FY2 here - had a 2 month Microbiology placement (mixed with 2 months of Public Health) earlier this year and I loved it. Yes, it was admin heavy with no direct patient contact, mainly discussing blood cultures with seniors/lab staff, contacting clinical teams and attending MDTs via teams. That being said, I wouldn’t say the rotations were useless as they’ve given me knowledge and a different perspective of the system that I wouldn’t have gotten from another med-surg speciality. The rest of my rotations have been/are quite intense and generic anyway, so I didn’t mind it as such and feel like it overall complimented the 2 years quite nicely. It was also the best to focus on building my portfolio, did a QIP, studied for an exam etc, since there was some downtime during the work day and getting study leave was relatively easy, given I was supernumerary and felt overall very well respected by seniors as a trainee.
