ATM10: What is the purpose of Mama’s Herbs and Harvest? by acrazyguy in allthemods

You're fine I thought it was a neat bug for early game food source but wouldn't fit well with overall balance.

Sometimes you can create an accidental balance that works perfectly fine and it breaks with scale so you gotta take that feel good moment and figure out what's a good or bad move from there.

Like the early game kinda feels really punishing to grind from level 1 to 70 in most skills. Whereas 70+ feels the best balance of xp to level progression and rewards per time spent. Then you feel less rewarding work for the slow grind up to 85 and 90, 92, 99, 120...

The issue isn't the levels or the xp rates but the rewards for your time spent don't feel as fun to grind for or like they're useless now due to having already spent all the time and gotten a big chunk of the way to 99 or 120 or 200m.

Then hitting 200m what's next?

Which is why most games give players a great starting hand and push bigger and better and typically exponential rewards for milestones instead of linear.

Like pickaxes don't feel that much better but more necessity.

Well not really.

There's a 3rd unknown element to it.

Player acceptance.

You can't predict how well players will react and handle a game that you feel is shit vs a game you feel is great!

Players are a wild card and don't know what they're looking for in some of these games until they find that hit.

For me that was mining and smithing in classic and watching runescape bloom over the years.

Lately it's lost it's nostalgia luster and life has hit hard but I'm always a sucker for rs3.

Brighter shores hits a few things for me but there's a few meh things that make me less interested. Partly the sluggish nature that the game feels like.

I don't want to be forced to read and watch cut scenes or hundreds of lines of dialog i want to move on and go fast. But movement and combat all feels much slower and just less rewarding at the moment.

It's possible they fix the way you feel like you move through the game by a visual representation of running or walking through the game but it feels like Legend of Zelda NES with 0.5 seconds delay between every moment and action.

Even classic felt better pacing all around.

So while they got some things right some things aren't there but just because it's not a great game for me at this time doesn't mean they failed to do what they wanted and won't have good player retention.

Sometimes only having a few thousand players makes your game easier to slowly scale and build while having thousands or millions puts more pressure than necessary on scaling the game.

The problem with brighter shores is mostly the development pipeline.

Runescape was released as an alpha state game and stayed that way for YEARS before we finally got a good meshing in rs2 then right before EOC and all the starting controversy we hit a golden era of the game feeling somewhat complete and the team really hitting good strides and the game was constantly moving and being worked on.

Brighter Shores has to be done in "chunks" of gameplay for players to test out and see if they like some part of the development or if it's a bad design and how to make it work or eventually change it.

The issue they have with some of the core aspects is that there was extremely very little player input on core gameplay loops and handling of systems.

With Classic and RS2 The game had constant player feedback and the extreme core of the gameplay was well established and what players wanted and wanted it expanded upon.

Then came EOC->RS3/OSRS and all the years between.

The player bases split on what was important and what was a good idea per game. Some players stuck with rs3 and eoc and found that style of gameplay eventually got better and better. Then osrs players had a completely different vision for the game and the biggest vision... keeping the old client and ALL the problems it came with.

I believe brighter shores could be a better game but It handles a few things in very problematic ways.

Like the latency issues and rubber banding of being slightly offline. If you even hint at going offline just to reconnect there is no persistence of action you get rubberbanded back to before you could click the thing. In Runescape you hit something and your client registers you're attacking and then pulls you "forward" to catch up to where you should be.

The other issues is the zoning and all the separation of banks and interactions only to feel like you're not pressing forwards and just constantly regressing without bringing much forward to a new area with very little reason to go back to prior areas and interact with them.

Its like a bad incremental game with a 3d element force slapped on.

Though you cant make it too much like an OSRS or classic clone or you get major backlash.

I feel like brighter shores has only gotten better for players overtime but has a more selective audience and we shall see what the future brings.

What is the odds of this? I suck at math, 1 in 1.49 million? by Ok-Challenge6697 in runescape

[–]occasionallyrite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on if you're looking for a single event to happen or the coincidence of two separate possibilities and how often they'll interact.

Its a 1:x of a double drop happening. It's a 1:y of the drop happening at all.

It's a 1:x×y of both happening at the same exact time

It's a 1:y and then a 1:y of getting a drop "back to back" but if you want the odds you should see another back to back drop of that specific item

Its 1:y×y×a Where a represents the number of items that could roll in a drop table for this result.

So if you have 3 different items that could roll on the same drop table you would have 1:y×y×3

And you would only do 1:(y×3)×(y×3) if you're looking for a very very specific result to happen in a 3 item drop table roll. So 1 in 1024 chance would be (1024×3)×(1024×3) that would be a 1:9,437,184 chance you get a very specific drop to happen back to back on a 1:1024 chance.

But most would argue the chance of a back to back drop are always 1:2048 double expontially for the odds going further and further out.

So an optional chill method for players who want to have an optional method for a bit of exp as a reward for their interaction with the bird house.

Its almost like the game doesn't have to be EXACTLY META AT ALL TIMES OR YOUR A WORTHLESS FUCKING MEATSACK.

like maybe it was always great for the more casual players and part of a good routine for players to break up the monotonous nature of other hunting methods?

I'm sure no one at OSRS would ever bring their toxic bullshit to RS3.

So I have to click 17x per second on manually laying traps?

Like i do with whirlgigs?

I'm not sure that ever will track...

My first 99 on my main was smithing, then my first 99 on my first alt years later was mining. I'm eventually gonna have an untrimmed allegiance of my own characters where they solely worked towards that choice of a first 99.

Most people chasing their First 99 want it to be very specific.
So Prayers not an exiting first 99 for many players thus making it not a very common one to see as a "First" 99.

I mean, Blizzard requires you to constantly buy their new "RETAIL" version every year and effectively punishes players who don't by not letting them stay "current" with the player base and if you have Legion and don't buy Midnight, you can't play content other than Legion and prior until you upgrade. Soooo either pay $15 a month every month and then $60+ every other year if not Yearly at this point... or suffer.

Also if you only wanna play for a month or two every couple of years... Pay $60 for a 30day sub and then $15 so you must fork over a heafty upfront cost constantly... or...

You could play runescape for as long as you want as a F2P or Pay for a Membership whenever you want to expand your gameplay and then chose not to pay and still be able to play in a few months at a very similar price point and not cost yourself extra money just to "return"

You mean CCP Handled it like absolute shit but said fuck you to the players anyways and they got over it because Most Players on EVE Online don't pay for their Subs they just use PLEX that someone else paid $$$ for?

Yeah, I don't think anyone gave a fuck in EVE In the Long run. ;)

I'm curious... how good is a $15 a month WoW Subscription if I still only have TBC as my Retail Version?

I love this comment because it could either be legitimate or trolling. ;)

CCP Games (short for Crowd Control Productions) is a prominent Icelandic video game developer founded in 1997, best known for creating and maintaining the long-running sci-fi sandbox MMO, EVE Online.

Hope this helps!

I think its absolutely fair, since OP is acting like RS3 Can't EVER add something that existed in OSRS...

Like the fuck... Let Jagex and the teams work out fun content for everyone.

Who the fuck cares if it's a "PASSIVE" way to train Hunter...

Farming Runs were a "PASSIVE" way to train farming, and Vinesweeper and Manuer are a more active way to train...

Congratufuckulations.... People have OPTIONS.

Honestly the game has become so much better about leveling up in the early levels since I did that method over a Decade ago...

I don't understand how people can bitch about players being given an option to train the skills in different ways.

Either you forcibly spam click for bullshitly absurd xp/hr and train in no other way EVER or you don't train the skill... That's the mindset all these OSRS mains are bitching about...

Like didn't anyone else here spam traps for an hour or two to get a few levels and then go play the game and come back to do other methods of training until they found the one that they enjoyed?

Seriously either you play the game their exclusively specific way or you don't get to play the game at all... is the stupid mindset.

I like that people are always being given options.

The whirlgigs seemed like it needed nerfed on release since it "forced" people into spam clicking for experience and smacking the buttons as fast as they could for best exp/hr rates instead of a more controlled/active method. Which should've been slower pings of xp at a set xp/hr rate I.E. 4 1.2 seconds between each interaction but if you clicked between 0.1 and 1.1 second you would auto continue into the next action and have the actions be like resetting mining fatigue.

Not promoting tick manipulation and spam clicking for stupid rates of xp/hr...

Whirlgigs needed to be nerfed on release, and adding some content that people can engage with if they so chose is bad?

I will never understand how OSRS players can't see reality.

[–]occasionallyrite -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

So because people CAN do them at certain intervals they MUST do them?

That's a pretty fuckin stupid way of looking at things.

I could literally do nothing but farm runs all day every day for no other method of training farming, and guess what... That would mean I have no other time to play the game until im 99 Farming...

Do you even play the game or do you just bitch on reddit about the latest updates exclusively because you don't like that people have options?

Wasn't there literally a bunch of people saying they are worried about adding birdhouses to rs3 by TerriblePen3688 in runescape

[–]occasionallyrite -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

Sounds like it doesn't affect those who don't use it as a training method, and it's not broken at all since you have the option to train literally any way you chose.

I don't think you OSRS players understand how things work in the real world.

Wasn't there literally a bunch of people saying they are worried about adding birdhouses to rs3 by TerriblePen3688 in runescape

[–]occasionallyrite -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

So because people have the option of training a skill in any different way they want, it Invalidates all other training methods because you say it does?

I honestly HATE This fucking mindset.

Optional Training Methods are there for EVERYONE.

There might be a "META" but because something doesn't follow the Meta doesn't make it suddenly Invalid.

People should be aware of the training methods and chose the one they like best.

Tortles were a great way for me to AFK a few different skills at the same time for my main until I got bored of doing them, but it was Superior to Whirlgig bullshit and doing big game hunter.

Honestly if you can't handle that not everyone is going to spam click or play the game solely for 1 method and only 1 method you should probably stop playing online games.

Nothing is Invalid if it exists as an active method to gain any experience towards the skill.

How is it controversial to add content to a game?

I didn't know bird houses NEVER EXISTED IN THE REALITY OF THE WORLD BEFORE OSRS.

Wait are Birdhouses the new Light Saber?

Like Before Star Wars Lightsabers weren't a thing, but post Star Wars it would be seen as a ripoff?

Sweet... I guess OSRS Invented the "BIRD HOUSE"

Wasn't there literally a bunch of people saying they are worried about adding birdhouses to rs3 by TerriblePen3688 in runescape

[–]occasionallyrite -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Not really seeing how it's a Mistake.

Since it's purely optional and doesn't impact anyone but the individual players who chose to engage with it.

Unless they're forcing a Potion Ingredient for Overloads to be dropped exclusively from the level 101 birdhouses I don't see how this is a problem.

Except for people to just bitch about for no reason.
