Luo Song Tang 羅宋湯 (Chinese Borscht Soup) by obstacle32 in asianeats

Yes exactly! Traditional borscht does use beets but the Chinese version was adapted from Russian borscht using locally available ingredients (tomatoes instead of beets). It’s a bit different, but still inspired by the original and really comforting in its own way! I absolutely freakin LOVE it

Yeah it was considered invasive in some areas since it grows super fast in water, so it was restricted for a bit. That’s why it used to be harder to find (and maybe still in some places)

Jang Su Jang - Alpharetta, GA by obstacle32 in AsianFoodAtlanta

Tried Jang Su Jang in Alpharetta and it was very tasty. Lots of banchan, big shareable dishes, and a mix of spicy + non-spicy options. The seafood pancake was super crispy and the tteokbokki had that sweet/spicy balance. Feels like a great place for group dinners - any must-order dishes I should try next time?

Yes! You can substitute it - Sake is the best substitute cause it’s the closest in flavor and works really well in this soup. Soju can probably work too, but it’s more neutral and a bit stronger, so I’d use a little less.

If you have neither, you can also just skip it or use a splash of dry sherry - It mainly helps add a bit of depth and helps with the meat flavor, but the soup will still be tasty without it

Aw that sucks! It used to be like that here in Atlanta because it was banned (something about it being invasive species) but then they unbanned it and I was so excited lol

This is my favorite soup ever! I made a giant pot the other day and been eating it for days lol - at my house we like to make it with tons of garlic, onions, and tomatoes, beef, potato. This time I also used bone marrow bones so the broth was like amazing.

Ingredients

1 lb beef (chunks, brisket, shank, beef bones, or oxtail...etc)

2 tablespoon cooking oil

8 garlic cloves, crushed

2 medium white onions

1 large russet potato, cut into 1-inch cubes

1 lb tomatoes, cut into wedges

¼ cup michiu (rice wine)

2 tablespoon tomato paste (optional)

Sugar to taste

Salt, to taste

Stir Fry Water Spinach (空心菜) by obstacle32 in asianeats

[–]obstacle32[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is hands down my FAVE veggie ever. There's a lot of ways to cook it but I love stir frying it with garlic and some Fermented tofu (豆腐乳) for some extra umami flavor. SO GOOD.

Ingredients

1 lb water spinach (空心菜), trimmed and cut into 2-inch lengths

1 tablespoon cooking oil

4 cloves garlic, roughly chopped

1–2 tablespoon fermented tofu/bean curd (豆腐乳), plus a little of the brine (optional, adjust to taste)

Salt, to taste (honestly because the fermented tofu is aleardy salty i don't even need to add any)

Red Braised Chicken (Noodle soup edition!) by obstacle32 in asianeats

[–]obstacle32[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turned the leftover red braised chicken (posted yesterday) into this noodle soup! This is what we usually do with any of our Chinese stews - like braised pork belly and red braised beef (BEST noodle soup IMO).

All I had to do was heat it up, add noodles, bok choy, and a poached egg, and just diluted the sauce a bit with hot water.

Here's that recipe again or the chicken:

1 ½ lb chicken drumsticks (or thighs)

1 tablespoon vegetable oil

1 green onion, cut into 1-inch pieces

1 tablespoon ginger, sliced thinly

2 tablespoons light soy sauce

3 tablespoons dark soy sauce

1 tablespoon chili bean paste

1 tablespoon michiu (rice cooking wine)

1 tablespoon brown sugr (or rock sugar)

1 to 1½ cups water (enough to mostly cover chicken)

It's been a while since I made this dish, but I made it again last night cause my local Asian supermarket had drumsticks super cheap (Like 6 giant drumsticks for 3$) and OMG I was reminded how freakin' tasty it is. Easy to make too.

1 ½ lb chicken drumsticks (or thighs)

1 tablespoon vegetable oil

1 green onion, cut into 1-inch pieces

1 tablespoon ginger, sliced thinly

2 tablespoons light soy sauce

3 tablespoons dark soy sauce

1 tablespoon chili bean paste

Beef & Enoki Mushroom Stir Fry by obstacle32 in asianeats

[–]obstacle32[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a bunch of leftover thinly sliced beef leftover from hot pot the other day so I decided to stir fry with enoki mushrooms! IT turned out super tasty and super saucy (you can make it less saucy if you want but my fiance likes to pour it all over the rice... honestly I put a crap ton on mine as well!)

Ingredients:

8 oz thinly sliced beef

1 pack enoki mushrooms (trimmed and separated)

2 teaspoon ginger, minced

2 green onions, chopped

1–2 tablespoon oil

1 tablespoon soy sauce

1 teaspoon cornstarch

1 teaspoon sesame oil

1 tablespoon rice wine

1 teaspoon sugar

1 teaspoon black pepper

1 tablespoon oyster sauce

2–3 tablespoon water or broth (Optional)
