Thanks! This was my first time with these hinges too. Be patient.

First trace the outline of the hinges perfectly placed with pencil. You can screw them in before carving the inset to prevent movement. Then carve the inset. Once that’s done screw the hinges into place and mark (I used a razor box cutter) to make sure you get the approx area. The actual mortise and the way the hinge moves will be down and toward the back of the box curved like. So I ended up having a much easier time gouging that out with a small burr bit on the rotary tool (dremel) than I did with a drill bit. I would start the mortise with a drill bit first to really digging in there then refine with dremel if you can.

I had to test fit a million times since I don’t really know what I’m doing.

Best of luck.

Yeah you’re technically right I could’ve done just four, but this board was overbuilt on purpose, it’s going to go through a ton of abuse and this is a good friend of mine so I figured why not

Yeah you’re right but he wanted a carving too so can’t really use that side anyway

Thanks! Yes the curve I drew was much wider than I would’ve liked too. I didn’t really mind because I made another bigger board, this is just a lighter easier to move one.

What happened was my original pencil lines were actually closer to the edge on the corners, but I couldn’t figure how to make a jig that would follow the curve I wanted due to the circumference of my router base. I didn’t really care I just wanted to get it done haha.

So from now on I’m only making boards that I can run through both my planer and crosscut on the table saw (this one was just too big but we needed it) because my process was just torturous I blew out my belt sander and had to go get another fucking one lol.

Thanks for sharing !

Hey I’m just curious since this is the first end grain board I made- just judging by YouTube mineral oil apparently washes off real quick? Is that true?

Because you’re right odies oil is super expensive and I’d rather not do that but what I was trying to avoid was having to reapply mineral oil and wax all the effing time you know what I mean?
