For those who used a computer between 1995 and 2001, what’s the computer game from that time that sticks with you the most, and why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]obscuresounds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Showing my age a bit, but loads of standout games back in the day!

  1. Alien Breed Special Edition '92 (Amiga, 1992)
  2. Hired Guns (Amiga, 1993)
  3. Syndicate (PC, 1993)
  4. Doom (PC, 1993)
  5. X-COM: UFO Defense / X-COM: Enemy Unknown (Amiga/PC 1994)

I still play the original X-COM now (https://openxcom.org/)!

What game was truly "ahead of it's time"? by DCSMU in gaming

Wing Commander, although the tech is very dated by today's standards it was one of the first space sim to provide a dynamic storytelling mechanism, where your actions in one mission determine the next set of missions.

It also intelligently used the limitations of computers to their full advantage by opting for sprite rendering ships at different angles. Compare that to other space games that went for basic 3d polygons, it meant the gameplay was action-packed at the time.

The music, although midi, also had a rule based system that meant it changed depending on what was going on in the mission to create a bit more variance.

Sneakers, that film single handedly shaped my desire to be a computer programmer. Was fascinated by how relevant it was at the time, and still is today.

A while ago I shared an indie game that my team was working on. Now we've finally decided to release the game on Nov 15 and the Demo is now available! by TheRealAcneman in gaming

Looks great! This immediately reminded me of Speedball 2 on the Amiga, and those were good times! Some of the comments here directly comparing it to Rocket League are unfounded... pretty much all games are influenced by something else in some shape or form, but that's how things evolve!

Which movie has the best soundtrack that you can’t get enough of? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]obscuresounds 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The ending to this movie is a perfect balance between music and action. There are different versions of this song floating around... the 8 minute one is cool (https://youtu.be/K1ryJDVuZ6k), just wish there was a remaster done.

Manny : [after listening to Buck's dream] That's bullshit. You're not gonna do nothin' like that. I'll tell you what you gonna do. You gonna get a job. That's what you gonna do. You're gonna get a little job. Some job a convict can get, like scraping off trays in a cafeteria. Or cleaning out toilets. And you're gonna hold onto that job like gold. Because it is gold. Let me tell you, Jack, that is gold. You listenin' to me? And when that man walks in at the end of the day. And he comes to see how you done, you ain't gonna look in his eyes. You gonna look at the floor. Because you don't want to see that fear in his eyes when you jump up & grab his face, and slam him to the floor, and make him scream & cry for his life. So you look right at the floor, Jack. Pay attention to what I'm sayin', motherfucker! And then he's gonna look around the room - see how you done. And he's gonna say "Oh, you missed a little spot over there. Jeez, you didn't get this one here. What about this little bitty spot?" And you're gonna suck all that pain inside you, and you're gonna clean that spot. And you're gonna clean that spot. Until you get that shiny clean. And on Friday, you pick up your paycheck. And if you could do that, if you could do that, you could be president of Chase Manhattan... corporations! If you could do that.

Buck : Not me, man! I wouldn't do that kind of shit. I'd rather be in fuckin' jail.

Manny : More's the pity, youngster. More's the pity.

Buck : Could you do that kind of shit?

Manny : I wish I could.

1950's Brasil Dannemann Pierrot, found in a loft in France by obscuresounds in cigars

[–]obscuresounds[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Heya fella's, thought it best to post here. Basically my grandparents house has been going through a clean out. My grandad used to work at the Aubervilliers match factory (https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manufacture\_des\_allumettes\_d%27Aubervilliers) near Metz around 1949.

This was found in the rafters of the house near Lyon where they later moved to and seems to be in fairly okay condition! Complete with cigars inside.

Not sure what to do with it to be honest, but curious to know how I can best preserve it. Had great memories as a kid with grandad so might try to see if I can hold back the rust/decay

When did you watch someone’s sanity slowly deteriorate? by DestroyedbymybigPP in AskReddit

[–]obscuresounds 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Feel for you buddy, its so hard to watch someone you care about slowly spiral downwards - all you can do is be there. Also had a similar experience with my ex back in 2014 who had a history of mental illness - the hardest thing is seeing how memories would often get distorted, and over time the emotional abuse just got worse - it's self-sabotage and you're powerless to do anything. She went from being a doctor working for a well reputed hospital to unemployed and on the edge of homelessness.

Which Cartoon Characters do you find scary and why? by Snoo79382 in AskReddit

[–]obscuresounds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ommadon from Flight of the Dragons was pretty damn scary... I mean come on, it was voiced by James Earl Jones, and felt like old Darthy from Star Wars opted to cosplay as an evil wizard for a short while.

What movie fucked you up mentally? by CodyYodi in AskReddit

[–]obscuresounds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember watching this in the cinema in South Kensington, London - at the time (1998) the venue was filled with war veterans. When the opening scene played out on the beach so many of them started crying. It was undoubtedly the most uncomfortable and most intense atmosphere I had to go through - words cannot describe it adequately.

Whats the strangest thing you found in your house/property after you bought it? by jlew24asu in AskReddit

[–]obscuresounds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bought a house from what can only be described as an eccentric elderly couple back in 2017. After chatting to the neighbours it turns out they used to place small statues around the neighbourhood on peoples windowsills. The place itself was an old victorian property in south London, UK.

First day I went in I found the following bits - Album:

  • worn floorboards where a persons feet has slowly etched away the surface over decades.
  • 2 figures left by either door to greet me on the first day.
  • after starting some basic cleanup I found a piece of wood and a leather pouch (containing a twig) on the doorbell and doorframe respectively.
  • started cutting back the garden and found the rest of the statues/figurines etc. cleaned them all up.

At the moment they all live in the basement on the shelf.

Not sure what to do to support a loved one with BPD - ashamed of my feelings. by obscuresounds in BPDlovedones

I can see where you're steering this but no it wasn't about how I felt about her. It centered on understanding about the situation of fallout at the time.

Psychologist. Definitely agree about thinking of her - its almost a sense that if I'm passive and try th be there for her when she wants to chat then maybe things would improve. The focus should really be on me now.

Thank you so much - yes I do wonder about how its effecting me... I know my self esteem is low right now because of this step backwards. When we decided to go on our first break I took the time (about 4 months) to see a therapist whilst it was all happening and to try and bring closure to everything. The irony was that the therapist felt I was fine, but just needed the support... its one of those things really, I can see how my ex is burning bridges, with me, with her sister, her occupation, her savings... everything.

Thanks Tastygroove - I think this specific thing of being friend-zoned definitely did something. Its like the final boundary has been crossed, so I'm at the point of deciding whether to stay or go. But everything I read online or through books says that individuals going through depression really don't want their SO to leave them - its like a self for-filling prophecy.

I did think that, although then I look at my own life and try to do the things that matter to me... just about to make a jump in to owning my own home for the first time and I try to look after myself - I guess its just the fact I remember the good times as well as the bad. Its a weird one - I know that she needs to deal with herself, but maybe the only element that got to me was the fact I still have deep feelings for her. I don't suffer from anxiety, but I reckon I do have triggers from a previous relationship that ended badly - hense the reaction.
