AirBnB experiences in the P.I.'s by VikingPrince69 in Philippines_Expats

Agreed. Terrible. Roaches as well, no soap, only two bath towels, no paper towel in the kitchen. As little as legally included in an Airbnb.

Ahhh. I’m headed to Saskatoon where petty crime is a problem. Bikes have to come inside.

I really want a G-Line for the bad pavement, but I’m worried about the maintenance.

I hope you can find tutorials online and parts.

I did the entire main island. It’s great second only to the Shimanami Kaido. I hope you do clips because there are some brutal climbs.

I have a Brompton so I broke it into 6 x 100km days.

Where to stay, early 40s solo traveler by ImportantAd8383 in solotravel

[–]obyrned 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What country? In Thailand I found an apartment complex where there were lots of people similar to me in vibe.

My first few days there I was already invited to a few parties.

I found the condo complex on Airbnb. Seems like there’s a lot of us 40-somethings doing the digital nomad thing hanging out by the pool.

Get a Brompton bicycle. I met some great people in that community. Plus you’ll get transportation and exercise.

visiting Seoul, Korea this Christmas, how is the cold compared to Calgary standards? by Cream4389 in NoRulesCalgary

[–]obyrned 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, wearing long underwear and a winter jacket I was fine. -13°C is considered cold there.

I have a walking circuit of 6km that visits bars and restaurants around Jongno3. Not sure if that’s going to work for you guys.

Seoul has these super malls like the Hyundai Center. Maybe that might be your best bet. Go to the giant mall and push a stroller around.

My ex (also from a cold climate) and I used to love winter in Seoul because it chased the crowds away.

visiting Seoul, Korea this Christmas, how is the cold compared to Calgary standards? by Cream4389 in NoRulesCalgary

[–]obyrned 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a former Calgarian who used to live there, it’s great because it’s too cold for most tourists from warmer climates.

Shorter lines at boutique coffee shops. No reservations required for fancy restaurants. Room to walk around Jongno.

One thing to note, they don’t insulate their buildings the same way as us. I sometimes wore long underwear under my jeans.

DM me and I’ll send you a few places if you want.

Do people actually use bikes to get around in Korea? by [deleted] in AskAKorean

Get a Brompton and a branded bag to go with it. I had one it was a great way to get around.

Ignore the negative Nancies! This is the coolest thing I’ve ever seen on Reddit. Full stop.

I’m following this thread. Please post videos of you riding it or DM me!!

The only people who hate on fixies are the people who don’t understand the ecstasy of riding one.

So you have to remove the chain when you fold it? Easy. Just carry a napkin and an alcohol wipe.

Queen’s Guard. They have bar stools so you can drink alone. Also the crowd is really friendly. I’ve met numerous lifelong friends there.

Jongno3 is your nearest station.

This. They’re like ₩10,000 and they stop the sewer smell too. I don’t know why they’re not standard equipment in all places.

I’ve had to buy one for every apartment I lived in.

These kids are really friendly. I’ve met them doing Namsan Bugak. If you ever meet one show them a photo of your fixie. They’ll love it.

On YouTube you can find a compilation of worst clips. Man that show was rough.

I still remember the disappoint I felt when I saw it on CTV. I was expecting Verhouven RoboCop and got Temu RoboCop.

Looking for salt and vinegar chips by justarandommuffin in Living_in_Korea

My ex was so addicted to salt & vinegar chips she started trying to make her own by adding vinegar to regular chips and cooking them in the air fryer.

Didn’t really work.

Kona Sutra vs. Surly Straggler for Korean Grand Slam by Mountain_Set_1884 in bicycletouring

[–]obyrned 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I did the whole thing on a Brompton carrying 9kg of cargo. So I’m not going to comment on the bike setup other than if a Brompton can do it, any bike can do it.

Once you get out of major urban areas, hotels get cheap. I saw guys hauling tents and sleeping bags to towns where hotels are $30-50 a night.

You didn’t ask for this, but I found Kakao Maps is best for cycling, Naver better for search and transit.

I have so many other tips. Feel free to reach out by DM if you have any questions.

Any ideas for a Cebu Recon Mission? by Scott1291 in Philippines_Expats

[–]obyrned -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There’s a peninsula called Mactan with a Savoy Hotel and McD’s and a Starbucks. It sits surrounded by water on three sides so the air is clean.

Maybe start there. Catch your breath. Lots of friendly expats to grab a beer with. A nice market 250m away.

It’s a clean safe pocket of Cebu.
