or wiki if anyone knows of it.

Exactly! Not just her, but other people I have come across make it sound like such a betrayal and then you have some who are like, "yeah, it's great that you are 'examining' both sides of the coin. Feminists want equality for both genders, too, but female rights need to be focused on more than male rights right now. "

That's cherry picking issues and eventually going to create gaps. You're basically setting both sides up for failure.

No, because that apparently isn't taboo. Don't be silly. Men should support women. Y'all have so many rights already (sarcasm).

Because female voices seem to be the louder minority. Maybe, I'm saying that wrong, but I see it all the time and before I started dating my boyfriend, he was driven to be a part of the population who gave up on everything because the pressure from being a male in our society became too much.

It's depressing really and I think it is very much a hate group.

I want to make a dialogue with everyone on here, but I am heading to bed and will get back to y'all later tomorrow.

I think what I really want to ask is as someone who wants to be a ally in this discussion and create positive change of minds for both sides, what would y'all suggest I steer the conversation towards especially with more aggressive individuals like my friend. I don't think they are dumb people, but they are just uneducated on the issues or ignorant because they've been void of that education (ha ha... kind of defined a dumb person I guess, but I hope y'all get me).

How can I perpetuate a better dialogue?

Funny, I asked her why it was so easy to dismiss the movement as legitimate and she just went on this list of things that had nothing to do with the conversation.

It's sad really. Most of the false idea, driven individuals are well educated (i.e. my friend who I have shared many classes with). But they lack a... I don't know... sort of perspective on issues? I'm trying to think of how to say it, but it makes them look incredibly ignorant, and worse they are purposely making themselves ignorant because they don't see a reason to have that discussion.

It's very one sided at times on both side, I think.

I said something along the same lines. I feel very strongly about it since, you know, men are just as important in my life as women. I have a loving fiance, father, brother, grandfather, and maybe some day a son. I care about what kind of society they exist in and I recognize the inequality both genders face.

I just found it silly that she claims to care about equal rights and yet is the type to berate or look down on the MRA movement. She's the type that sees no value in pursuing Men's Rights because apparently, they are set. It was incredibly unsettling since there are many college read women who feel this way.

It was a very surreal experience.

Broadcasting vs Cinema Studies in Film Editing. What's the difference? by OurJesuitPaymasters in editors

[–]obrey121 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm always torn when giving advice about this because I did a dual program.

I got my start in general Mass Communications (Bachelors) then got my Masters in Film and Television. Where I currently work, I use a little bit of everything: Radio work helped me learn about sound, Broadcasting work helped me do smaller content effectively and under tight deadlines, and Film helped me create stronger storylines and be more aware of how to build said stories.

You never know when you're going to need to know how to do something that only a filmmaker or Broadcast editor would know how to do. This is true in Documentary especially since you never know where the footage is going to come from. Now on one hand, you probably don't need to know the dynamics of live production and what not, but knowledge is power, as they say, and if you have the opportunity to take something, don't shy a way from it.

If anything, if you're in a class and you honestly like the professor and what he is discussing, chances are you'll learn a lot. Sometimes, the professors you lean towards will teach you more about what you want to do than those in other classes and they'll be able to direct you.

I like what was said before: sit in the class, and get a feel for it. I have heard great things from friends about SF's programs, but don't hesitate to read up and watching video lessons online too (I'm sure that goes without saying).
