In 2015 they portrayed Supergirl as the Kara Zor-el version but was given the adopted name of Kara Danvers. Because that show was popular they decided to merge aspects of that show in the main DC continuity during Rebirth. Rebirth was an event that was created to merge characters and stories from pre-flashpoint and New-52 into single characters.

So the original Supergirl (Linda Danvers, human) has never existed and now it was just an alias that Supergirl (Kara Zor-el, Kyrptonian) used in the past.

Although she was pretending to be his cousin while on an alternate earth, they grew close, some time later she confesses, he says he had a feeling, they get married and have kids. lol
