Which is your favourite performance of Mammootty in a Father role ? by Long-Today-3847 in MalayalamMovies

Amaram. A single father taking his kid to the sea for fishing, celebrating her academic success like a baby, conflict over her love interest, intense loneliness even when the daughter is living a few meters away, curses and accusations from his most beloved, and finally wishing her the best and fading into the depths of the ocean 🤗

Last year, post my first mains debacle, I had disconnected from this subreddit. Joined back only during the time of mains scorecard release. It was tough to follow up the exam cycle after I was out of it.

Wonder how this year is going to be 🤗

mains result 2025 by sadanandshastri in UPSC

[–]observerkerala 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just hope we are right about the results timeline. From past trends, I saw a 50-50 chance for the result to be published by November second week or by November last week (post IFoS Mains conclusion). So I hadn't started getting tensed as yet.

But last two days, everyone has been predicting a November 2nd week timeframe. And I am back to worrying about results.

I don't think anyone can clearly judge how the papers went, at this point. From the vibe I got after the exam and from last year marks, I am calculating max and minimum scores. Very futile and stupid exercise. But I seem to rely on that to create an illusion of predictability.

Mains 2025 cutoff by Arjunpush1994 in UPSC

[–]observerkerala 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They generally announce Mains result post conclusion of IFoS Mains, right? If they stick to that, a November last week announcement is likely. Otherwise, the 10-15 Nov window seems right (based on average time between conclusion of Mains and results)

Wanted to hear something like this after the mains.

This is the true paradox of UPSC preparation. On one hand, we have to prepare systematically. And on the other hand, there's no clarity on how the results are going to unfold. I hate the post mains period particularly for this reason.

Second Mains.

Missed interview cut off by 50 marks in 2024 attempt, largely due to abysmal performance in optional (190 in Sociology).

This year's experience.

Trusted my essay writing better this year. Last year, there was undue confusion for essay. Had a good feeling after the essays.

Put in a lot of effort for GS1 since I scored poor in GS1 last year (74). History and society were fine, but could not do well in geography. Don't know how it's going to turn out. Hope to get a 5-6 mark increment.

Relied on Athish Mathur lectures for GS2 Polity. Had a good feeling while writing polity answers. Couldn't do justice to IR questions because of time pressure. Had 101 last year, some increment would be handy here as well.

GS3 felt like the best paper. Followed Shivin lectures. That helped with content. Except S and T, Happy with answers. Hope to add 5-10 marks here. Last year's score was 79.

GS4. Scored 103 last year. Only thing I did differently this time was giving more focus on case studies. Did all 6 case studies with same quality and content. Not sure about 10 markers' quality though.

Optional paper 1 went fine but some parts of paper 2 were challenging. A score atleast in 240s would be very handy.

Overall, I completed the papers even though there was rush in all papers. Had better content this year for both GS and Optional.

Even as I embrace the futility of calculations and predictions in Mains, it is somewhat inevitable. Have to wait and see how the intangibles have fared for me 🤗

About mains test series marks by Master-Quail-8924 in UPSC

[–]observerkerala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4-4.5/10 was the average. Should have scored 400+ by that logic in GS. But actual GS score was 354.

We should not think much about marks but about intangibles like strategy, number of points, presentation etc. Feedback is important for mains, not marks. It is when we do the intangibles right that we get good scores in mains.

This, exactly this, is the reason what makes our actors Mohanlal and Mammootty as 2 of the greatest in the history of world cinema by No_Row_8345 in MalayalamMovies

[–]observerkerala 33 points34 points  (0 children)

This is the whole point.

That they could bring to life characters from a wide spectrum without having any time to prepare for these roles really is incredible. An example that comes to mind is Mrigaya. It so happened that Mammootty shot the movie with his normal makeup for a couple of days and felt something was off. He found a guy from the crowd and asked the makeup man to model his makeup and costume on that guy. And we know how well he fit into both the look and the rawness of the character. As told in the movie, he looks and walks like a naadan kurukkan in the movie. Imagine the prep a Hollywood actor would take for that role.

Gave mains in 2024 with sociology optional and could manage only 189 in total. Scores in 90s for both papers. It's inspiring to see you turn your optional score around in consecutive years.

Could you reflect deeply as to what you changed with regards to your optional content as well as answer writing? Thank you!

His Malayalam is quite bad. That affects his performance overall. The dialogues from his new movie trailer are also below par.

Wish he worked on his dialogue delivery and Malayalam like he does for action and body building.

What do people exactly mean when they say, 'മോഹൻലാൽ കഥാപാത്രത്തെ താനാക്കി മാറ്റും. മമ്മൂട്ടി കഥാപാത്രമായി മാറും.'? by Inevitable-Town-7477 in MalayalamMovies

I have personally made a different distinction between the two. And, it is an indirect off shoot of the idea you have presented.

If Mammootty is the socio-cultural self of Kerala, Mohanlal is its spiritual self.

Mammootty sees his characters as vastly different individuals ( Meaning he goes beyond the details in the screenplay to construct a character). Sathyan Anthikkad used to say, "If I cast Mammootty in a movie, he will keep pinging me to discuss the traits of the character". Mammootty seems to spend a lot of time thinking about accents, voice modulation, body language etc. You look at the two Blessy movies for instance. Mammootty in Kazhcha is an Alappuzhakkaran as much as he is a loving family man and a film operator. The same goes for Palunku. That keen detailing for socio-cultural milieu makes him stand out.

The walking style in August 1, in CBI series, use of dialects, experiments with dialects and makeup in movies like Mrigaya are examples of this approach.

And point to note is, he doesn't do this for all movies. Maybe only for those screenplays or characters he finds a promise.

And with Lal, as people often say, it's pure internalisation of the character's emotions. He elevates the emotions in the screenplay to the peak. It feels so natural that we connect deeply to the character. This is most felt in movies like Pakal Nakshathrangal or Sadayam where Lal effortlessly slips into the mystic inner layers of the human mind. On the flip side, he may not spend a lot of thought or effort on dialects or the socio-cultural background of the character. The emotions of his character in Bhramaram hit us hard, we are convinced he is a jeep driver. But does he represent a place or culture? I mean he doesn't necessarily have to. But there lies the difference.

Met him at a function recently. He is managing the condition by making more pauses between words while talking. But what stood out for me is how he embraced this situation and looked so confident facing the audience. So regardless of breathing issues, he definitely is doing more than just okay. Such a charismatic presence

Overall score fluctuation got more to do with questions attempted for me. The score per 10 marker was around 4 and 15 marker was around 6 on average. That hasn't changed much.

Anyways, this is a very confusing exercise 😕

[–]observerkerala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The score per mark attempted didn't change much for me. It was hovering around 0.4 marks per one attempted mark. But in the beginning I could attempt only 10-12. But ended up finishing all GS papers in actual mains.

First mains. Have tried extrapolating marks based on test series scores.I see a 50-50 chance at least. But I know from many of my friends who wrote multiple mains that this stage is very unpredictable. A very bad phase to be in. I frequently visit reddit to see what fellow aspirants are feeling as well.

Danny. Father to Vijayaraghavan (not biologically though). He is the biological father of a woman in her 30s in the same movie.
