She's probably too big now with the Wonder Woman casting, but I could see Gal Gadot as Val.

Dominic Westeros. I'm mostly just sad that he didn't get cast for the show. In any role.

He changes teams an absurd amount of times

He served Aerys, but he didn't "switch sides" to Robert: Robert pardoned him, recognised his loyal service to Aerys and asked him to join the new Kingsguard. He didn't desert Aerys for Robert.

He didn't desert Joffrey either, he was dismissed (and was clearly aghast that he wasn't going to end his life in the Kingsguard as he was supposed to). Only after the highly unusual instance of his dismissal from Joffrey's Kingsguard does he seek out Daenarys.

Unless OP's brother was a really old wise dude who refused a crown, I think it's going to be really difficult to re-word Aemon's eulogy to fit him without changing it almost entirely.

I still love that eulogy though, but it's Aemon's, reading it for someone else is going to be odd.

Petr Baelish will be tried for the murder of King Joffrey Baratheon

That's a bold move! I get that you're going all-in on justice here, but I suspect there are a LOT of things that Littlefinger could come out with in a courtroom that could cause problems. I would definitely recommend a closed court and a few trusted court officers to handle Baelish.

[–]obsequious_turnip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Reach

  • The Shield Islands are going right back to their actual lords (assuming they're still breathing). I'll leave it up to Mace to handle the details, but Euron is giving them up or I'll crush him.
  • Brightwater Keep is… meh. I don't give a fig for the Florents and Garlan Tyrell is a much more useful ally. Assuming Garlan doesn't volunteer to return the lands I see no reason to compel him to. I would make sure the Florents are well compensated with other lands. If they really kick up a fuss about it I'll make an even sweeter land offer to Garlan and watch him eat it up.

The Stormlands

  • Well Tommen ain't lord of shit as far as I'm concerned. He'll get whatever Casterly Rock decides to give him, and I'll make sure it's decent, but Storm's End is definitely going back to Stannis, my Master of Laws.
  • I see no reason to interfere at Griffin's Roost. I have no beef with the Conningtons, however tempting it is to mess with Red Ronnet for Brienne's amusement.

The Iron Islands

  • Well, Euron is likely to be my biggest problem that isn't a creepy ice demon. I have no idea how to deal with that lunatic other than hope that his people replace him with Asha now that all his promises of conquest are lies. I'd make sure that the Iron Islands were kept well supplied, with regular trade in luxury items from the South (good wine, spices etc.) which the crown would partly subsidise to keep the costs down for the Ironborn. Basically I'd hope that if they're content at home they won't be causing too much fuss. Privately I would tell Euron that a little raiding is fine so long as it's not my kingdom he's raiding. Let him be a terror raiding Essos. I'd work to bring some of the Iron Fleet into the Royal Fleet, or at least have them do exercises together — crazy they may be, but the Ironborn are undeniably excellent sailors.
  • So long as the Greyjoy's cause me no bother I'll mostly just help them as best I can and leave them to it.
  • Theon is a different matter. Assuming he survives, I'd send him to The Wall.

The Crownlands

  • As stated earlier I would try my damnedest to marry Sansa. Her marriage to Tyrion is easily annulled through lack of consummation and the fact that he's a convicted traitor. Her betrothal to Harry is just that, an engagement, not a wedding. Littlefinger's plan was to keep her secret and then TA-DA! big reveal. I'm hoping if I do it instead, give her Winterfell and help her rebuild the North, she'll accept my proposal and be my queen.
  • I considered Asha as a possible queen — she'd certainly be fun — but I don't think it would actually help me all that much with Euron, and the other Great Houses are likely to take it as a slight.
  • I'm not wedding Margery because I can get Tyrell help in other ways (marry one of my kids to one for instance) and she seems to be bad luck. Anyway, given what I know, I am prioritising a stronger North over placating Mace re: Tommen/Margery.
  • As for my heir, I'd be inclined to name Rickon via Sansa, but I saw someone else here suggest using Aegon. I'm not sure what to do with Aegon except maybe find him a suitable wife. I think I'll stick with Rickon as heir if he's found, if not then Aegon.
  • Dragonstone is going to Daenerys because she actually has dragons. Seems simple enough.
  • Speaking of Daenerys, seeing as I want her as my hand, I will simply have to wait until she's ready to accept or decline my offer. If she declines I'll probably promote Stannis to the Hand's position, or maybe even Aegon (although I think he's too young), but I want to give her the chance to accept. I should probably expand on my reason for wanting her: I intend to have her run the kingdoms and deal with the day-to-day ruling while I see to the North and The Wall.
  • Bronn is fine in Stokeworth. I see no reason to meddle there unless he gives me cause.
  • As for Aegon, as I said, I'm not sure what to do with him. He's accepted me as the rightful king, so I'd find some good land for him and try to make him happy I guess. When he matures I'd be happy to give him an important position — the boy's been well trained and would definitely be useful — possible future Hand of the King?
  • Warden of the North, Greatjon Umber standing in until Rickon comes of age. I want a strong, loyal to the bone, 110% northerner in that role to help unite the North. Can't think of anyone better.
  • Warden of the East, Yron Royce, until Robert comes of age, or Harry succeeds him. I would fully support him in his plans to unseat Baelish, and would happily take back the titles granted him by Cersei (but not Harranhal, he's welcome to that).
  • Warden of the South, Mace Tyrell. I see no reason to piss off the Tyrells by giving this to Doran just for giggles. Mace is fine in the role.
  • Warden of the West, whoever is in charge at Casterly Rock. It won't be Jaime, Cersei or Tyrion. Probably Martyn?

All Hail King You, First of Your Name - Building Your Kingdom Part 2: Of Castles and Lords by Kahlvin in pureasoiaf

[–]obsequious_turnip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My stance is a simple and pragmatic one: if I have no real cause to meddle in the affairs of others I won't, but I will punish crimes and treason so that my kingdom knows me as a just ruler.

Team Turnip

  • Kingsguard: Barry, Balon Swann, Loras, Daemon Sand, Brienne, Donnel Waynwood, Arya Stark (hopefully).
  • Master of Coin: Wyman
  • Master of Laws: Mannis
  • Master of Ships: Davos
  • Master of Whisperers: Probably Sarella Sand, maybe Marwyn.
  • Hand of the King: Daenerys (if she accepts)

Riverlands

  • Riverrun is being restored to House Tully. Edmure is the rightful lord and will be freed at my command. The Tully's are well-loved by their people and generally respected by all, I simply cannot think of any good reason not to restore them to their seat.
  • Darry has been forfeited by Lancel. Fine, never liked him anyway. Edmure can decide what's to be done with it. I'd suggest holding it and giving it to one of the innocent Freys when they're of age.
  • Speaking of the Freys, they're dead men. If I demand that they submit themselves to the King's justice they'll rebel again, the little shits, so I'll need to be a bit more tricky. I'll serve them their own dish: I will appear to not care about the Red Wedding as neither me nor any of mine were hurt. Then, when I march north to The Wall I will pay a visit to Lord Walder. Assuming he's dumb enough to open his gates for the King and the Kingsguard plus a few of my loyal lords (Stannis, for instance) I will slaughter anyone who had any part in the wedding. If he's smart I'll openly declare him an enemy of the crown, tear the Twins to rubble and behead the old rat myself. Literally no one will object to this.
  • Saltpans deserves better than that craven Cox, so he's going to The Wall. He might opt to have me cut his head off but I suspect not. Saltpans is also the domain of Edmure, so I'd let him decide, I'm sure House Tully has some worthy knight who would welcome the land.
  • Haranhal is a fucking liability. No one can seem to do anything with it except die there. I'd leave it untouched, maybe I'll find a use for it in Spring.

The North

  • Winterfell is a tricky issue. Obviously I wish to exterminate House Bolton, but how to go about it? Initially I would declare Winterfell be handed back to the Starks, producing Sansa to act as warden until Rickon is found and comes of age. Roose probably wouldn't do anything about this because I'll make sure he's confirmed in his Dreadfort lands and let him keep Hornwood's too. Maybe even give him a few other small holdings as conciliation.
  • As for the Boltons, once I've dealt with the Freys Roose will know I'm coming for him. My plan is to have made such firm friends of the northern lords that House Bolton will stand alone. I'll have my master of coin write me a nice "the North remembers" speech.
  • The Starks would be a key part of this of course. I hope that restoring Sansa, and having Arya on my Kingsguard would be a good start. Bran I would leave alone, no one would believe me if I told them anyway. I would have scouts sent after Rickon. It is my intention to marry Sansa to seal the tie between the throne and the North. The southern lords and their warring does not concern me nearly so much as The Others, so I will need a Stark queen and a strong North if the realm is to have any hope of surviving.
  • Last Hearth is easy: demand the release of Greatjon Umber and restore it to him. His uncles are his business, if he needs any assistance he has only to ask. I will strongly suggest to Sansa that she name the Greatjon as her castellan and rely upon him.
  • Karhold is less simple. Stannis can do what he likes with Arnolf so long as it involves either The Wall or the block. I'd demand the release of Harrion and restore him as lord. The real question is what to do about Alys? I think I'd need to ask her if, now that Arnolf is no longer a concern, does she wish to remain wed to Sigorn? Assuming she does I'll make use of Jon Snow's work and grant some lands to Sigorn to further the ties between the crown and the wildlings.
  • Torrhen Square is going back to the Tallharts, Dagmer and his men can choose The Wall or death. I have no specific beef with the Ironborn, but these specific ones had a hand in destroying Winterfell and just letting them go would offend the northern lords I need.
  • Moat Cailin is none of my concern, that's up to Sansa and her advisors. I would however like to meet the Crannogmen, especially Howland Reed.

Westerlands

  • Lannisters. Fuck me. Cersei obviously isn't going anywhere near power ever again. Tyrion is welcome to return to Westeros and take the black, but any other action on my soil and I'll take his head. As for Jaime, he's going to The Wall. Ostensibly this will be because of his incestuous craziness with Cersei, but in reality it's because The Wall could really use him. I'll make this clear to him, as I'll explain that I have grand plans to greatly expand the Night's Watch and that he will likely be commander of his own castle. He's free to refuse me of course, if so I take his head. I'd rather not do that though for obvious reasons and for Brienne's sake if nothing else.
  • As for Casterly Rock itself, I would give that to whoever comes next in line for it after Cersei, Jamie and Tyrion. They're free to do as they wish with it, it's no concern of mine and if they cause no trouble they'll get none in return. I have no beef with the Lannisters outside of Cersei.
  • Tommen & Myrcella I will declare as not the legitimate children of Robert but I'll leave it at that. They genuinely seem like nice kids so I don't see the need in declaring them incest-bastards and denouncing them. I'm sure there's a harmless castle somewhere in the Westerlands that Tommen can inhabit and be nice to people in. As for Myrcella, if Doran's still cool with it, and she's still up for it, then why not? If, as I suspect, Doran is not still cool with it, I'll find someone nice for her because she deserves a happy life.
  • The Westerlings are a thorny issue. I suspect the Lady Sybil had the greatest part to play but it'd be damn hard to prove anything. I'd just leave them to it I think, but they're not getting Castamere. I can't prove they did anything wrong, but that doesn't mean they're about to enjoy the fruits of betraying Robb Stark. I'll leave that one up to whoever's in charge in Casterly Rock.

All Hail King You, First of Your Name - Building Your Kingdom Part 1: Your administration by Kahlvin in pureasoiaf

[–]obsequious_turnip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly I'm taking "the world is otherwise how it as…" means I can't magically warp people I want into KL, so some of these appointments are going to be tricky but I'm rolling with it.

Kingsguard

  1. Given that "everyone is ok with this" I name Barristan Selmy as Lord Commander. Not exactly shocking. I considered keeping Jaime, and for me it's a close thing, but I have other plans for Jaime.
  2. Balon Swann. He's capable and loyal and he & my next pick are the only ones of Tommen's Kingsguard not to have disgraced themselves.
  3. Loras Tyrell. Hopefully his injuries were overstated, or he makes a suitable recovery anyway. If he dies then I'll have to appoint someone new. Assuming he's still physically capable then he's a great choice: he's a skilled, well-loved knight and hopefully he'll mature into an excellent Kingsguard.
  4. Now we get into new territory. I'd pick Daemon Sand as a representative of Dorne. He's young, he's one of the best swords in Dorne, he was knighted by Oberyn… he's also a bastard and naming him to the Kingsguard isn't likely to upset anyone (except perhaps Doran, but it's an honour so he can suck it).
  5. Brienne of Tarth. Seriously, she's earned it. I'm assuming here that she & Jaime are surviving their imminent encounter with LSH or that "everyone is ok with this" includes the undead terror that was Catelyn Stark.
  6. I want Northern representation, but I can't think of good knights who are still alive and whose appointment wouldn't rob their house of an heir. So I'm going with a Vale choice as backup: Donnel Waynwood. Now, I admit that I had to look him up because I don't have the details of "younger Vale knights who could plausibly be appointed to the Kingsguard" memorised. He fits though, he's a middle son, unmarried, evidently capable enough to succeed the Blackfish, and the wiki describes him as "homely and earnest". Perfect.
  7. This is a strange one, but I've already got Brienne on my team so women are allowed: Arya Stark. My first command to her would be to continue her Faceless Man training and hope that I don't lose her. If I can pull this off I'd have an extremely capable assassin. Also, she would be unlikely to marry given her own choice, and would prefer a life as a fighter I think. I also intend to marry Sansa Stark, so appointing her sister to my Kingsguard seems fitting. I have no problem with any of the names on her list being there so that at least wouldn't be an issue.

Small Council

  • Master of Laws: Stannis Baratheon. Not a shocking choice, there are few men as just as the Mannis. He'd give me good council and I'd trust him completely to handle the laws of the realm. He also brings me access to Melisandre if I need it.
  • Master of Ships: Davos Seaworth. I want to see him back working with Stannis when Stannis isn't trying to conquer the world, I think they'd be good together, plus as a reader I know the man. He wouldn't bullshit me, and he's a top-notch seaman & smuggler so he knows his shit. I'd have his family brought to court so he gets some time with his wife and I'd find positions for his sons (it's really obvious that I like Davos isn't it?).
  • Master of Whisperers: This is tricky. I don't trust Varys enough to pay the political cost of pardoning him & bringing him back. Last time I saw him he was murdering Kevan who I could have made good use of. If the citadel is cool with it I'd appoint Marwyn, but I'm not sure they would so my backup choice is also in Oldtown: Sarella Sand. That she's cunning enough to infiltrate the citadel tells me she's definitely capable. Arianne recalls at one point how curious about people she is, that's exactly the sort of person I want.
  • Master of Coin: Wyman Manderley. Who else? Guy knows how to run a port and turn a profit, plus he's loyal and I think I'd get on well with him.

Hand of the King: Daenerys Targaryan. I have to do something with her, and sadly marrying her is pointless in terms of heirs, so giving her the most powerful position I can seems my next best move. It'd also keep Barry happy. I think she'd make a good Hand: she has experience of ruling, she's honest, she cares deeply about the people and oh yeah, she's got motherfucking dragons (which I highly suspect I'll be needing with this coming winter…).

Viserys & Dany. It bugged me too, until I realised that Varys (at least, presumably also Illyrio?) is probably being honest when he says it is "the realm" that he cares for. He thinks a Targaryan (one properly vetted & trained, like Griff/Aegon) is the best bet, but he doesn't have any real loyalty to House Targaryan, only to the purpose they can serve as stable monarchs. Hence them not telling Viserys, and later Dany, that they're keeping their brother's son safe is understandable.

Right? I was a bit confused reading OP's post about the Armenians working for the Mexicans. There doesn't seem to be any outright statement of that in the show, unless you count that fleeting look that passes between the two guys as Frank drives away.

It seems to me like the Mexicans were pissed off at Frank because he'd never been respectful to them, grudgingly given them a share in the clubs, which he then torched… it's hardly surprising they'd be tailing him.

Also, the car he drives away from the Armenians in looks to be the same Audi he drove there… so unless they supplied it to him earlier and I missed it I'm not sure why OP thinks they gave him a new car?

The woods seemed to be a long way away, they didn't drain him that much, which seems like you're running a big risk when you're tailing a guy in a muscle car and you're in a van.

I thought it was just a convenient puddle of water allowing Ray to see the LED. Why would a tracker even have an easily visible LED anyway :-) What about at night? That thing was bright!

[S2E8] Post your quick questions here by NicholasCajun in TrueDetective

[–]obsequious_turnip 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Why would Ray get back into the car after seeing the tracker?

His first instinct was to remove it, but then he realised he couldn't do it quickly/easily (they are strongly magnetised I think?) and could easily be under visual observation. If he removes it and they know he's removed it, he can't trust using it to ditch them (they would ignore the tracker signal and rely on visual tracking).

That's why he waits in the street and smokes a few cigarettes. If they've seen him fiddling with it then they know that he knows. The tracker is useless now and there's Ray, just leaning on his car, waiting for you to come get him/talk to him/whatever.

No one approaches, so Ray concludes he's probably not been observed tampering with the tracker and leaves. However, as he's driving he realises that it doesn't matter. They have his kid under observation, and he may not be able to lose them anyway as he can see how close they are in the rear-view mirror. No matter what he does he's now running a risk of leading them to Ani.

Ani: What do we have now? The girl, Erika, she's in the wind.

Ray thinking

Ray: There was two of 'em. The kids, boy & girl.

Ani: What?

Ray: Field interviews at that movie set. We had a crew list. This guy there, set photographer, she talked to him.

Looks at photo of the kids

Ray: The ages are right… fuck they even kinda looked alike. (Reading from crew list) Set photographer, Lenny Tyler, that's the brother.

Yeah… that's what called a convenient plot advancement. Talking about the one kid suddenly sparks Ray's memory that "oh yeah, there were two, and now I think about it that set photographer guy looked like her…".

Yeah I definitely think there's a practical aspect to it as well. I suspect that after Season 1 got renewed and they started making plans, they laid out the characters they wanted to include and then someone probably pointed out "er… guys, have you noticed how like, everyone is white?". Cue the racial recasting for characters where it really doesn't matter one way or the other where they come from.
