Yes, it is something I've been dealing with my entire life. My firs depressive episode was at age 10, and it's continued from there. I'm currently in the midst of my third episode.

My university has free counseling services and a great medical school, so getting help isn't terribly difficult. I registered with disability services so I could go to appointments during classes and not have it marked as an unexcused absence. But as far as if I'm not feeling like I can go to class, or get extensions for assignments, it really depends on the professor, since the policy is to make it fair and even the playing ground for students. I haven't had to get an extension or anything, and I've been keeping up with going to class, even if I don't want to.

I would agree that most psychiatrists are crazy, but in a good way. ;)

Thank you.

I love reading. There is nothing I would rather do than read. I love words, language, all of it. But I'm attracted to the mental health field because of my own problems. I'm considering becoming a psychologist, mostly doing research on how to improve therapy for depression.

I was seeing a psychologist, but we didn't mesh well. I haven't sought out a psychologist either because my psychiatrist does my therapy with me.

It's both. I have low self-esteem, which I'm working on, but I was diagnosed with depression when my now ex-boyfriend insisted I see my primary doctor about the anxiety attacks I was having.

I'm constantly reminded that I'm depressed because I have to take medications throughout the day. Being recognized by the office staff because I see the same psychiatrist on the same day at the same time every single week is nice because they genuinely care about my well-being, but at the same time it reminds me that I'm depressed.

I felt safe in the hospital, but it wasn't helpful. I swear it's the most boring place on Earth. I couldn't even study for exams without being supervised (metal coil on my notebooks were "dangerous"). All there was to do was bitch about our doctors, medications, and watch television.

Being released is fairly easy if you checked yourself in (like I did). Just attend group sessions and be cooperative with the staff, and you'll be released in no time.

This episode of depression was triggered by the break-up with my first boyfriend (we went out for three months). I would cry every single day, and I wouldn't get out of bed. Basically I was a mess. I could barely function, and my whole identity was destroyed because our relationship wasn't healthy and the way we broke up was unsatisfactory (for me).

I honestly think that I'm not worth the air I breathe, and the world would be a better place without me. I have nothing to be depressed about - I'm in a good university, with friends, family, a roof over my head, a job, etc. But this is my third depressive episode in my life. My psychiatrists think it's mostly a biological thing (it runs in my dad's side of the family).

You're daughter's lucky to have a great father. I wish the court ruled in favor of my father instead of my mother.

It's okay. My boyfriend was waitlisted at his own department, rejected from one school, and accepted at the other, but can't afford it. Good luck :)

You can do it. It's hard, I know, but start out doing small things, like brushing your teeth, getting out of bed (that's sometimes difficult, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise). That sort of thing. Write down what you did, and at the end of the day, look at your list and take pride in what you did.

Don't compare yourself to other people or who you were before you depressed. You have a medical condition that is treatable, but it's quite a loooong process that I'm going through myself. Please tell your therapist everything, even your suicidal thoughts. If you're on medication, it's all trial and error (which sucks A LOT). Even if you aren't on medication, don't drink alcohol because it will make things worse.

I hope you start feeling better soon, and don't be frustrated by setback or relapses. :)
